Your own Best Of Electronic?

My golly, I was gonna do this thread when i saw this any way

3. Patients of a saint (since I am a hard core pet shop boys fan)

Typically, this is actually faultless - chronological, singles, rare edits, one even rarer mix and a set of samples that will never see the light of day - and it should be the disc to go with the DVD come September. BUT, since there is that DVD instead of a 2nd B-sides/mixes disc, it would maybe be a shame to overlook these other tracks. Especially given that the singles tended to be more guitar-driven, presumably to garner more radio play; and wasn't the initial inspiration for Electronic to be more dance/groove/beats - based to begin with? And to collaborate with other musicians in the process. With this in mind, the chronology has been waived and then reversed in favour of a mix where the guitars start the proceedings and the synths end them. So, for what it is worth ie. not alot...

It tries to bear in mind that some album tracks should probably remain album tracks no matter how great they are (IDIOT COUNTRY, FLICKER, PRODIGAL SON, OUT OF MY LEAGUE, all IMHO) while also keeping songs from the same album away from each other. I've not timed this up properly but obviously would just play around with (radio) edits to get it as close to the 80 minute mark as possible. And if something had to go it would be SECOND NATURE and/or UNTIL THE END OF TIME, with the RTP tracks rather fittingly being under pressure here. HAZE could/should have been the 1st comeback single off the third album; I FEEL ALRIGHT is classic Barney - less-than-great lyrics but that was probably down to him being more interested in the gorgeous synth lines he was putting down for this one and that is why it is here. FREE WILL encapsulates white -label- wannabe Electronic prefectly and while I've yet to play this mix through, I don't think anything could finish things off with more a elegant yet sombre sense of finality than SOVIET. With regards to the proposed September release; hopefully the mastering and sleeve will be decent, and that IMITATION OF LIFE is edited for the best as that workman clang outro, which was never a good idea in the first place, is definitely a waste of time on a compilation. Obviously a shame that this track, as well as ALL THAT I NEED and two single mixes represents their best efforts at making it interesting but that's just the way it goes. And if we all post our wishful Best Of's we can at least get 'closure' on this wasted opportunity...?

I've been playing this compilation in my car for a few weeks now and good god what a fookin great band they were! I had completely forgotten how Electronic got me thru the 90s when NO were dormant.

I will buy the Best of... but doubt I'll play it much as I'm very happy with my own Best of... thank you very much.

My ultimate Best Of Electronic will be a 2x dual cd/dvd set: disc 1 cd-side: Get The Message - The Best Of [there's enough space for more album tracks] disc 1 dvd-side: Videos disc 2 cd-side: Turning Point - Collected B-sides disc 2 dvd-side: Feel Every Beat - The Remixes

Don't believe it ever got finished - it was a cover version of a Donovan song (with Shaun Ryder) - mentioned a lot in the time in interviews in the late '80's/early '90's, especially when Shuan was married (?) to Donovan's daughter...

Certainly, nothing's ever been released...

...yet. From what I remember it seems they've recorded the song, but didn't want to use it anymore as Shaun Ryder was doing a lot of drugs and alcohol at that time... (bad publicity); the Disappointed release was probably the alternative...

If this song really isn't 'available' I would replace it by Imitation Of Life (New (single) edit)... and probably add an edit of Get The Message (DNA mix) as well... as hidden bonus track!

'Colours' was never finished - just the backing tracks...

Also, I don't believe that Imitation Of Life has a 'New Single Edit', despite what the NME reported (at least not on the promo, it might be on the final release out tomorrow)?

I'm one of the few that is probably excited about this official release. I never bothered to pick up the cd for the glorious debut and to say that my cassette is completely worn out and hanging together by some thread is being kind... Hopefully Rhino will remaster/release a deluxe double version of this fantastic album with a complete set of b-sides, some live versions from Dodger Stadium gig, and some of the better remixes on the bonus disc.

For the best of, I too was initially disappointed at the first track listing posted, but with the addition of Second Nature and Twisted Tenderness this is a much better collection. I personally would have started the whole thing off with Soviet as an intro, and closed the set with Flicker. I would have substituted "Until the End of Time" for "Out of My League" and "Patience of a Saint" for "Disappointed". Otherwise, I think it is a pretty good representation of the different sides of the band.

Like someone else said above, thank goodness for Electronic helping fill the void during the 90s hiatus. I always liked New Order but didn't get into them heavily until 1993, which was the wrong time to do that!!!

Could be... (well, you can't know anything... I'm a fan too, but discover new edits/versions every now and then as well!) Anyway I like them... so might you promo edits?

Everybody must know that musicoloog is one of the best (music)editors I've ever have heard about (his creations). So it's an honour to me that he has taken one of MY (music)edits for a video he made. Finally it's worth it to listen to the edits of him 'cause they're made without destroying the original structure of the tune. End of monologue.
