Radio revives the video star

It must be the longest commercial break in history. After 19 years off the air, the iconic music show The Tube is back. The new incarnation captures all of the anarchic innovation of the original television show, which ran for five seasons between 1982 and 1987, but it is not on TV - it is a radio show to be streamed on the internet at channel4radio.com. Bands on the first show, which goes online on November 3, include New Order, Camera Obscura, Clinic and Eskimo, playing live in front of an audience at Blueprint Studios in Manchester. The producers, north-west-based independent UK1FM, have pulled off something of a coup in persuading Freebass, the collective name for Hooky, Mani and Andy Rourke of New Order, Primal Scream and the Smiths, respectively, to compose the show's signature tune, which, just to complete the name-dropping, has been remixed by the Utah Saints. Such is the affection for The Tube that Michael Stipe of REM also pops up in a phone interview with Hacienda and Factory Records guru Tony Wilson.

Joy Division on THE GOTHIC BOX

Long before its black velvet and pale skin fashions crept into American malls, Goth music represented an underground movement led by fans who favored songs that tapped into the antisocial energy of punk but celebrated dark introspection, tempestuous atmospherics and visual panache. Rhino brings together influential bands that rarely or never participate in Gothic music compilations to create a fascinating cross-section of all matters pertaining to Goth with A Life Less Lived: The Gothic Box. This four-disc boxed set-three CDs and one DVD-will be available September 19.

Electronic: The 24-hour party people

Trawl certain US-based websites, and you will routinely see Electronic described as "one of England's supergroups". But while the duo of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and New Order frontman Bernard Sumner would collaborate with The Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant, among others, it was nothing so crass or premeditated. Talk with Sumner and Marr today, and you are reminded that Electronic, formed in Manchester in 1987, was a happenstance, feel-good, deliberately on-off project that let them recuperate from the less savoury aspects of band politics chez New Order and The Smiths.

Peter Hook to write a book on the Haçienda

New Order bassist PETER HOOK is working on a book chronicling the decadent heyday of iconic Manchester, Northern England, venue The Hacienda. The club was run by the BLUE MONDAY stars alongside Factory Records pop mogul TONY WILSON - and throughout the 1980s it became a notorious mecca for music fans, as portrayed in 2002 movie 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE. Hook, whose upcoming work is provisionally titled HOW NOT TO RUN A CLUB, says, "I realised I'd bored my friends for years with tales from The Hacienda so now I thought I'd bore the general public with it. "But once I started to get into the writing I realised what a huge endeavour it was, and that I was going to have to work on it properly to do it justice. "To us it's a tale of woe, but The Hacienda did change the world of clubbing. Even though it took me to the edge and it took Factory Records to the edge. The stories are legion and legendary."

Memories of tragic Ian

THE filming of Control – the movie of Joy Division’s tragic frontman Ian Curtis – has left his former band mates with some mixed emotions. After Ian’s suicide in 1980, aged just 23, Joy Division famously went on to become New Order – and the band have given their full backing to the movie of Ian’s life currently being made by renowned music director Anton Corbijn. But when cast and crew invited the band to come and watch the filming, on location in Ian’s hometown of Macclesfield, it left them in a bit of a dilemma.
