New Order to play Manc Aid?

SOME of the north west's biggest bands are assembling for a spectacular one-off gig to raise cash for Manchester's Christie hospital. The gig, planned for the M.E.N. Arena in January, will bring together artists such as New Order, The Charlatans and Badly Drawn Boy. The event is being organised by ex-Smiths' bassist Andy Rourke, who was so moved by seeing friends diagnosed with cancer that he got his music mates to lend a hand.

Bernard Sumner gives the secret to staying ageless.

For a guy turning 50 next year, Bernard Sumner is looking pretty darned good. Lazing around the restaurant of the posh New York hotel Soho Grand, the singer for techno-pop progenitors New Order is youthfully trim, decked out in a scholarly turtleneck sweater, brown corduroys and Velcroed Adidas, his tousled brown hair flecked with only the tiniest bit of gray at the temples. Sure, he’s been making music for 30 years, he’ll admit – but he still feels like the same Mancunian kid who almost singlehandedly launched the goth-rock movement with the late, lamented Joy Division (whose singer Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980, pushing Sumner to frontman status of the subsequent New Order). And the band’s latest hyper-kinetic outing, Waiting For The Sirens’ Call, feels boyishly energetic, especially on the signature bass-thumping single “Krafty,” which echoes the band’s classic “Blue Monday" / "Bizarre Love Triangle” work. How does this father of three stay so hip? Read on...

After midlife crisis, Billy Corgan revs up for more fun

BENEATH the floppy brim of his Cubs fisherman's cap, the driver's eyes glitter. He grabs the gear shift, lets the machine rumble in neutral for a couple of minutes, then puts the pedal to the metal and roars off through the quaint Chicago suburb where he resides. Children hear him coming, and hastily pull their Schwinns to the curb — the automobile is that loud. Billy Corgan squeals to a halt at his first red light and purrs with pride. "Soooo ... what do you think?" he asks rhetorically about the vintage'68 Mustang, all souped up and tricked out and ready to burn some mean Illinois rubber. It's all his. That's right, grins the ex-Smashing-Pumpkin/Zwan leader.
