I guess we got the same Facd287. By the way the neworderonline discography has a lot of incorrect details, such as timecredits. Especially the European releases (i.e. German) need some updates... So far the German (Virgin) releases of Get The Message are exactly the same as the UK pressings, both 7" as cd-maxi... Just check the matrix numbers... the numbers 2 at the end of it tells me these are the second, approved, versions...

Okay, it seems as though on both the UK and German CD singles, that there are 2 different pressings for each.

For the German CD single (663 849-211) -

4:07/4:08 mix: on the rear of the CD (in the inner ring), it says "SONOPRESS 663849 A1" 3:55 mix: on the rear of the CD (in the inner ring), it says "SONOPRESS 663849-1 A"

I haven't compared two different UK CD singles yet, although mine is the 4:07/4:08 version, which has:

"Mastered by NIMBUS" and "FACD 487" on the inner sleeve.

And the barcode is "5016839702874"

Damn, another couple of Cd singles to track down!

You're sure? You also got the red sleeve with yellow "2", black & white innersleeve. My cd has the matrix SONOPRESS 663 849-1 A

Yes, I compared my Geramn CD single which has 4:08 on it, and SONOPRESS 663 849 A1, and this was different to his 3:55 one which was SONOPRESS 663 849-1 A.

So, there you go - now you know!

I would say: riddle solved!!! Well, almost... still wondering why they put the 'right' labels on the 'wrong' vinyl on the German 7" or they put the 'wrong' labels on the 'right' vinyl

It seems the German "3:53" cd/7" have been sold only over here. I've asked some friends this morning and they all have only this version...

I did buy this CD single a few months after it had been released as a single, and have read about the "disapproved of" seven inch mix - which is why I made the assumption that I must have the "approved of" version (especially if it's the version in the video - and greatest hits compilation).

Incidentally, I'm trying to track down the other version of the edit (i.e. not the edited album version I'm linking to above. I've found "Get the Message (USA Warner Bros 21832-2 digipack 5trk)" online... Can someone confirm which seven inch version this US CD single actually features??!

I've yet to hear or read anyone make the connection between the low, single-note string melody that underpins the chorus of 'Get The Message' and the piano notes behind the chorus vocals to Sister Sledge's 'We Are Family'...

I've always thought it was a deliberate "nod" towards that disco classic.... Surely the notes are too similar to be coincidence..?

Definitely different to my FACD287 (bought it at the time of release), and no external differences on the barcode/markings on the CD... Wonder if I buy 5 CD singles, what are the chances of finding one with the other mix on it? :)

I wouldn't worry... Sounds like it will be on the new compilation anyway!

I'm not entirely sure which seven inch version is the "approved" and which is the "disapproved" one now..? I always assumed the version that wasn't the edited album mix was "disapproved" - which is why I have the version I do on the UK CD single. But it seems the US at least, got the "remixed" seven inch version... Wonder if that was a mastering error (ie.e someone picked the wrong seven inch mix to go on it)!

It would appear there are definitely two different pressings of the UK Factory CD single and the German Virgin CD doing the rounds. My German CDS definitely has the 4:07 version but tonight I just ordered and confirmed another version of the Virgin CDS with the 3:53 version so I've just got the "alternate" Factory pressing to get now.

Right, I ordered that US edition of 'Get The Message' from a UK online record store, and it arrived this morning. My thoughts:

I strongly believe that this 4:05 'single version' is the disapproved mix, for a couple of reasons.

I bought the UK Factory CD single a couple of months after it's release, and it featured the 3:53 '7"' mix - i.e. the edited album version. This single mix is far more representative of the album version, which is sought to promote.

Those that have said their Factory CD single include the 4:05 single version comment that they bought it very soon after release - backing up my suspicions, that this longer edit is the "withdrawn" version. It appears some German and the US editions feature this (what I think is the 'disapproved' version). Well, it wouldn't be the first time a wrong version of a track has gotten released in error (hello 'Temptation (Original Version) on the 'touched CDS!).

More to the point, while I quite enjoy the 4:05 edit as an alternative single mix (and quite like it's intro), it's differences when compared to the album version make it - I would have though - more likely to get "disapproved" by the band. It they didn't like the edited album version, for example, why did they not also not like the longer album version proper??

Also, the structural changes in the 4:05 edit give the song a more cut-up feel (again, making it more likely to be disapproved of). Add to that the fact that Denise Johnson's backing vocals in the final chorus do not appear at all, and the fact that it's the 3:53 edit apparently going on 'the best of', then surely, the 4:05 mix is the one that Bernard and Johnny didn't want released?

I rest my case, m'lud.

from what i see here it looks like there is

3:47 Get the message (7" Mix) Disapproved 3:55 Get the message (7" Mix) Apporved 4:05 Get the message (Single Mix)

most people have the 4:05-4:08

The version on best of is the 3:55 version

and the 3:47 is still "out there"

I only have the 4:05-4:08 version and it is looking like i will buy this more and more. The real reason I was going to get this was just for the videos.

Oh BTW what versions of the videos are these??

Isn't the radio edit not only on the promo cd? And the "single version" is more or less the same as the album version, except that this one has the full length outro... I haven't checked, but I think the album version has crossfades... (I really should listen to this album again)

Well, I carried out my idea of buying 5 random second-hand UK CD singles, and 5 random second-hand German CD singles...

So far, I've got 4 x UK CD singles and 1 x German CD single back...

All 4 of the UK CD singles have the "3:55" mix on them, and the 1 German CD single has the "4:08" mix on it...

Oh yeah, and there's absolutely *NO* difference between the UK sleeves/CD's as to which version is on the CD... The only way of telling which one you own is to play it!

What this proves yet, I don't know, but it may be interesting to find out from everyone that owns either a UK or German CD single, which mix they have?
