There's a lot of people in this country with a lot of ill-informed expectations for this game. Reckon we'll find it tough to score. This could be the game we get found out.
A pity if we do because we'd stand a chance against either QF opponent. Must be the least-intimidating section of the draw.

Based on their previous performances (including the Brazil vs Australia match), I'm going to go for 2-1 Australia.
There and again, I thought that the Dutch would beat Portugal last night, so what do I know! 
Gonna be a close one - Aus have a great chance, but the Italian experience may just prove enough - extra time, if only so I can watch a bit of it after I get back from work...

Australia Were robbed, thats all i can say very unfair penalty but consitent refereeing i see bloody shit.
Too bad for the Aussies. :( They should have attacked more with the advantage, instead of saving all their subsitutions. Yes, in slow motion replay that was a bad call, but Neill didn't need to fall, either, so he helped contribute to the bad call. By the way, what was up with Totti's goal celebration? Sucking his thumb? That belongs in the Worst World Cup Celebrations thread.

That's why I hate the italian soccer teams... Always acting to get weird penalties, provoking red cards 'n stuff... That's not fair play... Italian soccer sucks... I'm angry as hell

Penalty was dubious but in truth, the red card may have been a little kind too.
You just don't get chances like this in World Cups too often. Playing 10 men, with a QF versus Switzerland or Ukraine looming.
The penalty was milked in typical fashion but credit to them for totally locking us out at the back. Plus they had the better chances early. Just wish we'd tried something different with all the possession we had, maybe swung Kennedy on and start lobbing the crosses in high.
Terribly harsh on Lucas Neill, he's had a mighty tournament but that last minute will be a millstone for a while. He looked devastated.

Got asked today why i was rooting for the Aussies in this one and i replied:
a) cos Italy are so boring to watch
b) cos i love to see Aussies doing crap at sports they are good at, and good at sports they are crap at.
Italy's game is so greedy! I'm very sorry for Aussies, they deserved something much better.

Watching the match, I thought for sure that the Socceroos outchanced and outshot the Azzurri. But after looking up the game stats, it turns out that Italy had 6 shots on goal to Australia's 4. The ball possession though was 59% to 41% in favour of Australia.
I think the penalty kick call was legit. You can't just lay down in front of someone. Even in American football or hockey, that's called tripping. Besides just before that, the ref let the other defender get away with tugging at Grosso's jersey.
Can you tell that I support the Azzurri? If I didn't, it would be high treason.

No, but I can tell you don't know your arse from your elbow when it comes to football! I had to run this post through google to find out what you were on about! Stick to moose-chasing! 
Real shame for the Socceroos, cos they played so well and with so much belief in so many respects, but they really should've tried to punish the Italians when they were down to 10 - stick another big man up front and really go for it - the Italians' experience meant that the longer the game went on for the more chance they had to get a result... Grosso was looking for the penalty but the defender offered him a great excuse to make it look like one...

the jersey tug was outside the box, im not totally convinced about that penalty, i think the ref could have let that go.

Anywhere else on the pitch, that would have been called a foul and no one would have questioned yet. Grosso played it up a bit but barely.
By the way, isn't a moderator suppose to discourage flaming?
Anyone with half a brain knows you don't chase moose; you keep your distance and hope they don't go licking for salt on the highway.

We can and do have a legitimate gripe about the penalty decision which was tenuous at best. Another example of the shabby standard of officiating that's taking the gloss off this tournament. We've copped it in every game.
Will FIFA do anything about it? They seem toothless to me, driven by the agendas of the few. The technology's there to help bring the game forward.

Intent? It's amazing how the ref can be so correct about any alleged defender intent when he was so incorrect about the dive.
As for FIFA, why put up with their sloppy, corrupt handling of the game any longer? What will it take for change? Maybe we'll see another hand-balled goal scored against England in the final and all hell will break loose?
Why wouldn't they consider extra officials in the game? Or consider using technology to adjudicate certain decisions? It's clear to many during this WC that the game has evolved far beyond adequate control by one ref and linesmen. I mean, you've got middle-aged refs puffing along after elite athletes moving the ball at a hell of a gait. The sport is ultra-professional now, there's so much more at stake, why put up with second-rate officiating?

I agree that adding a second ref makes sense. It's too tough a job for one person, covering all that field with world class athletes for 90 minutes. Plus, it puts too much power/responsiblity in one man's hands.
Instant replay may be OK for certain scenarios too.
Instant replay would certainly be good when it comes to goals. In the France/Korea match, the Korean keeper caught the ball behind the goal line, but not realizing it, the ref didn't call it a goal. In hockey, video replay has certainly improved matters when it comes to goals, even if it does sometimes take over five minutes.
Intent should only matter when it comes to cards and handballs. When you tackle a player, you go for the ball but all to often wind up with the shin. Even though you intended to get the ball, it's a foul and rightfully so. It's about the effect to the play.
The Aussie's were robbed; shame you didn't manage to get a goal in for the 30 minutes with 10 Italian men though...

Agreed my friend, on most of those points, but it's a discussion that's gone on for years, and still nothing is done about it.
If the above situation does happen to England, all hell will break loose, cars and shops will be smashed up and many people, no doubt. We'll just get a ban, not a new and improved system to stop bad decisions/ cheats etc....

We're a bit more civilized here in the states. Here, we only riot, set fires, and tip over cars when our sports teams win championships.
