Sorry I don't normally cut and paste, but DID YOU SEE THIS TACKLE?

The FA are studying their own disciplinary procedures to see whether they can take action against Manchester City defender Ben Thatcher after his horrific clash with Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes.

Thatcher was shown a yellow card by referee Dermot Gallagher for elbowing Mendes in the head during the goalless draw at Eastlands, with the Portuguese midfielder needing hospital treatment after suffering a fit as he was being stretchered from the pitch.

Usually Thatcher's booking would be the end of the matter, but the FA want to study the possibilities of taking more serious steps.

An FA spokesman confirmed: "We are looking at whether this may possibly be an exceptional case and what options may exist under our disciplinary regulations."

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp had called for action straight after the game, saying: "The FA have to do something. It is there for all to see.

"I do not want to see anyone suspended, but how could that possibly not be a red card? What do you have to do to get a red, kill someone?"

Meanwhile, Portsmouth have confirmed that Mendes had been released from hospital after a night under observation.

A club statement read: "Pedro Mendes will be returning from Manchester accompanied after spending the night at the Manchester Royal Infirmary for observation and scans.

"He will continue to be under medical and neurological supervision during the forthcoming week."

Mr....? I thought you were a bird :uhoh:

But that tackle was worse than Essien's on Hamann last year, talk about a forearm smash - he needs to cool his heels for a few weeks. :nonono:

It definitely should have been a red card, maybe he mistook him for Beckham and was getting his own back!

I'm all for a crunching tackle and think the game's lost something by going soft but that was a disgrace, the ball was virtually out of play and a challenge wasn't needed, a vicious premeditated assault in my book.

The FA ought to be able to bring him up on a charge, sod the rules about referees decisions not being changed. Greater Manchester Police are looking into it so hopefully something will happen.

If your defenders (and defensive midfielders for that matter) havent been booked ten times for xmas then they havent been doing their job properly, quite frankly.

Still, said tackle was maybe a touch excessive.

Nothing more than a second rate thug, he did something similar a few years back and fractured the lad's cheekbone.

I hope he gets what he deserves, good news on Mendes though, he was on his way back to Portsmouth today.

mmshiny ! Thanks, Steve, for nod towards the Skysports site. Hadn't occurred to me to look there.

The tackle was a hard discrace. Sure the aim is to gain possession at most cost. But do unto others as you'd expect ..and all that. There wasn't any sign of 'o Shite have gone and whacked him against the boards.' Hopefully he'll be right. 100 percent again.

All good sport has hard play and violence. This latest didn't include the play fair ticket.
