Plastic Pink Flamingos - The Politics of Camp and the Rhetoric of John Waters Camp is most commonly defined as both a way of viewing dominant culture and a way of enacting a sense of self in a hostile cultural climate. Often associated with (but not limited to) queer practices, camp comes to be defined through its association with play, performance, nostalgia, and cheapness. Film director John Waters, most well known for films such as Pink Flamingo, Hairspray, Serial Mom, and Pecker, works at building cultures of camp within his filmic representations of whiteness; we will use Waters as a starting off point for our examination of the practice of camp. In this course we will also examine histories of camp as well as contemporary practices, simultaneously exploring the various critiques of camp across issues of race and class. Since this class will rely on looking at camp in film and performance, we will also study the fundamentals of film theory.Texts: A photocopied reader to include Trash Trio by John Waters. That is the description for my writing class next quarter; I liked the movie Pecker, so I signed up for the class.

I saw that one down at USC (South Carolina, not Southern Cal) at the free theater, that has to be the wierdest film I've seen that I liked.

Personally, I didn't think Pink Flamingos was too terribly entertaining. It was certainly offensive enough, but the humor wasn't quite pointed enough for my tastes. Anyway, Cecil B. Demented is another story, in that Waters makes some very good points with his humor, but is too obvious and preachy about it sometimes; still, quite funny. The one of his I liked the best was Desperate Living. Almost as offensive as Pink Flamingos, but much funnier, in my opinion. Definitely one to see. "Zzzzap!"

If you want some recommendations for more weird-as-fuck movies, I've seen quite a few. The director I'm currently obsessing over is Alejandro Jodorowsky. He's only done about half a dozen, but most of them are amazingly insane and chock full of bizarre, mystical imagery. The only ones semi-available and worth seeing are Fando y Lis, El Topo, The Holy Mountain, and Santa Sangre. You won't be disappointed!

I remember my freshman second semester writing class focused on contemporary poetry (Adrienne Rich, John Ashbury, Mark Doty, if you're familiar), but there was no class that actually allowed you to watch films and write about them, let alone a John Waters' film

Contemporary poetry just sucks in general; give me some Baudelaire or Blake or Poe or Keats anyday.

I don't like Shakespeare, except for The Tempest which is one of my all time favorites. Of the artists you mentioned, I like Titian and da Vinci. I am not an art lover, but I do have my favorites, such as Van Gogh, Lautrec, Degas, and Dali

:barf: Adrienne Rich is one of my all time most hated writers The thing that bothered me about Rich was her poetry always had the same theme: femininism. Ashbury, however, was just too obscure for my tastes.
