Music For Pleasure vs Republic

I may like Hooky's basslines, but I've never liked any of his side projects. So, Republic it is.

Easy one for me. Music For Pleasure is a fine album, which I've played regularly since I bought it.

Republic is merely "OK".

Republic,both mediocre but MFP is just a little less.

Republic... by miles.

Despite the great "junk", MFP is a silly pop-record with a David Potts trying to sound like Barney.

Republic has some hidden gems like "Special" and, yes, "Times Change".

Republic has three or four genuinely good New Order tracks on it. One of which is an all-time classic.

MFP has one genuinely good New Order track on it, played by 25% of New Order. The rest of it is no better than anyone else could have done. Possibly their best track IMHO, Ultra, was consigned to B-side status for some reason.

Republic for me hands down. Republic is the Wales of World Football, MFP the Luxembourg.

Republic was embarasing and i never play it, MFP was good and I still listen to it .

Yeah, but what about those annoying sub-Oasis tunes that really drag MFP waaaaaaaaay down??????????

Music for Pleasure every time. I think its a great album. You'll not go wrong with it.

I voted for Republic, but I do think Music for Pleasure gets a bad rap. Granted Nick Mason's production mutes some of the chaos, but what do you expect from a member of Pink Floyd. Problem Child, Don't Cry Wolf, and One Way Love are the stand out tracks for me.

Easy this one: Republic may not be the best NO album, still its better than Monaco's one.

O-kay. Took me a while to get that one.

I'm just glad someone did. Bit myopic around these parts sometimes. Maybe that would be a good poll: The 2 MFP's squaring off. I know who I'd vote for as I can't envision a scenario in which the Monaco album would ever be coming through my speakers ever again.

...I really like MONACO ( God bless that bass!!! ) and I thought MUSIC FOR PLEASURE sounded brilliant..... for the first 6 months ....but a bit like a piece of bubblegum - it felt empty after a while...and funny thing is now, listening to REPUBLIC ( after ignoring it for nearly 10 years, eventhough I have 5 versions of that CD...) it sounds better than I first heard it...maybe I had higher expectations the first time around.

Anyway, I still have to go for MONACO cuz I think MUSIC FOR PLEASURE is the best release for any Hooky's side project!! ( anyone know how to get their hands on the 2-LP vinyl version of this?..thanks )

My thoughts exactly. Besides, although MFP has some good tunes, it lacks Barney's singing - Hooky can't sing and Pottsy may as well be Barney, but without that little air of vulnerability that makes NO so good. Good poll though - the worst NO album v one of the best side project ones.

Never liked Monaco, and probably never will... So it's got to be Republic for me.

The two albums are so different that it's a bit difficult for me to compare them. A list of my favourite songs from them would probably run in this order:

Good selection methodology Andy - don't think I can be fussed to go to such lengths though - even though a final choice has eluded me for days now.

I agree with Nic that MFP has 4 great tracks in :WDYWFM, Shine, Happy Jack and Junk.

Republic has Regret, Special, World (Perfecto), RIAD (Reunited), Spooky (Stadium) and Avalanche.

Both have great artwork, MFP has Hookybass, Republic is actually NO, but needs some remixes to bring out its full glory.

As they stand, it would have to be MFP by a micron, with remixes, Republic quite easily.

So, MFP it is then.

Music for Pleasure is better as *album* I mean.
