Do you like the female backing voices???

Just a thought, as these backup voices always ruin the song for me, would love versions with them cut out personally.

i think they seem so out of place with New order, awkward, and used very poorly many times. plus sound very dated on recent recordings

i always thought Sub-culture remix was funny thou, i must be the only one. but State of the Nation, that joke wasn't funny anymore...

I think the lack of votes is because this is in the side project forum. Then again, this subject was talked about when WFTSC came out (re Jetstream, Guilt etc)

I go with what people have been saying. I like it on some tracks like Crystal but others liek Guilt is sounds too corny for New Order. Choose the moments carefully.

Reason I put this here is because it also had to do with the Raise the Pressure album. . .which it seems is where the corny female backing voices started??? Amazed to see a 50/50 tiebreak at the moment.

I don't have the Raise the Pressure Album. However, female backing voices ruin the songs most of the time, including bands like NO. The only exceptions where I can see the vocals helping NO are in Sub-Culture and Jetstream (I know this is an unusual thing to say).

generally, yes. like on someone like you and disappointed (or is that just neil tennant's falsetto? ) they add much needed substance.

I like 'some' of the backing vocals. Mostly, I like hearing "them" i.e. the band, not the voices trying to filler the background.

I have to wonder what Getting Away With It would sound like without Neil, though. I almost think it would be better.

But on songs like Until the End of Time, it's practically necessary, because of the style of song. On Monaco's "Tender", it adds a sense of gentleness to the lyrics. On "It's a Boy", I wish it wasn't there. Even if it does make it more of an 'anthem' because of the backing vocals. Kind of like a choir.

It depends on the song. I think Crystal is great with female backing, but when playing live i don't think they should garnish songs that have never had backing before.

That's a good question that I've thought about too, JHC. Initially I didn't like them. But upon repeated listenings you don't even notice them anymore. At the very least they are all gone in good taste.

I really like the backing vox on Second Nature. The song is so colorful and funky.

I like the female backing vocals very much. I wouldn't want them on every song, but I do find that it adds an additional touch of soul sophistication the songs.

I'd like them to use more backing vocals versus addition guest vocals on their songs.

female backing vocals are sometimes great and sometimes they are an absolute nonsense. we've got two examples in NO material .Two opposite ways, actualy. DEH and Crystal. If i can clearly understand the sense of Gillian Vocals on Doubt even here, it's harder to find one with the crystal intro... Really. With Crystal, i'd say that they are just a "collage" with no musical interest at all. It doesn't bring anything more to the song and it just makes the intro sound dull" quelconque"... On the other ha,d, Gillian backing vocals give the song something deeper. They are a quality add .And, i 'd better say, they are really a significant part of the song.

I don't mind these backing vocals as long as it blends well with the song, and the woman has great range (i.e. dawn zee, who whoever was in the perfecto mix)

On the whole, my least favourite NO songs are the ones with backing vocals on. There are exceptions such as Crystal but that's a cracking song regardless.

I tend to like them. Denise Johnson is fantastic on the Electronic tracks, eg, Get the Message and Dark Angel.

My whole beef, which I didn't get into in the past is not backing vocals, like Gillian's in Movement, rather the cheezy vocals on Raise the Pressure and WFTSC. There is a way to use backing vocals to excentuate music and another to repeat or emphasize lyrics... since we can almost all agree that Barney's lyrics are crap (aside from good one liners), they don't and shouldn't need emphasizing... they only point out the weaknesses of the song. Plus there are good backing vocals, and backing vocals you'd expect from a wedding singer's entourage trying to copy Aretha Franklin in rave music, which I think these backing vocals border on.

either way, the choice in vocalist really screwed up songs like Guilt Is a Useless Emotion, jizzstream, If You've Got Love, Until the End of Time, etc. Plus what is with the crappy, cheezy use of "Baby"....

Yes

the NO songs with backing vox are not the greatest NO songs anyway regardless of the backing vocals- but the vocals add something, like those diva voices you get in some acid house and techno records. btw, is there a transcription anywhere of what gillian is saying towards the end of Doubts even Here?
