New album ready for March?

All signs are pointing to a spring release of the upcoming New Order album, which means that a single could be issued by February. Rumour states Peter Hook himself, and several websites on the internet now lists March as the official release date for the yet untitled album. Don't take a vacation then though, it's New Order, so it'll be ready when it's be ready. Rumours also stated that one of their producer either left or have been fired, leaving the other one alone, but we don't know if it was Steven Street or John Leckie. On the other hand, if you can't wait to hear new music from New Order, their collaboration on Gwen Stefani's upcoming solo album will be available in November, we don't know which track it is now.

Hooky to play a DJ set in Glasgow September 26th 2004

Hooky's playing a two hour DJ set at our "Talkin' 'Bout An Education" night at Tom Tom Bar & Diner 207 Bath Street Glasgow. The tag line is "interesting people playing interesting records" and that pretty much sums it up (Pat Nevin and SSP leader Tommy Sheridan are booked in for Oct and Nov). It's a relaxed affair in a chilled out bar setting (no dancefloor) so it'll be a good opportunity to hear a bit of what floats Hookys boat musically. Be good to see some of you up in fabulous Glasvegas. The night runs from 8 til midnight and entry is free (just make sure you spend at the bar!).

Todd Eckert, Producer of the forthcoming Joy Division movie faces Poptones.co.uk's QUESTIONS OF DOOM

How are you going to be approaching the soundtracks to the Joy Division movie? There are likely going to be three soundtracks to the movie; the first will consist of original Joy Division music, the second will consist of incidental music for the film, hopefully from the members of New Order, though, they may not be recording as New Order, per se. And the third soundtrack will be a little bit different - we have asked people who we know and like to do a cover of a Joy Division song. So far, Mogwai and Black Rebel Motorcycle club have expressed some interest to this, along with a few others. But to maintain the intensity and anxiety of each Joy Division track we are giving the bands only a couple days to record their cover - we will arrange the studio time at comparatively inconvient times - like, if they have a day off in-between a tour - to provide an atmosphere of intensity. What has been the reaction of people to the fact that Americans are making the movie of the life of Ian

According to the Rolling Stone magazine, Gwen Stefani, No Doubt's lead vocalist, recruited several artists for her upcoming solo album, including Dr Dre, Martin Gore (Depeche Mode) and New Order. Gwen Stefani already did work with Moby, another New Order fan, and her husband covered In A Lonely Place with his band Bush. Gwen Stefani's yet untitled album is due for November 23rd 2004.

Poptones' interview with Tony Wilson

Tony Wilson faces Poptones.co.uk's QUESTION OF DOOM about his new record label Red Cellar, New Order, Joy Division, Grime, Raw-T, Hacienda, Happy Mondays, Factory, Twenty Four Hour Party People and the new projected film about Ian Curtis. Do you regret selling the Hacienda into flat conversions? No. The Hacienda before it ended was fifteen years of fucking financial nightmares. We lost millions on the place. When New Order were recording in Real World Studios I would be going down there every week to have a fucking crisis meeting about the Hacienda. It got to the point where Barney and I were in a meeting and I said ‘‘Barney, come one, it's been wonderful; if I there was a button that would make the Hacienda disappear - what would you do?'. And he said - ‘‘Show me the fucking button, Tony'. The Hacienda cost most of us a fortune. I agree that it is iconic and had its place for rock'n'roll and dance culture but everything has its time and place.

Jude's New Film Role Is No Real Joy

Jude Law is reported to have signed a deal to take on the role of tragic Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. The role is an unusual one for the British actor, who had recent big screen success in the American Civil War film Cold Mountain. The film has been backed by Hollywood and is apparently based on the book by Curtis' widow, Deborah. Curtis committed suicide in 1980 when he was only 23 years old. He is remembered as one of the UK's most troubled and talented musicians. The surviving members of the band went on to form New Order. Their classic hit Blue Monday was inspired by Curtis' suicide. Bass guitarist Peter Hook said Law was "not a bad choice". But he said he would have preferred to have seen Sean Harris reprise his role for the biopic, having played Curtis in 24 Hour Party People.

Jude Law to play Ian Curtis?

HOLLYWOOD heart-throb Jude Law is set for a return to Manchester - to play tragic Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis in a film about the celebrated singer. Producers of the biopic say they have lined up a "huge name" to play the lead role. And ex-Joy Division star Peter Hook says he believes 32-year-old Law, who was in Manchester to film a remake of Alfie last year, is the front-runner to play the role of Curtis.

He also ran Manchester's most notorious night spot - THE HACIENDA for over fifteen years… whilst still holding down his job as a Granada television reporter!! Tony’s autobiography – “24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE” was later made into a film of the same name with Alan Partridge actor Steve Coogan taking the lead role as Tony himself!!

Online article about Community

Paul Cockerton (ManchesterOnline) - THREE New Order fans from different parts of the world have paid tribute to their heroes by compiling a CD of cover versions – despite never having met each other. Mike Nguyen from the US, Alejo Parella from Argentina and Canadian Nicolas LeBlanc ran a competition on the website neworderonline.com, where bands could submit their own take on one of the Manchester legends’ tracks. The site’s users then voted for their favourites and eventually whittled the list down to 16 tracks, which include versions of famous New Order songs like Temptation and Thieves Like Us as well as Joy Division classics Heart And Soul and Transmission. Nguyen, Parella and LeBlanc have now collaborated online to master the tracks, design the sleeves and iron out legal issues ahead of the release of the CD, entitled Community, on June 1.

Rob Gretton memorial concert review

It's difficult to think of many band managers who would inspire a memorial. But Rob Gretton - late manager of Joy Division and New Order, and driving force behind Factory Records - was a one-off. Shy but fond of situationist pranks, he had a gut instinct that earned him Herculean levels of respect and, five years after his passing at age 46, he is being remembered with love.
