Explain me, once and for all, how in hell can you tolerate all these artists doing lip-sync on television on shows like Top Of The Pops ?
You almost NEVER see this in North America!!!
I especially can't figure why the artists accept doing this... they look so silly on songs that end with a fade out!!!!

Cos the majority of acts these days couldn't string two notes together if their lives depended on it.

I agree, though, it's pathetic & they look even worse when a song fades out. Actually I've seen a few that could do with lessons in lip-syncing no matter what part of the song they're on.

you must be kinding! who are you refering to?
there is a whole generation of USA acts who have no idea and are terrified of perform actually live Britney Spears, Christina Ag, Janet Jackson, and all the other ho pop tarts dancing and what they are wearing are whats important... all the boy bands... all the programmed stuff that cant really be done live... hip hop is great but has never really learned how to actually perform live... popular radio rock bands are barely live they are so produced...
musicians on TV and in the movies before that usually lipsync for the most part... its the norm, not the exception
mainstream audiences don't like the songs to sound different from the hits they know.
As far as I know, Milli Vanelli used to TOUR... and I doubt they were really singing...
So it does happen!
They even use playback to enhance their voices sometimes, but it's true that they do play live though.
Lip syncing happens all the time in North America especially with talentless acts that focus more on getting a bunch of street people to dance in unison rather than the music itself. janet jackson being the worst offender.
Although it's a bit daft, and NO didn't lip-sync, there have nevertheless been some trully fantastic performances on TOTP, which is why it used to be such an important program in this country.
Not wishing to drag Morrissey into the conversation too often, but those early Smiths TOTP performances (mimed) were life-changing. Also, it showcased really unexpected acts: alongside the likes of Wham! and Spandau Ballet, you'd get Buzzcocks, or Echo & the Bunnymen. Although for some reason the Dead Kennedys were never invited to perform on it.
Ok for the "performances" (acting, actually), but when I look for a performance, I look for a musical and vocal one!
As for that phenomenon in North America, I wasn't referring to bubblegum artists such as Janet and Britney who use this during their shows (which I think is total crap anyway), but rather to the fact that you will NEVER see lip-sync on Letterman or Leno. They would just not accept that.
So why is it ok in the U.K. ? It's beyond me... and I know it doesn't happen all the time because some of them DO sing live. So what are the criterias?
