I agree with you. "Temptation" and "EGG" had the JD sound but you could tell the New Order incarnation was starting to come out. Then you get "5 8 6" and "Blue Monday" and voilá, you have almost an entirely different band from its predecessor.

It was a start, you can hear the "new" NO sound coming through even at that early stage.

As per EGG and Procession its all part of the transitional change from the JD sound to a newer sound.

The transition spanned 5 key songs:

Procession EGG Temptation 586 Blue Monday

I've always felt that EGG was the key link within those five. However, I also believe that the other song who's importance is really underestimated is Hurt, which I reckon could be an ancestor of TPK (left-field view I know!).

very insightful, and i very much agree with you, Marko. in some ways, i've always seen the LP mix of 5 8 6 as being slightly reminiscent of TPK in structure, as well.

Thanks for the compliment! Anyone else see a connection between Hurt and TPK? Maybe that'll be a new thread on the main forum, I'll post it later.... :)

Temptation is such an uplifting song, and i just found out why. I'll quote Hooky here "on a quarter tab of LSD you can write great music, you can't drive a car, but you can write great music" and i thought NO never took drugs.

Yeh apparently drugs were a big part of NO's songwriting process, I believe I read somewhere that Barney was high on speed when he did that frantic chord solo on Love Vigilantes (I always wondered about that!) I think Temptation was a breakthrough because suddenly the whole mood of the band changed from moody grey trenchcoats to uplifting colourful new wave. I mean it's a love song isn't it? That in itself sets it a world apart from the JD era... :)

Everything's Gone Green is somewhat a cross between Procession and Temptation. And 586 is somewhat of a combination of Everything's Gone Green and Blue Monday. They all worked together pretty much (along with the whole Power, Corruption & Lies) to link Low-Life to Movement.

That probably made no sense. Ceremony, In A Lonely Place, Procession, Everything's Gone Green, Movement, Temptation and Power, Corruption & Lies linked Joy Division's music to Low-Life, a sort of 'missing link' to complete the transition from Joy Division to New Order.

Temptation was their first single NOT produced by Hannet. First song that is free of Ian, too, given the lyrical elements. The only thing that links this song to their past is the Denialesque guitar and bass jam (Taras version especially).

EGG, although full of new electronics and such, still is bound to the gloomy Order. The lyrics seem like Barney is asking for Ian's approval.

Theres a huge difference between Ceremony & Everythings Gone Green,only a small one between EGG & Temptation.
