Community final contestant list revealed - face-off rounds to begin shortly

Believe it or not, it's 104 songs that were received for the Community competition, this is success beyond our most optimistic thoughts. So in the next few days, there will be 27 face-offs, you, the members of NewOrderOnline, will be asked to find the winner between the multiple selection for the same song, as only one can go to the final round. The face-off round should start today, check the forums and the Community 2 website at http://community.neworderonline.com for more details. Since a few people used the privilege we gave them, an extra 15 days to polish their submission, face-off will be progressive and the last ones will be done starting March 16, so this means the final round should start in April. Stay tuned! And thanks again for this huge success!

Unknown actor lands star role in film of iconic singer's life

Sam Riley, who sings with Yorkshire rock group 10,000 Things, will take the part of Ian Curtis, the troubled lead singer with iconic Manchester band Joy Division who committed suicide in 1980, in a forthcoming biopic. It will be his first major acting role. The film, provisionally titled Control, will co-star Oscar-nominated Samantha Morton as Curtis's wife, Deborah. Filming begins on location in Manchester later this year. Mr Riley, 25, of Woodhouse, was told he had the role on his birthday.

New Order's Peter Hook selects The Hacienda Classics

Arguably one of the reasons we loose so much of our weekends to the evening hours, The Hacienda will launch an album aiming to catch those magic moments. Originally conceived, founded and financed in 1980 by Factory Records and New Order through a deal steered by Rob Gretton, the manager of the by then disbanded Joy Division, The Haçienda first opened its doors on May 21st 1982 sporting a Factory Records catalogue number of Fac 51, a pioneering interior designed by architect Ben Kelly and featured Bernard Manning as the opening night act. From that day forth until 1997 The Hacienda created an environment for electronic music expression that helped shaped UK club culture. ‘The Hacienda Classics’ is delivered by Peter Hook, bassist from New Order, who shared a founding hand in The Haçienda and remembers the good old days: “The Haçienda was built on blood, sweat and tears… I think it’s safe to say we made every mistake in the book, that said it was the most magical time and I wouldn’t change any of it. I have so many special memories from those days, the way the DJ’s would select the tunes especially for the club, I remember Sasha’s first set, the atmosphere was electric and he played the best set of his life, the music was perfect as was the crowd, when we left you just knew you’d been a spectator of something very special indeed’ To mirror The Haçienda’s genre bending music policy as well as chart a selection of the tracks that created The Haçienda and became anthems for the foundations of UK, even global clubbing as we know it, ‘Hooky’ has compiled three CD’s of definitive Haçienda classics bringing together elements of rare groove, soul hip hop, hip house, house and indie-dance painting a true picture of the highest moments of The Haçienda. Highlights and Hacienda moments from the album include New Order ‘Confusion’, Happy Mondays ‘Step On’, Orbital ‘Belfast’, Candi Staton ‘You Got The Love’, Doug Lazy ‘Let It Roll’, Inner City ‘Good Life’, Guy Called Gerald ‘Voodoo Ray’ and more.

Sam Riley will be Ian Curtis

Sam Riley has been cast as lead singer Ian Curtis and Alexandra Maria Lara as his lover Annik on music video director Anton Corbijn’s Control, his fact-based debut feature on UK post-punk band Joy Division. It is a first big role for newcomer Riley – the troubled Curtis was in his early 20s when he committed suicide in 1980 – whereas Lara played Hitler’s secretary in Downfall and has just finished work on Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth By Youth alongside Bruno Ganz and Tim Roth. It was already known that Samantha Morton would play Deborah Curtis, who wrote the book on which Matt Greenhalgh’s script is based. Curtis will also get a co-producer credit, as will former Joy Division manager and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, the subject of the biopic 24 Hour Party People. The producers are Orian Williams and Todd Eckert from Claraflora. The Control team is still closing finance but hopes to being shooting in mid-2006 in Manchester, Macclesfield and other areas of England. The film’s title was inspired by the classic Joy Division song She’s Lost Control. New Order, the band that succeeded Joy Division, will be recording new tracks for the film and the soundtrack album will feature a number of re-recorded Joy Division songs. Corbijn has worked on U2, Depeche Mode, Nirvana and Metallica videos and is also known for his photographs of such musicians as the late Miles Davis, R.E.M., David Bowie and Elvis Costello. New Order duo to pen Cracker soundtrack

THE new series of Cracker starring Robbie Coltrane as police psychologist Fitz is sure to be must-see TV, but I hear members of Manchester band New Order will be getting an earlier viewing than most. For drummer Stephen Morris and his wife, keyboard and guitar player Gillian, are writing the soundtrack for the Manchester-set series. "I was a fan when Cracker was last on TV so it's great to be doing the music for the new series," Stephen says. "The writer Jimmy McGovern asked us to do it. It also means we'll be two of the first people to see it." The husband and wife team, who live in Cheshire, also got their radio DJ debut last month on 96.2 The Revolution - and have been asked back to do more shows in future. "It was a bit nerve-wracking but a lot of fun," Stephen says.
