Review: Coming Up For Air

With the upcoming release of David Potts’ new double A-sided digital single, ‘Monkey In The Rain/Roll Up!’ (also includes two extra tracks) I thought I’d have a few listens to his first solo album under his own name, released around six months ago at the end of January 2007 and give it a 'retrospective' review.

Peter Hook leads tributes to Tony Wilson

Peter Hook has paid tribute to Tony Wilson, who died yesterday, saying "my heart is broken". The New Order and Joy Division bass player likened the passing of the Factory Records founder to the death of his father. Posting on his MySpace blog from Japan, Hook wrote: "It's a very, very, very sad day. I feel very lost out here in Japan. It's like my father dying all over again. I'm devastated." "I'll be going back to England as soon as possible to pick up the pieces. My heart goes out to Yvette, Oliver, Hilary and Isabelle. I'm thinking of you all, my heart is broken. "Say hello to Rob, Ian and Martin for me please Tony. Rest in peace. God bless." Wilson signed Joy Division to his Factory Records label, and together they opened Manchester's legendary Hacienda nightclub. Wilson died yesterday in Manchester, from a heart attack following complications from cancer.

New Order pay tribute to Tony Wilson

New Order and Joy Division's Stephen Morris has paid tribute to Tony Wilson who died tonight (August 10). The drummer's bands were both signed by the legend's Factory Records and he in turn became an important guiding force on their career. "There would be no Joy Division or New Order without Tony," Morris told Newsnight. "He really believed in us and he was smart enough to start a label and put our records out." He added: "He was so enthusiastic, he was always 'we'll just go ahead an do it and figure out why we did it afterwards. It was his sense of enthusiasm that was so important. You could have an argument with Tony and walk out hating him and the next time you saw him it was all forgotten. You just love him." From signing the likes of Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays, to being a general support of exciting an innovative music, Wilson established himself as a true indie hero.

Bernard Sumner Says New Order ‘Mate Peter Hook “Needs to Chill Out”

From Rolling Stone magazine. Last week New Order bassist Peter Hook shocked fans by lashing out at his bandmates on his blog and announcing the group had broken up (in something resembling Courtney Love speak): “You are no more new order than i am! You may have two thirds but dont assume you have the rights to do anything NEW ordery cos you dont ive still got a third!” New Order guitarist Bernard Sumner — who hasn’t seen Hook since the group toured South America last November (NOOL Editorial Note: Not true, they were in Cannes at the premiere of Control) — was as surprised as anyone who read the post. “I find it very distasteful for him to do that after all this time,” he says, checking in by telephone from England. “He should have had a meeting with us. I’m not having someone tell me that we’ve split up without consulting me first. I think that’s very arrogant.” Sumner is unsure whether he and drummer Stephen Morris will continue on as New Order without Hook. “We haven’t got any plans to make any music under the guise as New Order,” Sumner says. “I’ve working on two other projects at the moment so I’m kind of busy for the next couple of years anyway.” And Hook, he says, needs to take five: “I think that Hooky just needs to chill out a little bit and relax.” Sumner says he has no plans to reach out to his blogging bandmate to clear everything up. “He’s the guy who with the problem, so he should approach us,” he says. “We haven’t got a problem. I just don’t think he likes me, so what can you do?”

Robbie Williams with Freebass?

Robbie Williams has approached former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke to work on his solo project. Rourke revealed that the singer had got in touch to join in with his new project Freebass, the band he shares with Primal Scream's Mani and New Order's Peter Hook. Musicians also pencilled into to work with the band include Ian Brown and Tim Burgess from The Charlatans. Rourke revealed the Williams collaboration during a Q&A session about the new Smiths documentary 'Inside The Smiths' with band drummer Mike Joyce in London yesterday (July 19). When asked about the possibility of a Smiths reunion Rourke optimistically offered: "Never say never," despite the duo admitting that they had not spoken to Morrissey since the royalty court case in the early 1990s.

Stars buy cancer drug for Tony

SHOWBIZ stars are paying for music legend Anthony Wilson to have £3,500-a-month cancer treatment - after the NHS refused to fund it. The broadcaster - known as Mr Manchester - is taking a controversial new drug after chemotherapy failed to beat the disease. He was diagnosed with cancer last year and had a kidney removed. Doctors at the Christie Hospital recommended Sutent, a drug which has doubled the life expectancy of some patients in trials. But the Manchester NHS Primary Care Trust has refused to pay for the treatment. It says there is not enough `demonstrable evidence to support the use of this drug in treating kidney cancer'.

Album Review: Community 2 - A NewOrderOnline Tribute

Fans of New Order and Joy Division are not only rabid, but inventive. They make biopics about Ian Curtis. They make (the focus of this review) cover albums. And they do it well. On Community 2: A NewOrderOnline Tribute (a project of the NO/JD fan club, www.neworderonline.com"), fans enlisted in a competition by submitting their covers of various New Order songs to be handpicked by Peter Hook himself for inclusion on the album. Who better than Hooky to decide who covers his work the best, right?

Manchester legend Wilson unbowed by tough times

LONDON (Billboard) - Tony Wilson is difficult to pigeonhole. The veteran British music man -- whose Factory Records spearheaded the career of Joy Division, among other bands -- is a raconteur, an A&R exec, a scene-builder, a businessman and a celebrity. Wilson can now add "fighter" to his list. The man whose unconventional career was the subject of 2002 feature film "24 Hour Party People" is battling cancer. But the illness hasn't curbed his zest for music and his commitment to bringing new artists to the fore.

The Diary: A New Order

Dianne Bourne takes a look at what's going on around Manchester. NO sooner had it been revealed they'd split up, than New Order were back together - for the world premiere of Ian Curtis biopic Control at the Cannes Film Festival. "It was a bit tetchy, to say the least," reveals bassist Peter Hook. “It was the first time we’d met up since we split up. “I mean the thing is, we’re 50 years old, not 15, if things don’t work out, or someone’s not happy you get on with it, you have to." But the success of the Anton Corbijn-directed movie, which follows the life and tragic death of Joy Division frontman Ian, is providing comfort to Hooky.

Ian Curtis biopic wins prizes at Cannes Film Festival

The new Ian Curtis biopic 'Control' has won a host of acclaim and prizes at this year's Cannes Film Festival, including Best European Film. Anton Corbijn's movie about the Joy Division singer, who committed suicide at the height of the band's powers in 1980, was shown outside the main Palme d'Or competition. However, 'Control' was the big winner of the Director's Fortnight section, winning the CICAE Art & Essai prize for Best Film. The movie also claimed the 'Regards Jeunes' award for best first or second directed feature film and the Europa Cinemas Label prize for Best European Film in the sidebar. The Europa Cinemas jury said about the film: "This is a very impressive and assured debut from a renowned photographer, but he never allows the look of the film, beautiful though it is, to detract from the powerful story and character development. "The performances are all excellent, not just the leading characters. We feel that this is a film that will strike a real chord with audiences around Europe, and not just with music lovers." The movie is an adaptation of Curtis widow Deborah's memoirs of her life with the singer, 'Touching From A Distance'. In the movie, she is played by Oscar-nominated actress Samantha Morton, while Curtis is played by relative unknown Sam Riley. 'Control' is due for release later this year.

Annick Honoré - "Truth hits everybody"

Side-Line.com has published the full Annick Honoré interview on their website due to popular demand, here is an excerpt: On May 18th, it was 25 years ago that Ian Curtis, the enigmatic frontman of cult act Joy Division committed suicide. Curtis died at age 23 in 1980, shortly before he was due to tour the US. The BBC spent a whole day broadcasting songs, tributes and many more while press worldwide commemorated this rather sad anniversary. And it isn't over yet, for the next several months up until next year we will see several books released on Curtis, at least one biopic and several tribute CDs of which a few have already reached the market. As far as the CDs are concerned, one can say that they are what they are, copies, the one paler than the other, of what was and still is revolutionary, even now as not many bands have succeeded in reaching a similar creative standard and level as Joy Division did back then and this with only two albums produced. (By Bernard Van Isacker - 2005) Less predictable though are the efforts by film directors and related to have their go on Curtis' life. Whereas "24 hour party people" described the rise and fall of Factory Records, the projects now focused on the man himself and not always in such a good way as some might think... In the end 2 projects saw the light of day in early 2004, but only one made it through. British unknown makes big impression at Cannes in biopic of Joy Division star

A small film about a short-lived rock star is making a big splash at Cannes. "Control" — the story of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, who committed suicide at 23 — marks the movie-directing debut of rock photographer Anton Corbijn and features a star-making central performance from British unknown Sam Riley. The ingredients are familiar — a soupcon of sex, a dash of drugs, a blast of rock'n'roll. But "Control," which opened the film festival's Directors' Fortnight sidebar on Thursday, is far from a standard showbiz biopic. Shot in stark black-and-white and set in gritty, unglamorous 1970s England, it re-creates the life of a singer who died unhappy and almost unknown but has secured a place in rock mythology.

Cannes applauds Joy Division biopic

There was a palpable buzz on the Croisette today as Control, Anton Corbijn's film about Joy Division, was given its premiere - to immediate critical acclaim. The young British actors who play the band members are all unknown names. A star seems to have been born in Sam Riley, who plays Ian Curtis - pulling off, audiences agreed, an uncannily accurate and charismatic portrayal. He had been working in a warehouse in Leeds before being chosen to play Curtis. The only "name" in the film is Samantha Morton, who plays Curtis's wife Deborah.

Sam: 'It's a bit of a daydream'

Newcomer Sam Riley has found himself the centre of attention at the Cannes Film Festival, where his film Control is showing. The 27-year-old, who plays Joy Division star Ian Curtis, is also in a band - as the singer of rock group 10,000 Things, which spent four years with the Polydor record label but, he admits, never "troubled the charts".
