BBC's Jesus sings Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now

The BBC plans to mark the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ this Easter with an hour-long live procession through the streets of Manchester featuring pop stars from The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays and featuring songs by The Smiths and New Order. In the programme, called Manchester Passion, a character representing Jesus will sing the legendary Joy Division anthem Love Will Tear Us Apart before dueting his arch-betrayer Judas on the New Order hit Blue Monday, according to senior church sources involved in the production.

Peter Hook has found a new way to move the masses -- as a DJ

"I must confess that over my career, I've actually downplayed the importance of DJs," says Peter Hook. "It's such a different art form. Then all of a sudden you try it, and you think, 'Good God, these guys do work.' I used to be very cynical and very blasé about it. I can only apologize." Holding DJs in disregard is one thing. But such an attitude coming from a man who's partly responsible for the best-selling twelve-inch single of all time? It's downright ironic. And yet New Order's "Blue Monday," the 1983 slab of wax that remains a surefire floor-filler at any club in the world, counts Hook as a creator. As the bassist of New Order and, before that, the majestically doomed Joy Division, he's considered an architect of modern electronic music. And deservedly so: In the late '70s, Joy Division helped pioneer the fusion of punk force and dance beats that continues to inspire legit artists and copycats alike. After the suicide of singer Ian Curtis in 1980 -- dramatized in Control, a major motion picture directed by renowned rock photographer Anton Corbijn -- the survivors of Joy Division formed New Order. Splicing genres as varied as house, electro and rapturous indie rock, the band seeded the soil from which every Interpol and Franz Ferdinand has sprouted. Not that Hook won't admit to a bit of affectionate appropriation himself.

The Other Two writing music for Crackers?

Apparently they are writing the music for the new Robbie Coltrane series of Cracker which is currently being filmed in Manchester. Heard this on Revolution Radio at lunchtime today when Stephen and Gillian had popped into the radio studio and were plugging their first ever show on Revolution which is at 4.00pm on Sunday 15th January for three hours. Coltrane himself actually asked them to write the music for the series so he must be a fan of the Other Two.

Playing or spinning, he loves to show off

The last time bass guitarist Peter Hook performed in King County, his pioneering rock band New Order headlined at Seattle's Paramount Theatre. The year was 1989. At the time, Hook's group was promoting its magnificent album ``Technique,'' which set painfully confessional lyrics against a backdrop of thumping disco beats. Local radio stations already had pounced upon melodic tracks such as ``Fine Time,'' ``Round & Round'' and ``Dream Attack,'' so local fans attended the show in droves. They were not disappointed. There were some funny moments that night (like lead vocalist Bernard Sumner sighing, ``Thank you, thank you, good people, but the song isn't over yet'' when folks cheered during the instrumental bridge of ``Vanishing Point'') and some unforgettably dramatic ones, too (drummer Stephen Morris' thunderous introduction to ``True Faith''). It was a concert to savor, which was only fitting, because the band wouldn't return to our state for another 12 years.

Joy Division to record new material

New Order are working on new material for the long-awaited biopic of former Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. Director and celebrated rock photographer Anton Corbijn - most renowned for his work with U2 - has asked the legendary Manchester four-piece to contribute songs to the film 'Control'. The biopic, which is based on a book by Ian's widow Deborah, had been planned for a number of years, but the late singer's family were never happy with the proposals until earlier this year. Bassist Peter Hook told NME: "We were asked to do the soundtrack to the film which I thought was a fucking great idea, for Joy Division to do the music for a Joy Division film because we've never really done a soundtrack before. The soundtrack could include new stuff. Basically Anton wants to use certain songs by Joy Division so that each song becomes a video. Like the way the 'Atmosphere' video was filmed, he wants to write videos that appear in the film.
