I remember an NME interview around 1990 (tenth anniversary, etc) when Wilson and the band were asked if, had Ian not died, he would have been involved in the Hacienda/dance music/footie records, and the answer came back "yes".
I'm not sure. I can see the dance thing (he liked Moroder and KW, obviously) but I can't see the footie thing. I'm also not sure that they would've been filling the world's arenas with their claustrophobic brand of rock. Perhaps they would have changed their sound - I'm sure Ian would have been up for a bit of E.
What do you lot think? Or is this just pointless hypothetical speculation?
