CRIES AND WHISPERS

A great song, recorded between "Movement" and "PC&L" and along with "Procession", "EEG", "Mesh", "Temptation" and "Hurt" these six songs show how quickly they were changing and progressing. "C & W" is my favourite song by newOrder. So what do you think of it?

and i just realised this should be in weekly song review.

it precedes movement, along with procession and mesh. these were all features of their earliest gigs and are the very first new order material, both mesh and cries and whispers also had completely different lyrics in all those early live appearances

It's a curious one. Started life right at the beginning of New Order, and got dropped from the live set as soon as they'd written most of Movement. Then for some reason got dragged out again to be recorded (was it a Movement outtake I wonder ?), but didn't return to the live set until the 83 US tour, when it was a pretty regular feature. On their return to England it was dropped forever. Mesh was always lumped in together, and had a similar fate expect it didn't reappear on the US 83 tour.

... and I will remind eveyone who doesn't already know that it IS the one on the Substance CD! (mislabeled Mesh - funny noises at start like a demented police car!)

I wonder were you can find a live version of this? i would love to hear it.

Great song.Didn`t get to hear it until about 1986 when i bought the EGG 12".

It took me ages to figure that out.

could someone send me a version of Cries and Wisphers and Mesh? i dont know the differance.....in fact can anyone let me hear all 6 of the inbetween songs lol

Cries & Whispers= Begins with droning synth "Bellow the surface..."

Mesh = Hooky's bass starts it, "Full of desire..etc."

okie so substance put the wrong name i think i got it know, but never heard MEsh then....

Never realy liked C&W much (or Country & Western), but I like Mesh a lot more!

2. Nice synths, and when Steve's drumming goes ballistic towards the middle/end, what kind of drum mod/kit was he using? Hooky's bass also really comes out here (where it bloody well should be).

3. Barney's voice isn't quite there yet, but the lyrics and his delivery make up for it.

Check the Song Browser for live dates. There were a few 1980 gigs on STG that had these tunes. Loved Hooky singing Mesh, sounded very new wave.

One of my favs... best bit for me is where Hooky is picking harmonics on his 6 string bass during the 'ship sails out to sea' verse. Great live track.

It's possibly my all-time favorite New Order song. It's definately in my top 5. The lyrics are some of Barney's best.

The beginning synths are great - quite ominous.

But the best part is the 7 seconds from 1:57 - 2:03. I could listen to this part of the song all day.

The only part I don't like is that in parts of the song some of the effects drown out the bass - or maybe that's only my hearing going in old age. :D

Great movie. One of Bergman's best.

I love this period of stuff around the Movement time - you can smell the evolution... makes you wonder if they'd gone this way with Ian still around...

right. so clean .inside- you'll find that truth is never kind. Steve Morris -indeed - 'a great little relevation.' because everyone think that its called Mesh. but it isn't.

sorry- know that's redundant. esp. this late in the game. just is/ has been an absolute, miles ahead, clear favourite. 1.like- it all. 2. dislike-maybe that didn't get more exposure. 3. what's- brilliant lyrics. 4.- 90% positive.

A very underrated song and a great document of NO evolving out of the ashes of JD. Should have been on Movement.

Yeah, agree with all above. It always gets a play on those evening in when I get all the vinyl out and play it in order. There's a certain taut emotion to the B side of the EGG 12", not sure if it's in the production technique but it seems like you can hear em really wanting to let go...

Disagree with comments about The Him. That's one of my favourite NO songs:)

I too agree with you all. One of my very favourites (and Mesh also for that matter). Always quoted by me when asked what are my all time NewOrder substantials. Loved it since first heard it way back then... And ever since ! Greetings to you all.

I've just finished doing a cover version of this. It's one of my favourite tracks ever, don't know why. The atmosphere I suppose, plus the times I was having when I first heard it.

I think I've improved on the original. Is that sacrilegious, egotistical or just deluded? Check it out. I've put it on MySpace and Last.fm as a free download. Just waiting for Warner to sue me for copyright infringement now.
