There is a few enhancements I've seen on several forum system that I would like to add to our forums, plus some cosmetic changes, but I'm always listening to what our users would like to see...
Most bulletin board system (bbs) like UBB and vBulletin (which my system is inspired on, even if it's a totally different thing) have new features that enhance the use of the forums.
For years now I've been asked for a search engine, do not despair, it will come someday.
Those are features I'm considering, you can comment or tell us about something you'd like to see.
Ignore List - Allow you to avoid seeing posts from a specific user.
Adding the owner of the last post in a topic (cosmetic)
Ability to see who's currently connected in the forums (maybe on the site) with option to be "invisible" if you don't want people to know you're here at 5 AM. Might be in a concept of "buddy list" instead of seeing everyone. (like vBulletin)
Private messages, send a message to another user with our internal system. This usually allows you to avoid giving your personal email address. Can send a copy in email also.
Ability to attach a FILE to a message.
Topic rating (I don't think this is very useful)
User Avatar! Have a cool small picture under your name, totaly useless, but cool might be your fanclub picture's thumbnail. (cosmetic)
Ability to hide other user's signature. (cosmetic)
Ability to hide avatars. (cosmetic)
Go To First Unread Post inside a topic button.
Position the thread to your new post after posting (cosmetic)
Split topics in multiple pages for big topics to speed up things.
Subscriptiosn to a forum or a topic, which allows you to follow easily some topics, and maybe send you the new messages via email (don't actually know how that feature works, I'll have to check)
So this is basically the small list, but those are nice possibilities.. you probably have ideas of your own. I will also send a notification if your post gets deleted via email, with an explanation, of if it was moved to another forum, enhance the edit post system which let you modify the edit notice..
There is a lot of enhancements that can be done, but I don't want this system to become too complicated also, keep it stupid simple is the way to go, most of what I'm listing will be options in the profile.
And one thing that would be nice but would use lots of database space would be to have a real marker to know if you read THAT thread.. right now it just show you the threads since your last login...
And a nice makeover would be an idea, Sébastien doesn't like the new design
