NEW Order's England World Cup song, World In Motion is one of the most successful football songs in history. And yesterday bassist Peter Hook was in a studio in Chorlton, putting his stamp on a new football anthem for Manchester United to lift fans whose spirits have been dampened by the Malcolm Glazer takeover. "We can't change the business side of football but we can give the fans a voice," he tells me.

New Order show Keane how to make a scene

New Order turned back the clock last night with a rousing performance at the Glastonbury festival. The veteran Manchester band who successfully merged rock and dance music in the Eighties, proved that they were still a potent force. They began their set with two of their biggest hits, 'Crystal' and 'Regret', before delighting the crowd with a number of old favourites. New Order were created from the remains of Joy Division after singer Ian Curtis's suicide in 1980.

A New Order of festivals

It rained, it poured and it rocked! Yes, the O2 Wireless festival managed to achieve the impossible: It matched Glastonbury. Weather wise at least. A line-up of bands inluding the likes of Hard Fi, The Bravery and headliners New Order battled the elements. And Moby and Graham Coxon did their best to revive the somewhat dampened spirits of the 20,00 strong crowd.

U2 could have been us, says New Order's Hook

New Order bassist Peter Hook is jealous of super group U2 because he thinks their success was destined for his first band Joy Division. The English group disbanded in 1980 when their iconic front man Ian Curtis hanged himself aged only 23, but later reformed as New Order. He says: "I've always felt a bit jealous because I felt that they've done what we'd have done as Joy Division. I always felt that Bono picked up the mantle when Ian went." Hook's theory was confirmed when he saw an interview with the Irish singer: "I read an article and Bono admitted it. So I was right! It gave him the inspiration to do what he did."

U2 PAY TRIBUTE TO MANCHESTER

U2 have opened the UK leg of their ’VERTIGO’ world tour in MANCHESTER. Before ‘Miracle Drug’ the singer paid tribute to the city’s scientific legacy (the first computer was built in the city) and at the end of ‘With Or Without You’ he sang excerpts from Joy Division’s ‘Transmission’ and ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ - as bassist Peter Hook stood and watched.
