Liam Gallagher To Work With Peter Hook

Former New Order bassist Peter Hook has told Gigwise that he plans to work with Liam Gallagher and Ian Brown in the near future. Since he called time on New Order, Hook has been working alongside Primal Scream bass player Mani and former Smiths’ bassist Andy Rourke on a new project under the name, Freebass. Hook told Gigwise this week that The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess has just turned in the first vocal for the outfit and that the momentum behind the band is building quickly. Describing Burgess’ contribution as “fucking great,” he went on to reveals the impressive list of other artists who are scheduled to contribute guest vocals for the band. “We’ve got other people working on it,” Hook revealed. “Ian Brown is doing one for us, Howard Marks is doing one for us, Pete Wiley, Ian McCulloch, Liam Gallagher.” Explaining the trio’s motivation for forming Freebass, Hook explained: “We’ve just called friends in really which has been nice. “I think it’s always good to give something back and we’ve helped them in the past all of us, me and Mani have helped a lot of people and so has Andy Rourke, so it’s been nice to do it.” As we revealed exclusively on Monday (October 8th), Hook has ended all speculation that New Order would record new music, saying there was “no future” for the band.

Joy Division is multiplying

MORE than three decades have passed since Joy Division emerged from the cultural rubble of post-industrial Manchester, England to rechannel punk rock's sound and fury into something more sublime.

New day for New Order

The members of New Order have dismissed rumours that they plan to reform. Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Bernard Sumner attended a screening of the new Joy Division film Control - but not as a happy trio. "We've all been shouting at each other - now we're just arguing about who has custody of the children," joked Sumner. Hook recently admitted that he's working on a new venture called Freebase with Gary 'Mani' Mounfield (Stone Roses, Primal Scream) and Andy Rourke (the Smiths). Meanwhile, Sumner and Morris are putting together a project of their own. Sumner said: "I'm working on some stuff at the moment. Steve is gonna be involved with it, and it's a project called Bad Lieutenant."

Losing Control: America forgets Ian Curtis is rather R.I.P.

Shortlist magazine has revealed that distributors in the US, working the new Anton Corbijn film Control, asked if Joy Division could perform live at the US premiere. Says Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook (pictured): “Someone from the film’s US distributor’s office phoned up saying that the New York premiere was on 25 September and would Joy Division play? “I replied, ‘Well, the last I heard, the lead singer was dead but I’ll give them a ring and see if anything has changed'.” Control, which focuses on Joy Division singer Ian Curtis' life and eventual suicide on May 18 1980, is released in the UK on Friday (October 5); its soundtrack compilation, featuring David Bowie, The Sex Pistols and The Buzzcocks alongside the obvious two, is out now on Warner Music.

New Order to reform for Tony Wilson memorial gig?

The Manchester Evening News stated yesterday that there could be a possibile reunion to do a gig in the memory of Anthony Wilson. Quoting Peter Hook: "Hooky told the M.E.N: "It's very typical New Order to split up and then get back together again just like that isn't it?" Today, Peter Hook made a little correction to his interview: Can I just clear up this Manchester Evening News Article. In a conversation with Oliver Wilson about a tribute gig for his father, he asked me what the chances were of getting New Order to perform. I said, "Seeing as we have just split up, pretty slim.", he then said to me "If I could get the others to agree, would you do it?", I said "In honour of your father, I'd do anything." This means I would sell the popcorn, take the tickets, sweep up after, play bass in New Order/Joy Division/Crawling Chaos. I do wish that people would read things properly before mouthing off. I am definately going to have to learn to keep my big fat mouth shut (but I blame the bloody press!). And as Tony would say "Fuck em!"

DEAD SOUL - Eye Weekly Reviews of Control and Joy Division Documentary

By accepting the role of one of rock's most mythologized figures, Sam Riley had to live up to many people's expectations. Worse yet, some of those people were standing right in front of him. For the filming of the concert sequences in Control – Anton Corbijn's sensitive, stately drama about the short, tumultuous life of Ian Curtis, the Joy Division singer whose menacing music and gloomy mystique had an enormous influence on both the Manchester scene and the last three decades' worth of alt-rock – the sweaty extras in the audience were many of the band's biggest fans.

With New Order Kaput, Hook Presses On With Freebass

Peter Hook has no interest in being idle. The former New Order/Joy Division bassist is making progress with his new project Freebass, which gathers Smiths bassist Andy Rouke and Stone Roses counterpart Mani. "I've sat down with Mani and Rourke and we desperately want to play the festivals next year," Hook tells Billboard.com. "We're going to work our balls off up until Christmas to get this f*cking record finished."

Exclusive interview with Karl Bartos

KB#1 - 'Giving meaning to noise, sound becomes communication' Interview with Karl Bartos, 23 - 24 August 2007 Click here to read the german translation of this interview While listening to Electronic's 'Raise The Pressure', the thought struck me that if there was one man who would be able to shed light on so many aspects of modern music, especially electronic and multi-media, it would be the legendary Karl Bartos; guest member of 'Electronic', classically trained percussionist, keyboard player, guitarist, composer, solo artist, university lecturer and one-time member of another very famous, innovative band. As I'm not 'commissioned' to interview people for NOOL (Nic gives me the freedom to use my own initiative) I get the opportunity to interview people and bands that I like, as well as a few heroes. It's a really cool way of working, maybe too 'Factory-like' sometimes, but people have been very kind and patient in giving up their time for us. I wondered if this time I had decided to approach someone who was too big a star and that the response to my request would be, 'Sorry, he's too busy.' That wasn't the case. During two relaxed afternoons, he was good enough to give up his time. I had the very genuine pleasure of chatting with one of the most genuine, interesting and forthright people I've interviewed. Yes, it really was a chat. He's pretty damn clever too. From the very start, he'd got me sussed…

Review: Confusion

David Nolan’s first book, ‘I Swear I Was There – The Gig That Changed The World’ was very well received by both the music press and also music fans everywhere. I don’t doubt that his latest book, ‘Confusion’ will be regarded as essential reading matter for any fan of the Manchester music scene.

Exclusive interview with David Nolan

DAVID NOLAN HINTS CHRIS NASH MAY BE A 'TWAT' I first had contact with David Nolan via the networking site, 'MySpace'. We exchanged a few messages and a couple of weeks ago, his publisher sent me a review copy of his latest book, 'Confusion: Joy Division, Electronic And New Order Versus The World'. David kindly agreed to do a 'Q&A' interview for NewOrderOnline and his answers are detailed below. He's a very approachable gent, with a rather cheeky sense of humour. Surrounded by his children, who are on their school holidays, he still managed to reply to our questions and as anyone who has children will confirm, that shows perseverance and strength of character! What is the 'Twat' reference? Well, read the interview, but this is the basis - 'The trouble is that the first person to suggest a Wilson book now looks like a twat.' Okay, I'll stick my hand up, but if a biography of Tony Wilson is written, maybe one of the better people to write it would be David Nolan. Hopefully you'll enjoy both the questions and answers and get a better mental picture of the author of 'Confusion'. Control Soundtrack listing revealed

Details of the Control OST have now emerged. The album, scheduled for release on 1st October, includes three brand new tracks from New Order, a cover of Transmission by the cast (presume that's the JD actors) and The Killers' cover of Shadowplay. The New Order tracks are titled, 'Exit', 'Get Out' and 'Hypnosis'. It would be cynical to speculate that Bernard wrote these for Hooky . Full Tracklisting: 1) Exit - New Order 2) What Goes On - The Velvet Underground 3) Shadowplay (Joy Division cover) - The Killers 4) Boredom (Live) - The Buzzcocks 5) Dead Souls - Joy Division 6) She Was Naked - Supersister 7) Sister Midnight - Iggy Pop 8) Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division 9) Problems (Live) - Sex Pistols 10) Hypnosis - New Order 11) Drive In Saturday - David Bowie 12) Evidently Chickentown - John Cooper Clarke 13) 2H.B. - Roxy Music 14) Transmission (Cast Version) - Joy Division 15) Autobahn - Kraftwerk 16) Atmosphere - Joy Division 17) Warszawa - David Bowie 18) Get Out - New Order The three New Order tracks are the instrumental tracks used in the last third of the film. They consist of Hooky's trademark bass lines, some sparse drumming from Morris, and Sumner playing what sounds like a flute sound on a mellotron - not particularly in the style of Joy Division, as was previously mooted.

Bernard Sumner pays tribute to Tony Wilson

Bernard Sumner, the guitarist with Joy Division and lead singer with New Order, the band that succeeded it, got married a month ago and Wilson, despite being so ill, attended the wedding. It was the last time Sumner saw the man who he describes as “an eternal teenager”, “an incredible optimist” and a massive creative inspiration. Asked what he would like to say to Wilson, he said: “I’d like to say thank you for completely changing my life and allowing me the opportunity to haul myself out of my working-class background. Thanks for allowing Joy Division and New Order to develop in their own way and letting us retain our individuality. And to do it all in Manchester.” It was Wilson’s relaxed management style that allowed the bands not to be shackled by corporate demands. “There was a fun side to Tony’s flippancy with money,” said Sumner. “We didn’t have a record company breathing down our necks for hit singles. It allowed us to express ourselves in our own way.” He said the love-hate relationship that some people in Manchester had with Wilson was just the Mancunian way. “People would like to say they hated him, but they loved him really. It’s Manchester humour: you greet people you like with an insult and you expect one back.”

David Potts release new single featuring Peter Hook

Mancunian songsmith David Potts is back with his second solo single. The brand new double A-side features the cheeky, melodic, hook-filled 'Monkey In The Rain', and it's brother 'Roll Up!' which is lifted from his recent debut album features ex-cohort Peter Hook (New Order) on bass. Both uplifting, both energetic, both foot-tapping, and both head-nodding psychedelic tinged guitar pop! This single follows the recent success of his album ‘Coming Up For Air’ and the stomping debut single 'I'm The Greatest' – the reviews speak for themselves.

Exclusive interview with David Potts and Paul Kehoe

We interviewed David Potts and his collaborator, Paul Kehoe, both from Revenge, Monaco and now playing under the banner 'David Potts'. With an album released at the start of this year and a double 'A' sided single released this month, we thought we'd catch up with them, see how things were going and what's been happening so far. They both gave their time to appear at NOOL's 'Blue Saturday', better known as 'NewOrderOnline Day' in late 2006. We started off by putting David 'Pottsy' Potts under the spotlight…
