Trying to imagine what a hypothetic Substance 2005 compilation could have been, I ended up with the following track listing (all tracks are in their original 12" versions when they exist or unless otherwise stated):

01 - Ceremony 02 - In A Lonely Place 03 - Procession 04 - Everything's Gone Green 05 - Cries And Whispers 06 - Mesh 07 - Temptation 08 - Hurt 09 - Blue Monday 10 - Confusion 11 - Thieves Like Us 12 - Lonesome Tonight 13 - Murder 14 - The Perfect Kiss 15 - Subculture 16 - Shellshock 17 - State Of The Nation 18 - Bizarre Love Triangle 19 - True Faith 20 - 1963 21 - Temptation (1987 Substance version) 22 - Confusion ( 1987 Substance version) 23 - Touched By The Hand Of God 24 - Blue Monday 1988 25 - Fine Time (Silk Mix) 26 - Don't Do It 27 - Round & Round 28 - Best & Marsh 29 - Vanishing point (Instrumental Making Out Mix) 30 - Run 2 31 - MTO (Minus Mix) 32 - The Happy One 33 - World In Motion 34 - Regret (Fire Island Mix) 35 - Ruined In A Day (Reunited In A Day Remix) 36 - Vicious Circle (Mike Haas Mix) 37 - World (Perfecto Mix) 38 - Spooky (Stadium Mix) 39 - True Faith-94 (Perfecto Mix) 40 - Nineteen63-95 (Arthur Baker Mix) 41 - Let's Go 42 - Blue Monday-95 (Hardfloor Remix) 43 - Crystal (Digweed & Muir Bedrock Mix) 44 - Behind Closed Doors 45 - Someone Like You (Gabriel & Dresden 911 Vocal Mix) 46 - 60 Miles An Hour (David Khane Mix) 47 - Sabotage 48 - Here To Stay 49 - Player In The League 50 - Such A Good Thing 51 - Krafty (The Glimmers 12" Extended Mix) 52 - Jetstream (Richard X Remix) 53 - Waiting For The Sirens' Call (Rich Costey Mix) 54 - Guilt Is A Useless Emotion (DJ Dan Club Mix)

I wanted to have all official singles in 12" or in a version that could be considered as 12" (which is not straightforward as from the Republic era). I decided to select full vocal versions (hence the choice of the Stadium mix instead of the Moulimix for Spooky and the very long Gabriel & Dresden 911 Vocal Mix for Someone Like You). I also wanted to have all original B sides (i.e., no dub versions or remixes of the A-sides). Yet, even with such criteria, it was sometimes hard to select one mix instead of another and I just let my personal preference decide (hence the David Khane mix of 60mph, which wasn't officially released, in place of the Supermen Lovers remix which I hate).

A few questions remain:

  • Does it make sense to keep the 1987 versions of Temptation and Confusion just because they are on the original Substance compilation?
  • Is it a good idea to put the 1988, 1994 and/or 1995 versions of BM, 1963 and TF since they are basically just remixes of the original single?
  • Does The Happy One belong to this compilation just because it was used on the Substance 1989 VHS?
  • When the radio versions were edits from the album versions, wouldn't it be better to use the album versions instead of remixes on this compilation? (e.g.: Crystal, Ruined In A Day, 60mph)

What do you think about it? What improvements would you suggest?

j'arrive à 59 titres en ne considerant que les années Factory.

En incluant toutes les faces B alors (versions "dub" et autres...)? J'ai fait le choix délibéré de les omettre, sinon ça devient inécoutable.
