Just heard. How pathetic. 3 games and 4 points into the season and he's gone. Football makes me sick at times. What now for Newcastle? Gulliet on a 5 yr £8m contract only to be sacked after 8 months.

What a BIG club! Pathetic.

I'm surprised he lasted this long. Eight months. Threw the toys out of the pram when he couldnt do the one thing that made him a good manager, i.e spend a fortune on new players.

Angry Newcastle supporters have gathered at St James' Park to protest amid growing speculation manager Kevin Keegan is set to leave the club.Chants of 'sack the board' were repeated as fans voiced their dissatisfaction at reports Keegan was set to leave or be sacked only eight months after his high-profile return to Tyneside.

Fans arrived at the ground to show their support for the man they hail as their 'Messiah' but media were forced by security guards to leave the stadium grounds as the club declined to comment on reports of Keegan's exit.

Keegan's apparently imminent departure is thought to relate to the club's transfer policy and the level of influence he is afforded as manager.

James Milner was sold to Aston Villa last week despite Keegan previously insisting he wanted to keep the winger, while rumours suggest the arrivals of Xisco and Ignacio Gonzalez on Monday were not on his say-so.

One fan outside St James' Park said: "We're supporting Keegan. We don't like Dennis Wise and we don't like Mike Ashley.

"I don't know what was going on during the transfer window but still, you never thought he would leave.

"I heard this morning and couldn't believe it."

Another supporter said: "We'd like to know exactly what's happening because at the moment it's just rumours.

"One thing seems clear - Keegan is not here any more. Why, I don't know.

"I was up there (near the main entrance) thinking they might make a statement but nobody has come out.

"It is alienating fans but singing 'sack the board' doesn't do any good because Ashley can't sack himself. But he needs to be forward about what exactly is happening."

Keegan also managed the club between 1992 and 1997 Manager Kevin Keegan has left Newcastle United after only eight months in charge, BBC Radio 5 Live understands.

Speculation had been mounting over the 57-year-old's unhappiness with a lack of control over transfer activity.

The club's only business on transfer deadline day was a £5.7m swoop for Spanish striker Xisco and the loan signing of midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez.

The former England boss rejoined the Magpies in January, having managed at St James' Park between 1992 and 1997.

Newcastle are 11th in the Premier League having picked up just four points from their opening three games.
