From this week's free London newspaper "One Week To Live":

"ASHCROFT RUMOURED TO WORK WITH FREEBASS At least one track from Freebass, the project being put together by Peter Hook also featuring fellow bassists Mani and Andy Rourke, has been finished and will be available for download via iTunes very soon. Speculation is also rife that the album will feature a number of high profile vocalists including Richard Ashcroft.

The album's producer and programmer Roger Lyons, formerly of Mancunian band Lionrock, posted a recent message on official New Order website www.neworderonline.com saying: "I can exclusively reveal that a version of one of the Freebass tracks IS finished featuring guest vocalist Allan Owens, who is the vocalist in critically ignored Manchester band, CircusGirls (ex-vocalist in another great band called Geek).

"He is not 'the vocalist' on the entire project, just this one track at the moment. We DO have other guest vocalists lined up too but none have been committed to tape/hard disk yet and no I am not telling who they are, YET "

In Peter Hook's interview with One Week To Live this week (see page 14), he also lets slip that the band had now found "a nice young man from Wigan called Richard" to sing on the LP, possibly a reference to the former singer with Wigan band The Verve, Richard Ashcroft.

Meanwhile, New Order are to headline a gig at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on 12th October, just one of hundreds of events taking place to commemorate the anniversary of John Peel's last radio show."

An excerpt from the interview (which I've posted in full on Digital Republic):

"How's your new project Freebass going?

It's coming along. All three of us are so bloody busy DJing that we can never get it together to get back to it! But we've finally got a singer who we like — a nice young kid from Wigan called Richard — he's kicked a few of the tracks around and they sound really good. And if I say so myself, considering it started up one p*ssed up night in London, talking about three bass players doing a CD...everybody laughed at us so much; Bernard, Bobby Gillespie, Alan McGee — they p*ssed themselves at [the idea of] three bass players making an LP. And blow me down, it's actually worked and it sounds good! I'm really pleased with it. It requires a little bit of care in how we do it; we don't want to do it slapdash or make a balls up of it because people, rightly, are expecting something very interesting. I'm very confident, I think it will deliver."

Of course, all this depends on whether the magazine has correctly identified "a nice young kid from Wigan called Richard" as Richard Ashcroft! :p

Thanks for the info Nick. You've hit the nail on the head as usual :) from the scan of the article you sent me there is no mention of "Ashcroft" in any of Hooky's quotes, just "a nice young kid from Wigan called Richard"! They have a pic of him and that's about it.

Interesting choice for vocalist. I'm personally not such a huge fan of Ashcroft, he sings with far too much of an American drawl considering he's from the North! Too many Bob Dylan records on his stereo methinks! Having said that, his "Lonely Soul" collaboration with UNKLE was ace :thumb:

Let's hope they manage a proper CD release and not just a crappy iTunes file :uhoh:

Great choice! He's coming out with his best material since Urban Hymns lately. And considering the Freebass sound will encompass a bit of Northern soul...and a bit o' Richard:thumb:

That's bittersweet!

Yup, I somehow doubted that a "young lad" from Wigan would be Mr Ashcroft - he's hardly young, is he?

I'm afraid it is definitely not going to be Ashcroft, he's hardly 22!

Andy Rourke in MEN on the 21/04/06: 'We wanted some fresh talent from the area to front the band and though it took us a while to find the right person we have now confirmed Rich as our singer. I can't really tell you anything else about him at this stage, other than he is 22 and from Wigan'

There you go folks!:deal:
