I really dislike this song, but i just got a copy of the "exclusive remix" done for "Melody Maker" magazine. Barney has re-done the vocals and there are other bits and pieces in it, and it sounds fantastic, the first time i have really enjoyed this song. Do you like this version, or is the original alright with you?

I like both the Low Life and Substance versions. To me it is a very NO sounding song.

On Low Life it brings out the "really good song, too bad it was recorded in a broom closet" feel to it and then on Substance it becomes a polished, over the top dance track. I bet somebody could do a good remake of the track one of these days.

Brilliant idea.

This song really doesn't do it for me compared to other NO songs. It's quite boring, nothing to it.

Just played this yesterday for the first time in 6 months and was blown away by how great it is.

I love the Low Life and Substance versions. Low Life mix is good for moody miserability and Substance mix is good for kicking yourself up the ass to.

I also thought 'show off by yourself' was 'shaft by yourself' er... ha...

95% IMHO.

This is one song I loved 20 years ago. It has not really aged well and I often skip it. I find the Low Life version a lot better than the extended one on Substance.

The 12" is quite spectacular, in a good way. Dub-vulture is one of the weirdest songs i've ever heard. It goes along great as a hi-nrg dance track and then the last minute or so, it just goes nuts

Anyone heard the Razormaid mix where theres 2 other singers on it? They are quite possibly the shittest singers of all time. How anyone thought that was even a remotely good idea totally confuses me

I love all the versions... except... the John Robbie Remix Edit, or the Substance 1987 Version.

Why?? Because, the best part of the song... was edited and deleted. I'm talking about the middle to end part of the John Robbie Remix FULL 12" Version at 7:26.

I loved this song years ago when Low Life came out- Probably because I'd never heard anything like it before. Then I heard the Robie remix and loved the extra sequencer stuff but was puzzled by all the backing vocals... Still got well into it and I've enjoyed being thrown off the track by NO's left field digressions.

Don't think I've heard the Razormaid mixes. But I've heard there's a remix bootleg called "Substance Abuse"? Anyone know about this and where I can find it?

RichShan, the Razormaid versions is found in "In Hindsight," released in September 1998. It has 3 Subculture 'Razormaid' versions, labelled sam west mix, deborah lyall mix, and berlin mix.
