Fave post-punk LP

I've probably missed loads, but the list is already way too long as I got carried away. The period 1977 - 1982 is my favourite of all musically (and also includes loads of other types of great music as well as the above - 2 Tone/Mod Revival, synth-pop, etc, etc). It seems to be fashionable again with a current load of bands (Radio 4, Liars, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) all citing this stuff. I've deliberately excluded NO/JD to remove bias.

I chose Seventeen Seconds, since it's a great album. A bit lightweight compared to Faith and Pornography, the two albums that would come after it (which are two of my favorites). It still has A Forest, one of the 10 best Cure songs ever in my opinion, and Play for Today is a catchy single also. A few of the songs are too repetitive, but it's good mood music to just put on in the background.

Really gonna have to think about this one, played quite a few of those to death, and most of 'em have held up pretty well, like the Bunnymen, Cab Voltaire, Fall, and Josef K albums. About the only one I didn't much care for was Mask by Bauhaus, and I would've added Y by The Pop Group to that list.

Tough choice between Echo and The Cure. I love Heaven Up Here, my fave Bunnymen work. But if i had to choose between the 2 which I could keep it would be 17 Seconds. This album is really good for the end of the day/night when you need to chill out and fall asleep. Not a bad song on there allthough the production is a bit shitty. I rate this as proabably the best Cure album next to Disintegration.

Voted for the Bunnymen, still one of the all time bests, I played the hell out it for almost two years, plus it was the first of their reissues I picked up. Gang Of Four, The Fall, Josef K, and the Cabs are thisclose behind the top.

The Cure came in very close to last place, IMO, just ahead of Bauhaus, who I only ever liked on some singles, and Adam/Ants, who I never liked at all. Sold my copy of Seventeen Seconds within a year of its purchase as well.

17 Secs is a masterpiece. Really cool shit.

Besides post-punk has a propensity for a gothic feel. Would you find it in Technique please? Ha ;)

Well it's hard to label them when their different albums seem to transcend different genres. I mean when I listen to Fine Time I don't associate it with post punk, for it's much more of a dance tune.

I will just add this:

When I did the poll, I completely forgot "Y" by the Pop Group and "Killing Joke" (1980) by, erm, Killing Joke - both essential post-punk LPs. Additionally, I hadn't realised that the number of choices was limited, so my alphabetical list was cut off at "S", or you would have also got:

Cut - The Slits Jeopardy - The Sound Wilder - The Teardrop Explodes Boy - U2 154 - Wire Drums and Wires – XTC

I'm voting for "Correct Use of Soap" at the moment, although I love all these albums, as a small commemoration for John McGeoch.

Those additions would've made this poll just a little bit harder than it was, which is a compliment BTW. Depending on the day, I might've pulled for Y, but then again, Grotesque and Entertainment! are also top-notch records *sigh* To these ears, 154 is a classic as well, doesn't sound dated like some of the others do, i.e. U2 and XTC.

This should have been entitled 'which is your favourite album from this list of completely unrelated albums released between about 78 and 82'. Other than the fact that most of them wouldn't have been made if it were not for punk kicking the door in in 76, they're a fairly diverse selection. I mean, the thuggish retro grind of The Birthday Party shares little common ground with Felt's pastoral twang. Likewise Go4's didactics vs Adam Ant's preening. Still - you asked which one we liked best and I voted for Magazine. I think there are 5 classics in there -Magazine, ACR, Josef K, Siouxsie and The Human League, a couple of nearly classics (Crispys, EATB), a couple of overrated albums by v.good bands (Go4, PIL), a sadly missed opportunity (Delta 5) and some unspeakable dross (Adam and The Ants, Birthday Party, Bauhaus).

That's a fairly accurate summary DC! I would point out though that post-punk doesn't necessarily equate to a particular sound (although it is neat shorthand) more an aesthetic, and I think all these albums have that (okay, I'm regreting including Bauhaus perhaps, but otherwise...)

I also liked OMD's debut and Sons and Fascination by Simple Minds a lot
