I think SPECIAL is one of the most atmosperic and beautiful songs New Order has ever created. To tell all you fans the truth, the album REPUBLIC was disappointing to me the first time I heard it. I actually thought it was weak. But upon repeated listening, it became a gem to me among New Order albums. It is a strong album-such an incredible mixture of intricate sounds. When I first heard SPECIAL I think I overlooked it dismissing it as too slow. But it really grew on me. It takes me to a different place every time I listen to it. I think it has some remarkable singing from Sumner as well.

I agree! Special is one of New Order's greatest songs! its very moving and beautiful.
I like Republic a lot as well. The production is a bit too smooth, andHooky is too low in the mix, but the songwriting on a lot of the songs is really good.....and the album flows cohesively. Its a very sad album. I like listenting to it on rainy days.
Gets my vote too. I'm sure I read Steve saying it was recorded to have a Massive Attack feel to it. See what he means.
Republic is a very good A side (in old vinyl sense) but a poor B side compared to other NO albums. However this is THE decent track on the B side

I am not mad, then.
My favourite on this album which I do not play very often.
Changed completely, for the worse, by the Lyrics yet has the same Jangle.
Time flies. Amazed
that
Movement '81, PCL, Low- Life through BBC Radio Live '92
all were before it.
One of my all-time favourite New Order songs, on what I think is an album under-rated by the fans, Republic is flawless start to finish
great song. great outro that gives more than just a nod to Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy too!
Special is beautiful and after Regret the only song on the album which is typical New Order. The other songs could go as Electronic or Other Two as well. They lack too much Hooky to be New Order.
