Ian's untimely death preserved the legacy of JD. Joy Division never had to suffer the embarassing demise that many bands put us through. How far and in what driection would they have gone?
Personally, I think his vocals would have limited tha band to some extent. Too dark, too strange, something not quite right. Yet they were perfect for JD. Barney's, on the other hand IMHO, are much better in terms of appeal and aesthetics. Look at Stan Ridgeway.
In my opinion Joy Division would be the most sucessful anti-commercial band ever.Ian was considered one of the greatest poets ever. I think Joy Division would sound a bit like New Order today.Bernard was the person who will show the band the new direction.Imagine these great music written by New Order with Ian's lyrics and voice on it. Maybe Tony Wilson made some pressures for Ian's solo career but he as a friend of the band members would never leave them behind. Joy division forever...
If Ian had lived he would have quit Joy Division and opened a bookstore(at least that's what i've read).
Let me just put in my two cents and say that I voted "Cooler than Jesus" because I can't think they'd have been massive here in the States, I could be comfortable with a New Order-ish level of success for them over here but once they started appearing on "American Bandstand" or Dead Souls was used for a "Solid Gold" dance number I would've lost interest...

If Ian had lived,they probably wouldve been succesful for another 5 years,but JD wouldve run its course by then & i doubt they would still be around.
If Ian Curtis was still alive we would have had no 'Power, Corruption & Lies', no 'Blue Monday', no 'B.L.T' (yes, the sandwich! 
), no 'Technique', no 'World In Motion', no Electronic, Other Two, blah blah blah (probably), no 'Get Ready'....
Had Joy Division carried on into the 80s & beyond, they would have ended up like Echo & The Bunnymen, an over-rated pseudo-goth shebang who noone gave a shiny shite about at the end.
Thank the Lord for Bernard Sumners singing, thank the Lord for the explosion of dance music & hip-hop in the early 1980s, thank the lord for the 1990 England World Cup Squad.... Im sorry that Curtis hanged himself, but if he hadnt, Id hope hed quit J.D to become a chartered accountant or something.... :D

My wifes epileptic, & shes awful with numbers. She did work at a bank in America for a couple of years before moving over here, though!... 
I dont know why, but Ive got a disturbing tendancy to criticise or dislike rock stars who have commited suicide. Ive never been Ian Curtis biggest supporter, & I can`t stand Kurt Cobain either!
Remind me of some more musicians who took their own lives & I`ll tell you whether I hate them or not. Chances are, I do! :headoff:
Ian Curtis, even though, i would beleived they would of taken a New Order turn somewhere, and had ian still sing, but with more a pop sound that new order had, but with the powerful lyrics of ian, they would of overcame the beatles and all those rock bands of all our generations, and became one of the most important music history of our time i beleive. They would of ruled the world.
