saw the Bunnymen last night @ the Paradiso...
The band were on top form, gig reminiscent of our experience at neworder Paris '01 night one.
Another funny gig, another one we’ll be laughing about for a long time. Still do whenever I hear the Alan Wise intro on Retro from that gig in Paris.
Drawn to the balcony for a clear view, we sat on chairs more commonly found in Churches and Dutch Bruintjes (old-school in-decline brown-walled Dutch bars where one goes to talk about normen en waarden, or norms and values).
The sound at the Paradiso was pretty poor (mixed in a saucepan, not thru' a desk) and the lighting crew thought they were staging a fifth-rate warehouse rave (intense blue spots and other such lark). Hilarious.
Mac kept informing them between songs and clearly gesturing (2 fingered guns) in their direction but they were evidently clueless. Classic!! Resorted to having a word with said people myself after a few songs. Eventually they responded.
And the stage attendants invaded the proscenium every other song to fiddle about with stuff, chat with the band (take drink orders?!), the mic/monitors or some such electrical gadgetry was apparently not up to the job. Trashed the Bub's voice in places; most impolite to say the least.
You know the songs, they were written to be learnt and sung. Over The Wall and Villiers Terrace both sound as energised today as back whenever. The subtleties of Mr Golden Tonsils were there on the usual suspects Killing Moon, Lips Like Sugar, Back of Love, Rescue, and the latter ballad Nothing Ever Lasts Forever although one had to fight a little to find it in the melee of the mix. Shame he didn’t busk it with Ceremony but perhaps that was somewhat over-expectant.
Walk on the Wild Side and excerpt of What Are You Going To Do With Your Life? (directed at one of the stage attendants perchance) both great cheeky moments.
Cruised it in true style, the evening summed up by Mac's endeavours to light up under attack from a cold-air blower.
The wife was dead impressed and wants to see them again.
Cracking stuff. Great band.
