NEW ORDER DITCH ARTWORK

British rockers NEW ORDER have been forced to ditch the artwork for their forthcoming album - over fears the disc would be offensive to victim's of the Indian Ocean tsunami. The BLUE MONDAY stars' latest offering, WAITING FOR THE SIREN'S CALL, originally featured an Asian woman standing beneath a waterfall. After last December's (04) horrific tidal wave, which left thousands of people dead in Asia, frontman BERNARD SUMMER and his bandmates switched the design to simple lettering against a white background.

Interview with Peter Hook in today's London Metro edition

Legs akimbo and driving riffs, bass slung so low it almost scrapes the ground, it could only be the God-like genius of New Order's Peter Hook. In the 28 years since they began as Joy Division, they've gone through love and hate and boom and bust as Factory's Tony Wilson spent their cash. But the band's appetite remains fierce, with a new single, Krafty, out today and an album on the way. There was a time when it looked like you'd never do more New Order. Now we've had two albums in a couple of years. What changed? It's funny - it's a bit like a family at Christmas. You don't see them for ages and then you get there and just click back into things. While we were apart, we went through some pretty bad stuff and we were finished. But we sorted out all the problems with what happened with Factory and the Hacienda and were suddenly free of it. It enabled us to look at things more calmly. We all met up when our manager, Rob Gretton, was sick - God rest his soul. When we got together, we realised we'd healed.

MOBY TALKS ABOUT NEW ORDER

In his tour diary, Moby talks about New Order today: New Order 3/5/2005 - London hi, not much to report. i'm just travelling around being a narcissist and talking about myself to nice journalists(and, the truth be told, the occasionally not-so-nice journalist. eh, it's not so bad). we did top of the pops tonight and new order were on, as well. and new order were on the 2nd time that i did top of the pops, in 1993. and they were also on when i did top of the pops one time in 2000, i think. and, as many of you know, i love new order, and i consider it one of my career highlights to have played a joy division song with them in california(this recording appears on the fantastic '24 hour party people' soundtrack). now it's late. i'd write more but i'm tired and my spartan hotel bed is calling to me. moby

'We are living legends'

UNLIKELY AS IT SOUNDS, JERRY LEE LEWIS almost appeared on New Order’s latest album. Sadly, we will never get to hear this musical meeting between 1980s electronic pop legends and a 1950s rock’n’roll legend, because Lewis told New Order he wouldn’t do it for less than £10,000. "We weren’t going to shell out that kind of cash for anyone, so we dumped the track and told his people to f*** off," explains New Order’s bassist, Peter Hook, with characteristic bluntness. It’s mid-February, and Hook, Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and new member Phil Cunningham (not the accordion-playing former Silly Wizard, but a guitarist who joined the band in 2003) have gathered to talk about their comeback. With or without Jerry Lee Lewis, Waiting for the Siren’s Call sounds like the strongest New Order album in years. Nothing quite as sublime as Temptation or Bizarre Love Triangle, but Working Overtime is a wonderful slab of accelerated rock, and both the title track and the first single, Krafty, are catchy pop tunes with sugary hooks.

OUT OF ORDER - PETER HOOK LOOKS BACK AT 25 YEARS OF ROCKING MAYHEM WITH NEW ORDER

They are undoubtedly one of the most influential and innovative UK groups of the past 25 years. Yet it seems that New Order are always destined to be haunted by their past. Their 2001 comeback album, Get Ready, coincided with the release of the film 24 Hour Party People which showed how the Manchester band was born – formed by the remaining members of Joy Division after frontman Ian Curtis hanged himself in May 1980. Now, their new single, Krafty, and album, Waiting For The Siren’s Call, coincide with plans for rock photographer Anton Corbijn to make an Ian Curtis biopic. “I was apprehensive at first,” admits New Order’s jovial bassist Peter Hook. “I didn’t know how Debbie (Curtis’s widow) would react, but I think the right people are involved.

NewOrderOnline review of Waiting For The Sirens' Call

Waiting For The Sirens Call - God-Like Genius? Okay, I'm biased perhaps, because I've been a New Order fan since their first gig, but most of us 'old timers' can also be hugely critical - check out some of the messages people have posted on NewOrderOnline.com about 'Republic', 'World In Motion', 'Get Ready' and various other tracks/albums they've had personal gripes about. Believe me, if I don't like something, I'll say so - I'm now resigned to joining the ranks of the 'Grumpy Old Men'. Some bands release singles where new listeners think, 'Now, THAT was a good song!' Other bands release tracks where the listeners think, 'Oh, that was definitely So and So...' New Order are a band that consistently make listeners think both. For me, one of the most interesting things about 'Waiting For The Sirens' Call (is the apostrohe in the right place?) is that most tracks somehow contain hints of previous New Order releases - the whole thing seems like a combination of 'Brotherhood', 'Technique' and 'Get Ready' and that's certainly not a bad thing - this album is like most of its predecessors - a couple of tracks stand out from the start, then, once you hit the 'repeat' button, you start to appreciate the subleties of the rest. I know it's an overdone cliche, but this album really is a 'grower'. It has all the promising sparks of the side projects, but gels them together as a whole. One of the most pleasing aspects of this album is that Phil Cunningham seems to have slotted in seamlessly - he'll never be Gillian (beacuase she's irreplaceable) but he's certain to be accepted as the fifth member of New Order - and very welcome he is too, judging by the guitar work here! He lends the album a similar feel to the 'Electronic' albums with Johnny Marr of The Smiths. He also adds some surprising guitar parts that lift what may have originally been fairly 'ordinary' ideas - by New Order standards - to a whole new level. I've already heard people criticising tra

New Order promos album with free ringtones

New Order take music mobileWarner Bros Records is teaming up with mobile marketing technology company Hypertag to promote the latest New Order album, offering fans free mobile content at HMV stores. Warner Bros will use Hypertag technology to promote the launch of "Waiting for the Sirens Call", the first studio album from New Order since 2001. The campaign will see Hypertag units installed into the New Order window displays of the HMV stores in London’s Oxford Street, and Market Steet in Manchester in the week running up to the launch of the album on 28 March. Consumers who interact with the tag will receive free music clips, ringtones or wallpaper, depending on their phone-capability. The campaign represents the first time such technology has been used by the music industry to promote an album release. New Order drummer, Stephen Morris, said: "Technology has always been a driving force for us and we want the promotion of our new album to reflect that." "The convergence of music and mobile is a hugely important development in the way that people consume music; being the first band to hand out free music clips direct to mobile means we are in the vanguard of this industry shift," Morris added. Hypertags are short-range wireless devices, which send information to mobile phones via infra-red or Bluetooth. A user activates the infra-red or Bluetooth on their phone, holds it up to the Hypertag and receives content such as vouchers, business cards, ringtones or games. Because Hypertags use short-range wireless technologies, rather than SMS, interactions are free to both brand and consumer.

New Order to play Hyde Park in June?

This is yet to be confirmed, but apparently the March 5th edition of Music Week contains a bit of useful information about New Order: New Order have confirmed a live date for London's Hyde Park on June 24th, the day before their Saturday night main stage slot at Glastonbury, where they are due to play second on the bill to expected headliners Coldplay New Order are to become the first act to utilise ground breaking interactive technology which allows consumers to sample music clips from interactive posters Warner Brothers has teamed up with HMV and Hypertag for the campaign behind the March 28 release of Waiting For The Sirens' Call A week prior to the album's release, window displays will be built into HMV's London Oxford St and Manchester flagship stores, which incorporate Hypertag technology transmitting data to mobile phones using infared and Bluetooth. Consumers who choose to interact with the technology will receive clips of tracks from the album as well as ringtones and wallpapers Warner Brothers domestic repertoire marketing director, Matt Thomas says, "We are always looking at new ways to promote artists and Hypertag's technology, together with HMV's participation, has created a unique way of getting exciting content into the hands of music fans Although it will be the first time the technology has been used to market a music release, it has previously been used as part of ad campaigns for Proctor & Gamble, O2 and Hewlett Packard. Again, this is NOT CONFIRMED.

Standing In The Shadow Of New Order

You can't get the question right. You're fumbling for the right words but all you can hear are the lyrics to "Age of Consent" over and over and over again in your brain ... It's almost too easy to toss the word "influential" in front of a band to hype up its place in the pop-music pantheon. Few acts deserve it, and the word is so damn relative. But the culture mill spits out thousands of new bands each year and inevitably even the most wanly creative gets the "influential" stamp if it can hang in there long enough. So, then — what to call a band at the forefront of almost two and a half decades of pop, rock, punk and electronic music? All of your favorite records of the past decade owe patronage to this band in some way. What's the right word? Pick an adjective that's neither insulting (don't want them to feel like dinosaurs) nor sycophantic (the NME chose "godlike geniuses"). You want them to get it that you get it. You want them to take your questions seriously. You don't want to blow smoke in their collective asses. And, you've only got 20 minutes of their time.
