How anyone thinks Defoe is a player of international standard is beyond me. His performance last night was as bad as anything Heskey ever did for England. Yet here was the player who wouldve won us the World Cup if he's gone, according to some.
Last nights performance was pathetic. Yes we won, but on the same night the Germans beat San Marino 13-0 away from home, we struggle and hold on for a 1-0 win against the only team Andorra have ever beaten.
At least defoe runs around a bit and scores a few-still shite tho

So who would you have played up front last night then? It seemed very much to me as though the whole side suffered from bad pitch syndrome, they expected bobbles so got too tentative in the first touch and that stifled the play. Phil Neville was simply awful, and Downing looked out of his depth again. And if he's out of his depth against Andorra and Macedonia, he's fucked as an international. They played with fear last night.
Downing: The winger who can't beat the defender. classic! why is is he in? have any fans actually seen him play? i've never even heard him interviewed. The mute winger.
still reckon Lampard has to go. but all will be forgotten when he 
scores a free kick or 25 yarder soon.

I think some people agreed that Defoe would have been a better choice than Walcott as a striker! There was no talk, at all, of Defoe being the key person that would "win" England the World Cup. He would have been my fave out of a piss poor selection.
2 seasons ago, Defoe was a brilliant striker, scoring on the regs for Tottenham Hotspur. He lost his place last year for various reasons and this contributed to a lack of form when he did get to play for Spurs. Shame really, because he was a good player, and I don't think you can slate his form for England when he has not really had a fair crack of the whip!
I'm not saying he should have a place, but I think if you want to slate players for Englands continuous poor form, someone like Lampard, who makes it into the team, regardless of being totally shit for some time now, warrants a thread of his own.
Englands problem will always be, they will never have a manager that has the balls to drop the big names, despite poor form. That's where the problems lie, but it's easy to shove the blame on players that do not have a regular place!
Defoe's in the team despite not being a regular first-teamer or goalscorer for Spurs. Meanwhile, bent and johnson are in the first XIs of their (admittedly average) teams and are proven goalscorers.
Why no competition for places??

2 seasons ago, defoe was PLAYING for Spurs! Mclaren is picking someone who cant get in a team ahead of Robbie Fucking Keane! And he has had a fair crack of the whip! 19 cracks from what I can see.
