Thank god they changed direction, otherwise they would have become nothing more than a pale imatation of JD.

Um....uh-uh.

Nothing wrong with Movement, in fact I find it to be quite a fascinating album... not as accessible and commercial as later releases but still a gem on it's own I think...

Movement is brilliant.

Its a difficult album,it sounds like a band who dont know where they wanna go. Its actually less a forward step than Closer. If they hadnt picked the sound path they took with PC&L i doubt theyd still be around. Well never know.

They would never have been so commercially successful--but like almanso says, it isn't always only about selling records

Movement was the first step after Ian died. Like getting back on the bike after crashing it at high speed. Sure it gets compared to JD. They had to start from somewhere with people who did not want to sing or write lyrics let alone could not sing or write lyrics.

I love this album. Sure the sound/production quality could have been better but they were at a peak musically. Steve's best drumming. DNE was a great choice for the first track--a direct answer to Insight. Denial also kicks ass.
This album proved that they could do it on their own and the songs they created afterwards only improved their status.

they where testing that what they where gonna do and where they there gonna go, put it that way with movement, i love the album so i praise it

I don't actually own a copy of Movement, but have some tracks from it such as Ceromony. Being a Joy Division fan I love that song. However Power Curruption and Lies to me isn't the album it could have been, their are some pretty great tracks on there in my opinion their are also some duffers which is a shame considering their is only 8 tracks on the thing.

I think it was a big mistake missing of Blue Monday from that album.

However the best tracks on Movement are possibly written by Ian Curtis theifore its probably a dman good job NO did change direction.

I think Temptation was the song that first made NO order ground breaking, then of course Blue Monday.

Well, to begin with, Ceremony wasn't on Movement; it was a non-album single. Next, Movement was definitely written by New Order only; Ian had nothing to do with it, and Barney was the one behind most of the arrangements anyway. Besides, you don't even own Movement? What kind of JD fan are you? I think it's the album that easily most sounds like JD.

Movement always sounds too muddy, and the songs, especially the vocals, aren't great live. Sure, someo f the instrumentation was good, but most of it sounds too tinny or too dated. Some dated songs from the later part of their career (like TBTHOG) sound good, but Movement sounds like the album of a band just experimenting, without having much of a goal.

Fook off. It's got some production blurbs since Hannett was way off his head with the Chinese Rock by that time, but the songs themselves are GOLDEN! Love that Joker....

I have to support the Pope on this one. Fook off! Movement has some outstanding tunes and the production is not that bad. Denial, Truth, ICB, Dreams Never End, The Him, Doubts Even Here, Chosen Time. Listen to their gig from 23 years ago, Hamburg, Germany. Outfuckingstanding show! Or watch the Taras Schverenko video. The songs on Movement were developed and played live and carried them through for quite a long time. It blows Republic away. Experimenting??? That what NO was all about until Technique toured.

I've watched Taras on 316, and it doesn't impress me. Barney's atrocious vocals (on everything except for Procession and EGG) just distract from almost everything.

Give the lad a break. True, his singing voice was sub par back then and really did not perfect until 1984. True he screwed the dog on Ceremony in Taras. But the rest of the set was pretty good IMHO. I'd take any song from of Movement in place of TBTHOG for the next tour.

I'd prefer the whole damn set from Taras be played than a bunch of pop (s)hits we've heard billions of times.

I meant all of NO/JD, so obviously including Movement. Isn't that the case? Ian would arrange things somewhat, but it was mostly Barney (especially after Ian was gone). I think someone said that anyway....

You ought to buy a copy of 'Movement' on CD, Ian, then give it to a lady who you care about for her birthday as a miniture mirror for her handbag. Make sure you listen to 'Dreams Never End' first though, it's the only decent track on the album.

'Ceremony' wasn't on 'Movement', by the way. :)

It always confuses me the amount of sh*t this album gets.

It was evolution from JD and contains all the elements that made me listen to JD.

It is STILL my favourite NO album. Sure the production is tinny at times but some of the songs are real gems.

Dreams Never End is one of the most endlessly listenable and upbeat tracks they've ever done. Truth is a moody monster, love the live versions (Steve on keyboard, Gillian on guitar) Chosen Time is intense (see Taras)

The rest is slightly less remarkable, but coming from complete and utter devistation in early 1980 to this in late 1981, it's quite an achievement.

If PCL sounded like Movement, they still would've harvested a more electronic-based sound, but would've turned lighter soon afterwards (Low Life era)

i love movement.especially dreams never end. some of the slow stuff on there is not very appealing,but its a great album....
