New Album: Waiting For The Sirens Call

It has been confirmed to us by somebody from Teletext that New Order's publicist confirmed that the new album will be called Waiting For The Sirens Call. The first single will be released on March 14th 2005, but they still don't want to tell us which song it is. The band confirmed that Peter Saville is doing the artwork for the album. It's been rumoured that the reason why there is no apostrophe in "Sirens" is because the band couldn't agree where it should go, and Saville decided that there wouldn't be any. A promotional listening is scheduled in London next Tuesday for the press.

Woman vs. Machine

The track "The Real Thing" opens with a subtle evocation of Cyndi Lauper’s "Time After Time" before shifting gears to ’80s-style Brit synth-pop, summoning the ghosts of New Order, Pet Shop Boys and countless now-forgotten one-hit wonders who were once the staples of KROQ’s playlist. Easily one of L.A.M.B.’s best moments, "The Real Thing" is a potent snapshot of days gone by. It’s also the cut with the greatest cast of cool supporting players — producer: Nellee Hooper (Massive Attack, Björk); background vocals: Bernard Sumner (New Order); keyboards: Lisa Coleman (the Revolution, Wendy & Lisa); guitar: Wendy Melvoin (Wendy & Lisa, the Revolution); bass: Peter Hook (New Order). It’s a mercifully irony-free nod to the synth confections once sneered at by critics and fans of "real" rock music. The chilled outlines of those songs were warmed from the inside by chords of melancholy. They linger in the memories of former (and likely, still) misfits, lonely kids and freaks because the poignant, naked ache in the grooves — almost defiant for being so pointed — spoke not just to the bearer’s isolation but to a yearning for transcendence that almost couldn’t be spoken for fear it might never be realized or fully understood by anyone else.

When asked about the best thing he has heard recently, Sumner immediately said the Jacques Lu Cont remix of Gwen Stefani's single 'What You Waiting For?'. "I was really knocked out by it," he said: "And I know it sounds like New Order, but it's like seeing yourself in a mirror and someone's re-interpreted. That's the most recent thing I've heard that I've been impressed by. Loved it, absolutely loved it." Jacques Lu Cont is the founder of the group Les Rhytmes Digitales. On the official website of LRD, it is stated that despite his tender age, Lu Cont feels a particularly strong fascination with the synthpop explosion of the early 80's, alongside Arthur Baker, Mantronix and Todd Terry, he lists the Human League and New Order as his primary influences.

Order In

According to Jane Stevenson of the Toronto Star, the best song on Gwen Stefani's new solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. -- released this past Tuesday -- is appropriately called The Great Thing. (Editor's note: it's called The Real Thing) Although it was co-written with Linda Perry, it sounds like vintage New Order with Peter Hook on bass and Bernard Sumner on backing vocals. Sadly, Stefani never even got to even meet the '80s music legends. "That song was a song I had written with Linda, and the version that we did was like cheese-central," the No Doubt singer told the Sun recently. "But it was based on early Madonna, New Order-y, inspiration. It was my favourite song and when I played it for (producer Nellee Hooper) I was embarrassed. That's how nerdy I thought the song was. But I knew there was a great song in it. We ended up saying, 'Wow, we can't find a home for this, production-wise.' And we went through all these different loops, and then we ended up saying, 'Well, let's go to the source. Let's see if New Order will play.' And I'd been kind of stalking those guys 'cause I wanted to write with them, but they were doing their own record and we never hooked up. But then they said they would do it. They were going to play it and then give it back to us and they would work from there (England)."

Johm Leckie, New Order's new album's producer, is answering Poptones' question of doom this week, and here is what he had to say about New Order: How are the studio sessions for New Order coming along? They are going really well. They have done some of the tracks with me and Stephen Street and some by themselves. All-in-all about twenty tracks. What can I say about New Order? They are great. Same as they ever were. How did you get asked to produce New Order? They just asked me. They phoned me up and asked me and that was it. I went up to see them at Realworld studios.

Legendary radio DJ John Peel dies

Veteran BBC broadcaster John Peel has died at the age of 65, while on holiday in Peru. Peel, whose radio career spanned 40 years, was on a working holiday in the city of Cuzco with his wife Sheila when he suffered a heart attack. John Peel played a huge part in Joy Division and New Order's career, hence why the band participated in his radio aniversary 2 years ago and played Transmission for him. He will be missed. Bernard Sumner said it was a "dreadful shock". "If it wasn't for John Peel, there would be no Joy Division and no New Order. "He was one of the few people to give bands that played alternative music a chance to get heard, and he continued to be a champion of cutting-edge music throughout his life. "He will be genuinely missed by millions of music fans all over the world, both inside and outside the music industry. Our thoughts are with his family." Peter Hook from New Order has also been in touch and told us that without John he doesn't think they would have made it: "It was funny because he actually helped our career from nothing." "We didn't meet him for a long, long time and one of our warmest memories is that he was just as nervous as we were about meeting him and as soon as you got together it was like meeting old friends." "I mean the guy really was somebody who looked after you - he had a love of music and helped people who made music." "He was the only support we had in the beginning - they were very cold and lonely days, and I've got an awful feeling that there'll be a lot of very lonely, cold, days without him ." "It's a really sad moment - for music, for radio, for groups in general. I'd hate to be in a new group starting out without John Peel."

Moby's temptation

Moby's upcoming album, to be released in March 2005, will feature a cover of New Order's Temptation. Actually Moby didn't clearly state if was Temptation, but judge for yourself: "i don't often cover other peoples songs. but cd1 will contain a cover. and the hint is...i bought a 7" single in the early 80's and it was very difficult to determine the artist because the artwork looked like blue flecked linoleum on the 7" sleeve. eh, you'll figure it out soon enough. it's very pretty, if i do say so myself."
