Supergroup looking for singer

Members of New Order, Stone Roses and The Smiths search for vocalist Freebass - a supergroup consisting of New Order's Peter Hook, The Smiths' Andy Rourke and The Stone Roses Mani - are on the lookout for a singer. The band are looking to complete their line-up with a fresh face. "We want someone young with something to say. Someone new," Peter Hook told filer-mag.com. "I think the problem is that the three of us have such a pedigree of vocalist, that if we come out with someone that's not good we'll obviously be slated! You've got Ian Brown, bloody Bobby Gillespie, Ian Curtis, Bernard (Sumner) and Morrissey. Those are big shoes to fill, especially collectively," he said.

New Order perform school hall gig

helped a school celebrate a good Ofsted report by holding a lunchtime concert there. The band - two of whom are from Salford - played at the city's Oakwood High School after being inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame on Wednesday. The school, which caters for pupils with complex learning difficulties, was praised as "a very good school" by inspectors from Ofsted.

School of rock

Pop bands often treat fans to the odd intimate gig after hitting the big time, but New Order took the idea to extremes when they performed at a school assembly yesterday. Not that many of the 173 children at Oakwood High School, in Salford, had heard of a band whose biggest hit, Blue Monday, was released in 1983 when many of their parents were teenagers.

New Order help school celebrate success

When headteacher Janis Triska received an outstanding Ofsted report for Oakwood high school in Manchester, it took her a while to ponder how to celebrate best with her pupils. She put pen to paper and wrote to every famous person with local links she could think of inviting them to come and visit. This afternoon Manchester legends New Order took up that invitation and played a surprise gig for the school's pupils and the media. Bernard Sumner, the band's guitarist and singer, visited the school earlier this year and was so impressed he reportedly told Ms Triska he'd do whatever they wanted to help.

Legends turn out for Hall of Fame

Rock heroes Pink Floyd, The Who and New Order have been saluted by the music industry at a ceremony to induct them into the UK Music Hall of Fame. Posthumous places went to John Peel and Jimi Hendrix while Prime Minister Tony Blair led praise for the Eurythmics. But Ozzy Osbourne, whose band Black Sabbath were also honoured, stole the show with a bottom-baring performance. "That was a lot of fun," he said after mooning at the crowd which gave him a standing ovation at the London event. Wednesday's show was the second annual Hall of Fame ceremony, after the likes of The Beatles, Madonna and U2 were honoured last year.

New Order @ Apollo: 5 Stars

THERE are good weeks and there are great ones. For one of Manchester’s most esteemed outfits, this definitely falls into the latter category. On top of this triumphant first homecoming show in over three years; the group will join heavyweight luminaries such as Pink Floyd, The Who and The Kinks into the UK Music Hall Of Fame on Wednesday. And on last night’s evidence, New Order can punch their weight in any company. Timed to coincide with their new Singles compilation, a fervent sold out crowd got exactly what they clamoured for - a greatest hits set, which spanned their near 30-year career as both New Order and trailblazing Joy Division. Joy Division composition Ceremony got proceedings underway. Delivered with crackling intensity and Barney's trademark deadpan vocal, it acted as a perfect marker for what was to come. With bassist Peter Hook putting in a signature tour-de-force display - despite looking he would be more at home propping up a bar in an Alice Springs hostelry - and full-time axeman Phil Cunningham beefing up the guitar parts, it proved an assault on the senses that would have made Motörhead’s ears ring.

The Guardian's review of the Brixton Academy gig

Bernard Sumner is in a repentant mood. "We never used to care if our audiences had a good time," New Order's frontman admits. "But now we're older we've mellowed. We care." Traditionally, it is true, one approaches a New Order gig with some trepidation, anticipating mumbled in-jokes and tuning problems; maybe an onstage squabble; perhaps, as at this year's Glastonbury, the perverse omission of their best-loved song, Blue Monday. No other legendary band seems so compelled to deflate its own mystique.

Anton Corbijn talks about "Control"

"Control" — rock photographer/director Anton Corbijn's long-awaited paean to departed Joy Division singer Ian Curtis — has moved at a glacial development pace for the last two years, but the film finally looks like it's beginning to take shape. Corbijn flatly dismissed rumors that Jude Law would play the deceased singer ("Laughable," Corbijn said. "I read that in the tabloids and it's nonsense") but said Samantha Morton is attached to play Curtis' wife, Deborah. It's not the first time Corbijn has worked with Morton; the director cast her as the mermaid in U2's "Electrical Storm" video in 2002. While he wouldn't reveal who has been cast as Ian Curtis, the first-time feature-length director says he hopes to start shooting the film in early 2006. "I originally moved to England for this band. The subject matter is very close to my heart," he said. "There's no agenda on my end, apart from making this a fantastic movie. I'm not trying to become a big film director, I just want to make this one movie." ...
