Hi guys
Do you think they sound quite similar ? Yes,in my opinion. I wanna know about yours.
i think they're pretty different. the chemicals are more sophisticated (of course, by the time they released 'exit planet dust,' the sound of techno music had changed since the height of 808's popularity). they both use guest vocalists and vary between softer, chilled sounds and harder dance music, but there's a marked difference in their style.
i'm sure my own personal experiences affect the way i look at both groups, as well. when 808 state were popular i was a teenager going to raves, dropping acid and just getting into dance music. by the time the chemical brothers came around, i was in my 20s, more settled in my own skin, i'd already experienced ecstasy and the whole thing and i was a bit more mature myself, so the music just sounded different...and seeing them live was a different experience than seeing 808 state live because i was a bit older and it wasn't all so new to me. who knows?
for the record, i prefer the chemical brothers. :D
No, 808 State were instigators of techno (listen to "Olympic" for reference) whereas The Chemical Brothers last album "Come With Us" sucked (apart from "Star Guitar" and "The Test"), actually I'm listening to "Dig Your Own Hole" right now and the difference between the two bands is really evident to me.
I don't think they sound anything like each other. 808 State are more like old-school rave and the Chems (who I prefer) are a bit more sophisticated.
not at all. i think 808 has a much more "ambient" background. and ChemBros are a lot "funkier".
I think the Chems are a wee bit harder than 808...but I hate the latest thing I've heard by the Chems...why did they partner with Flaming Lips?![]()
Not really similar IMO, but I just wanna know why Life Is Sweet isn't on the Chems new singles album ![]()
I don't think so, at least not QUITE similar. 808 State from what I last heard had an early techno/rave feel to it while Chem Bros. have a harder feel to them with more bpm or something. Plus the latter works with occasional guest vocalists not entirely dissimilar to Massive Attack in that regard.
Pacific State was a blinder in its day & still sounds good, but 808`s other stuff sounds dated nowdays. Chemical Brothers albums,i think, have stood up quite well-Exit Planet Dust is 10 years old,Sasha still drops Life Is Sweet now & then. Prefer Spanish Heart to Out Of Control though.
agree, but I dont think they sound similar like the thread startin fella implies, especialy live
