neither. just a formal civil servant who made really good music and was human like the rest of us.
Going to have to say Genius here. His lyrics are so incredible, no one has ever written like that. Not Jim Morrison before him, nor morrissey after him.

I agree with you Ms Wood, Ian was a normal guy, married to a normal woman, with a normal daughter and they all lived in a normal house. It's just that Ian wrote some of the most emotional lyrics of all time. How does a normal guy go about doing that?
GENIUS definitely !!! That goes without saying. And yes, he was a normal bloke (thank Heavens)like all of us... But inni't one of the aspect we love so much about NEWorder/Joy Division : their Human side 1st of all... That always kept me closer to their Music than anyone else. That's 1 of the many points that make them TRULY UNIQUE.
A tragic, troubled genius whose legacy will never be forgotten as long as music lives on. I can think of no other lyricist brave enough to take a scalpel to their soul and display the wounds for all to see. His lyrics are deep, dark, poetry.
Reading 'touching from a distance' one leans towards twat. But then you listen to the music... the lyrics...
I think he was a man with a lost of problems... who made great lyrics and music. When you match the lyrics with his experiences - its brilliant poetry. Those lyrics were really expressing real, deep hurt.
Hard question for a definite answer I suppose.
80 % Genius...20% twat (he read the daily mail, voted conservative and abit of a shit towards his wife)
Just find it incredible sometimes to think he wrote those lyrics at such a young age.late teens and early twenties. You`d think the lyrics were written by someone ancient.
Bloody wife hater.
I think it was Thackeray (hope I've spelt his name right) who said that comparing the mind of Shakespeare with that of an ordinary man was like comparing the length of two maggots. An enigmatic statement I suppose, but I think he was saying that he did not believe in the concept of genius. Curtis was a twat for killing himself perhaps. I heard Tony Wilson say on Australian radio that Curtis should have hung around (no pun intended) until JD got to America then he could have shagged his way across the States and become a relatively happy man again. His death was probably the most unromantic in the history of rock. To hang oneself above a washer/dryer...
An absolute genius and a complete and utter twat. His presence in the history of pop music is unsurpassable and possesses a completely unique brilliance, but he was a selfish bastard in his personal life.
Lyracial, poetic genius. The only dark/depressing etc, etc, etc :barf: thing about him was the poor bastards epilespy.

I'll humbly admit, Ian is as follows:
75% genius. 24% poet. 1% twat.
'Nuff said. Gotta love the man.
Well according to the Twenty Four Hour Party People sleeve,he was the Genius,A Wilson the twat and Shaun Ryder the poet.
