  3. "So why don't you piss off"

  5. I'll have to wait until I see it with my own eyes (as opposed to a picture online) but I do think it's kinda funny, certainly flys in the face of Peter Saville's earlier stuff.

  1. Best bit

This is a song exclusively made of best bits 2. Worst bit

:nono: Agree with the Tabbsy, Major you are sailing perilously close to rank heresy here.

  1. Why you love/hate it...

Because it is a song i have often heard 15 times in a row and I could never get tired of listening to it, for its sublime beauty, for its funny lyrics, cos it has got one of the most beautiful song titles ever, for its apparent simplicity...Because they are playing it life...

Still waiting to get it. Come to you later on this.

  1. Best bit: the song.
  2. Worst bit: after the song has finished.
  3. Why you love/hate it: the music, the lyrics, the way Barney sings... it's just perfect
  4. A percentage rating: 99% (ex-aequo with The Perfect Kiss. Only Temptation would get 100% from me).
  5. Do you love or hate the Retro artwork? Difficult to say before I have it. But I have no problem with the front picture (the big bird playing football with a metal ball). I'd like to see what's inside.

  1. the ethereal sound of the song, great combo of synth and hooky's bass.

  2. can't think of anything, really.

  3. see #1, and it's beautiful and mellow. best off PC&L in my opinion.

  4. 95%

  5. from what i've seen of it (only the eagle and discoball, mind you), not really my taste. not that i hate discoballs or birds, mind you....

Best bit for me, to be particular with such a great song, is that the simple synth riff just captivates me in a wondrous way, and the melodica is a great touch.

Worst bit: just another voice saying that there is nothing wrong with this beauty.

Loved it from the first listen on PCL, and I was blown away when they opened with it live at my first NO show; pretty damn sure I stood there with my mouth open.

Rating 99%

Also haven't seen Retro in person, so I'm gonna wait to pass true judgement for a bit.

1 So why don't you piss off.....or the fact they ressurected it fer the live shows.....or the synths all the way through... 2 that I can't get my hands on the Velocity Girl version 3 Just a fantastic New Order sounding record 4 90% 5 neither love nor loathe it;)

  1. Best bit - the string synth sounds - blissful waves

  2. Worst bit - that I spent 15 years hating this track

  3. Love/hate - I liked it when it was released, then sort of went off it in 1985. Since the summer shows it has rocketed back up to a place in my personal NO Top 5.

  4. Percentage - 95%

  5. Retro artwork ? - it's well-packaged and designed. Not 100% convinced about the eagle etc, but I wouldn't have thought it will in any way affect my enjoyment of the product.

  1. best bit: the "why don´t you piss off" line

  3. why you love/hate it: i realize it´s a good song but it never grew that much on me

best--after the lyrics, it set the standard for NO instrumental endings. Everyone in complete sync jamming away with their most elegant song worst--not having it with me when I need to hear it rating--100% The only other song I would rank as perfection retro art--disco ball for dance music, eagle for fascism, fits the band well

Sheer class great to listen to.

Somewhere in the song when Stephens rhythms and Hookys bass flow along it makes me think of vast waves in rhythm upon a great ocean for some reason.Genius.

I really don´t understand all the fuss about this song. The song is very simple and childish.

You'd probably say the same thing about Europe Endless(The "KW-1" working title of YSF is Barney's acknowledgement of Kraftwerk's influence on this track and Europe Endless is the closest in feel to YSF). Go forth, seek out Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express(on which Europe Endless is contained).Better still, have a listen to Man Machine & Computer World as well "and your training will be complete my young Padawan learner"(I knew I'd use that quote on a NOOL forum one of these days!!).

BTW Bere, that previous verbose rant wasnt directed at you; I just forgot to quote Runwild1's comments from page one. he was being a bit of a philistine(And I DON'T mean one of Phil C's German cousins!!). Hopefully after giving those pointers he may come up with a more favourable assesment of this slightly spiky masterpiece.

One of their best-ever songs.

Got to love the line "So why don't you piss off."

I remember the title for it being KW1 in tribute to Kraftwerk's "Europe Endless" on PCL test pressings.

Luckily, I saw them do it in concert in Toronto in November, 1986 at Massey Hall.

  5. prolly the only electronic track-just about where I can say its beautiful

forgot about Retro-typical saville, spare almost Teutonic. Kinda cool to look at, abstract as all hell-a real head scratcher "like what does THAT mean-but it looks really bitchin'"

  1. BEST BIT - It's all perfect, but me being a technophobe,I would say the string synth, because it always brings a lump to my throat whenever I play it.It's even an MP3 on my phone I play at work when I can't be arsed reading.

  2. WORST BIT - When it ends!

  3. WHAT I LOVE - see 1 above,and it's one of the best lyrics,including "why don't you piss off"

  4. PERCENTAGE? - 100 %

  5. RETRO ARTWORK? - It's excellent! It cheekily combines the "Nazi" association they had in the early days with dancefloor.

  2. I don't think there's a worst bit in the entire song.
  3. "You caught me at a bad time/So why don't you piss off" To hear those words coming out of such an elegant masterpiece pretty much describes New Order for me.

Best Bit - Everything, the bass, the lush keyboard and barneys vocal

Worst bit - there isn't one

One of the best New order tracks ever made, always makes me feel happy

one of the few songs that acutally scores the full honours 100%!!

Not one of the best covers, but I like birds but not (disco) balls! it certainly very noticable but it doesn;t really look like a NO cover.

huh. so pretty much everyone here loves everything about this song--?

i think it's a great electronic song, and i love the kraftwerkiness of it--any repetitive aspects don't bother me at all. but whenever the vocals set in..... i feel almost like a little twinge of despair--like, man, this great song is being ruined! of all the numbers with iffy vocals in their oeuvre, it's the only n.o. song i really really wish had been instrumental. it's not so much the quality of the singing itself, just that the performance feels more phoned in than ever--lyrics really sound as if made up on the fly in the studio (and i guess this may in fact have been the case)--plus the vocal melody (?? not a musician so don't know proper terminology) doesn't complement the rest of it at all... the whole vocal track to me feels as if thrown in as an afterthought because someone felt the song *had* to have singing in it.

anyone...? no?

Who keeps digging this shit up???

  1. Best bit - Beautiful Synth melody and Melodica
  2. Worst bit - My copy of PCL skips during the instrumental to the next track, so I have to go over to the computer to listen to it >_< , Also the Cure stole the melodica melody for the overblown song "Pictures of You" on "Disintegration" (Only song by The Cure I truely hate with avengence..)
  3. Why you love/hate it...Hooky deciding to be tasteful with his bass playing for once
  4. A percentage rating 90%, just because of Bernards vocals at times
  5. Do you love or hate the Retro artwork? I'll go either way on it..wait...
