Briton causes sensation in Cannes

A 27-year-old former retail warehouse worker is causing a sensation in Cannes for his first film lead role as the lead singer of iconic Manchester band Joy Division in a low-budget British movie which failed to secure UK public investment. Dutch director Anton Corbijn had to pour his own cash into the film Control to ensure its survival.

Bright young Brit shines in Joy Division biopic

A failed rock star who until recently was packing shirts in a warehouse has been hailed as one of Britain’s brightest new acting talents at the Cannes Film Festival. Sam Riley, 27, who admits that his band, Ten Thousand Things, "never troubled" the pop charts, has been lauded for his performance in Control, the British film about the late frontman of seminal 1970s group Joy Division. Critics have described his portrayal of troubled singer Ian Curtis, who committed suicide on the eve of the band's first American tour, as "spectacular" and "outstanding".

Critics applaud Joy Division film

A British film about the life and death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, starring a first-time actor, has earned a rapturous reception in Cannes. Unknown Sam Riley said he was "working in a warehouse in Leeds folding shirts" when he was cast to star in Control. Debut film director Anton Corbijn said the newcomer had brought "an innocence and freshness that I was hoping for but never thought I would find". The movie opened the 60th Cannes Film Festival's Director's Fortnight.

New Order did not split

A source close to the band told NewOrderOnline that the news about the split is false, New Order still exists despite what New Order's bassist said. Peter Hook can leave the band, but this doesn't mean the end of New Order. We remind you that the claims of New Order's split originated from Peter Hook's blog on MySpace, apparently he didn't warn the rest of the band that were surprised about this news. Joy division were Peter and Bernard's band initially, and becoming New order the band is truly democratif and have been treated as such,. They are still a band but obviously things are being made increasingly difficult as Peter makes claims of a split. The band is right now in Cannes for the premier of the biopic Control about the life of Ian Curtis.

New Order split up - this time for good?

New Order have split up, according to bassist Peter Hook. As previously reported the band denied they were splitting earlier this year despite drummer Stephen Morris being quoted as saying: "We should stop for a while." Speaking about his involvement in Perry Farrell's Satellite Party, Peter Hook told Xfm that the band have broken up. He said: "I spoke to Perry, and he asked me to play bass, as he'd heard about New Order splitting up. Well yeah, me and Bernard (Sumner) aren't working together." When asked if the split was permanent, he added: "Bernard went off for a break with Electronic, but that was different. But it's like the boy who cried wolf this time." Surprise last night at the Manchester Hard Rock Café where David Potts and Peter Hook did a benefit concert, they indeed played 5 songs, 2 from New Order, 2 from Monaco and one from Joy Division. Guests were Rowetta, who provided vocals on Insight, and our very own Jack, Hooky's son on bass. The setlist was: Insight Age of Consent Sunrise Shine What Do You Want From Me? Insight (Encore)

Peter Hook and David Potts working together

David Potts and Peter Hook have confirmed that they'll be sharing a stage for the first time in 7 years for the Hard Rock Café 'March on Stage' event in Manchester on Wednesday 21st March in aid of the Nordorff-Robbins Music Therapy charity. Other music industry patrons of Nordorff-Robbins - who provide UK-wide music therapy sessions for 30,000 people a year - include David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Sting and Pink Floyd. As post-Revenge duo Monaco, 'Hooky' and 'Pottsy' sold a million albums worldwide in the late '90s and created the chart hit 'What Do You Want From Me' combining instantly memorable pop sha-la-las with the trademark New Order bass sound. Monaco split in 2000 with Hook re-joining New Order and travelling the world as a superstar DJ. Potts went on to write and produce, initially as Ram and culminating in a solo album release 'Coming Up For Air' in January of this year. So could Monaco’s old sparring partners be on the verge of reforming? “Very unlikely” says Hook, “I thought I’d got rid of Pottsy and he thought he’d got rid of me but a one-off like this for Nordorff-Robbins is worth doing”. Potts agrees: “We’ll let you know if it was a good idea afterwards!”

New Order's Hook Drafts Stars For New Project

New Order bassist Peter Hook is gathering some famous friends to collaborate on his new project, Freebase. The trio -- which comprises Hook, former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and former Stone Roses/current Primal Scream bassist Mani -- will turn the mic over to some of Manchester, England's best-known frontmen. "We've been working with some great singers. (The Charlatans') Tim Burgess has done a vocal for us. (Oasis') Liam Gallagher, I believe, is doing one , (Stone Roses') Ian Brown and (Primal Scream's) Bobby Gillespie," Hook tells Billboard.com. "We're going to get them up on stage as well. It's nice that Mani and I can call in a few favors. We were going to call it 'Fourbase,' but it didn't have the same ring to it," he laughs. Hook spoke to Billboard after the recent NME Awards in London, where he presented the best British band trophy to Muse. Although the Freebase project is not yet signed to a label, Hook confesses, "It's great to write again. I'm really excited about it." Hook, however, remains coy on prospects of a follow-up to New Order's most recent album, "Waiting for the Siren's Call." "Its possible," he says, "But I'm not too sure the climate is great for at the moment." Hook and former Revenge and Monaco bandmate David Potts will perform March 21 under the guise of "Hooky" and "Pottsy" at Manchester's Hard Rock Cafe. It will be the first time the pair have shared a stage in seven years. Proceeds will benefit the Nordoff-Robbins music therapy charity.

Anthony Wilson fighting cancer

Anthony Wilson, the music mogul behind some of Manchester's most successful bands, has been diagnosed with cancer. The Salford-born entrepreneur, who managed New Order, Joy Division and the Happy Mondays, underwent emergency surgery last month to remove a kidney. The 56-year-old, who launched Factory records and the Hacienda nightclub, is due to start a chemotherapy course at Manchester's Christie Hospital. The disease was found during a routine visit to the doctor. Two minutes into his check-up the doctor identified that something was "seriously wrong" with his right lung. After having the lung drained a scan revealed that his right kidney was "completely consumed" by cancer. It was then removed at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and he is now set for two five-day treatments at the Christie. Mr Wilson said: "It was a bit of a surprise to find out I had cancer because there is no family history. "All my family tend to have heart attacks in the middle of the night aged in their 70s, 80s and 90s. "I wasn't too upset when I was told the news. I just think you have to go with it and I see it as another step in life's adventure." 'Madchester' founder Mr Wilson reserved particular praise for the staff who treated him after his diagnosis. "The sheer quality of the care provided to me by the nursing staff and doctors has been fantastic," he said. "It's funny that everyone has a moan about the NHS except for people who actually use it." Mr Wilson, who is a presenter on BBC Radio Manchester, rose to fame after he co-founded Factory Records and the Hacienda nightclub which was famously known as the birthplace of the "Madchester" music phenomenon. The semi-fictional story of both the music label and the historic club was told in the 2002 film, 24 Hour Party People. --- NewOrderOnline would like to wish him the best of luck in the most important fight of his life. Join our discussion on the topic to express your good wishes to Anthony, we will try to submit them to the proper people.

David Potts releases "Coming Up For Air"

Mancunian songsmith David Potts aka ‘Pottsy’ is back with his first solo album, a highly energetic, hits-packed offering ‘Coming Up For Air’ in January 2007. Those who remember Pottsy from Monaco and RAM are about to have their patience rewarded. This album has been a journey which has mirrored Pottsy’s own. “I had to put some distance personally and musically between Monaco and myself.” says Potts, “I’m proud of what we achieved but it’s been a mixed blessing. Reactions to the music now make me realise that I’m out of that shadow for good. ‘Coming Up For Air’ is about just that, being able to breathe again”. This is the theme of an album which charts a very personal fight to be recognised as an individual talent. So has he arrived? “It’s made me connect with the music I love and want to make” says Pottsy. “Setting up my own label was an important step, a statement I suppose that I no longer needed a mainstream music business to get out there.” Each track stands proud and shows off Pottsy’s diverse influences from The Who to The Kinks, and The Beatles to The Jam. Essentially ‘Coming Up for Air’ demonstrates Potts’ abilities as a first class songwriter in a time when they are few and far between. You can buy the album online: Amazon (UK) Amazon (USA)

The Killers have covered the 1979 Joy Division song “Shadowplay” for the soundtrack to the forthcoming biopic, “Control”, about the life of the band's front man Ian Curtis. As previously reported, New Order have recorded the incidental music for the movie, and are also thought to be re-recording a number of Joy Division tracks. Directed by Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn, Control is set to open in UK cinemas in March, 2 years after its American producers Orian Williams and Tom Eckhert first contacted Mojo to discuss their new project. Eckert has spoken about their lengthy effort to get the film off the ground, having optioned the rights to 'Touching from a distance' in the late 90's. ''I don't think there are many really great stories out there.'' said Todd. ''But this is one of them.''

New Order: We're not splitting up

RUMOURS of Mancunian pop legends New Order's demise may be somewhat premature, I am reliably informed. While numerous websites have been screaming out loud that the band has decided to call it a day I have it on good authority that the band are actually about to embark on one of their busiest years for many a moon. "It's the first I've heard of it," drummer Stephen Morris declares when I asked him about the split stories. "We've got an album to finish and a movie coming out this year."

Hooky confirms for cancer gig

NEW Order's Peter Hook is the first artist confirmed for the Versus Cancer charity gig. He played at last year's show alongside Doves, Badly Drawn Boy and Elbow. More of the line-up for the March 30 show will be revealed over the next week before tickets go on sale on Friday. Ex-Smiths' bassist Andy Rourke was inspired to arrange last year's gig after his manager's sister, Nina Rehman, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in October 2004. She lost her battle with the disease in August and it's hoped this year's gig - being organised in her name - will raise £1m. Finale Peter, known as Hooky, said: "I remember being on stage for the finale last year, singing a Happy Monday's track with an array of top artists. You wouldn't see that anywhere else and I couldn't help but smile at how amazing it was." Money raised last year helped to fund clinical trials at the Christie Hospital, in Withington, and a Manchester-based awareness campaign highlighting the importance of checking for signs of the disease.

Top bands in £1m cancer gig

SOME of the north west's biggest bands are preparing for a charity gig to raise £1m to fight cancer. The line-up for the second Versus Cancer show is a closely guarded secret, but organisers promise it will match the standard of last year's set, which included New Order, Doves, Badly Drawn Boy and Elbow. The M.E.N. will be revealing some of the acts taking part over the next fortnight. Advertisement your story continues below Ex-Smiths' bassist Andy Rourke was inspired to arrange it in aid of Manchester's famous cancer hospital, The Christie, after two close friends were diagnosed with the disease. The highlight of last year's show was his performance with former bandmate Johnny Marr for the first time in almost 20 years. Andy was overwhelmed by the support he received from fellow musicians and the response from the public.

Control: Premiere in February 2007

According to a german site, the movie about Ian Curtis, Control, directed by world-famous photographer Anton Corbijn will be in Berlin on Feburary 2007 at the Berlinale movie festival, and the movie will be in theatre in April.

New Order OnLine is 6 years old!

Today mark the milestone of the 6th year of NewOrderOnline.com, which opened on December 1st, 2000. Well, this site would have died a long time ago without the people who are listed on this page and those who are not listed and who contributed. In the last 2 years, the help of WenOrder has been appreciated a lot, especially for the design, the shop (which pays the bills as well as the Google ads and help the site to remain free)... Thanks to the moderators team who do a decent job despite some people hating them with passion. And of course, thanks to Bernard, Peter, Steve and Phil... as well as Andy Robinson and Rebecca Boulton, who are giving us a lot of support despite what some people think... What to expect for next year? Seems the only main issue will be the release of Control, and its soundtrack... And well, thanks to Sebastien, without him it would still be the same old static website ;) And thanks to the 14,795,933 visitors! :thumb:

The end of New Order?

Bassist Peter Hook confirmed what -until saturday- his partner Stephen Morris told Página/12 before the Personal Fest show. They say nowadays they look as the "old guys of the neighbourhood”. “This might be our last concert ever.” Bassist Peter Hook talks and the show he mentions is the one New Order did last saturday night in Buenos Aires closing Personal Fest´s main stage. The interview in which Hook confirmed their split -at least temporary- to Página/12 it was given right before the band´s gig, in one of the comfortable dressing rooms in club Ciudad de Buenos Aires, where the festival took place. But before talking to the bassist it was drummer Stephen Morris who throwed the first stone when we reminded him that in 2007 it would be the 30th anniversary of the band, first as Joy Division and then -after Ian Curtis suicide in March 18th 1980- as main characters of the crossover between dance and new wave New Order. The drummer said they didn´t think about anything special for the anniversary: "We´re not very good in making plans. The good thing about when we started in Factory (their first label, which is shown in the 24Hour Party People movie) was that you didn´t have to plan what you were going to do. You could write a song and say "this could be a good single" and then release it two weeks later. You can´t do that anymore, you have to write and record an album... But the truth is that we´re not good planning anything, so i couldn´t say what are we going to do do next year".
