I've had little or no choice...but anyway, here's what I've read the past couple of weeks:

"Naked", "Dress Your Children" (David Sedaris)

"Peace Kills" (P.J. O'Rourke)

"The Partly Cloudy Patriot" (Sarah Vowell)

and I'm almost finished with "The National Lampoon's 1964 Yearbook"

Oh yes...I've been slowly working my way through "Journey to the End of the Night" by Celine, which was graciously sent to me by Mr. Tristan Jayol, Esq.

Next on the list is either "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Marquez, or "Maldoror" by Lautreamont.

Well, actually, I'll probably start in on "The Horror Genre" by Paul Wells, followed by "Horror: The Film Reader" by Mark Jancovich, then "The Dread of Difference" by Barry Keith Grant, and finally "The Cinematic Body" by Steven Shaviro.

The Last Citadel by David L Robbins This really needs to be made into a film.

David, the South Park episode where Officer Barbrady learns to read popped in my mind when I read that critique.

As for myself, reading The Glory Game, by Hunter Davies, about a year in the life of a professional football (soccer) team, the Spurs in the early 70's.

Also Dave Katz's biography of the crazy man himself, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, and a nonfiction work about an 1824 mutiny on a whaling ship, the Globe, in a book called Demon Of The Waters.

I've been reading Camus's "The Fall." I do wish I could read more, but my job seems to be consuming most of my time.

"1984" by George Orwell, get's better (and more relevant) everytime I read it.

William Boyd's "Any human heart". I read it in English (though it's not my mother tongue) last week and really appreciated it.

33 1/3: Unknown Pleasures was a good read not very big though.

"John Major"s Biography - not good, and I dont know why I did. "Pioneers of modern typography" - not as good as the (1st edition) version down my local library. "Wild Swans" - good. "Mr Nice" - very readable. Howard marks. "designed by" Peter Saville - my most read (6 times) book. "The Society of the Spectacle" - nothing like a bit of debord, the reason i ever got interested in Factory. "Englands Dreaming" - sex pistols and punk book. still reading it. brilliant book, everyone here should give it a read "design for the real world" - a classic. "hegmony or survival" - chomskys latest, not his greatest, but better than anything else at the moment.

im a pretty big pistols fan, i read englands dreaming a little over 2 yrs ago, lydon's own book is much better in my opinion, lydon even says the author of englands dreaming is a wanker, and wouldnt know the first thing about the reality of the pistols

'eats, shoots & leaves' is pretty good. i'm just finishing it up now.

Jon Savage is an amazing writer. Lydon would say that. I think "englands dreaming" is the best book ive ever read. Theres more to it than the pistols, its more of a cultural analysis of Britain in the late 70s, and a damn fine one too.

I wish Savage would do a factory book.

I agree, it's a quality book. Sure, his writing can go overboard at times, as music journos tend to, but it had a lot going on in it. I only wish I'd known about postmodernism, and people like Debord and the situationists, before reading it; that whole first part of the book left me more than a bit confused.

ENGLAND DREAMING is the last book i completed.A BRILLIANT read but as i tend to only read music books these days i cannot recommend anything except STONE ALONE by BILL WYMAN.That guy really knows his facts due to the detailed diaries he kept from the early 60's.A must read even if you don't like THE STONES! Plenty to read yet like TOUCHING and FROM JOY DIVISION...but can't get the TIME. :D

I have been told by a few people that "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown is a good book.

highly recommend "any human heart" by william boyd - here's the review: "excise the title page, ditch the jacket, and hope that a century hence, someone will pull a copy of Boyd's book from the stacks, turn to the index, and figure she's stumbled upon the vast, entertaining, melancholy journals of on Logan Mountstart, a minor writer and gallarist who knew everyone. Intimate with ambitions and infidelities, it's very funny, monstrously sad, and amazingly vivid. Any human heart, for all its titular generality, is that rare thing: a book so good that one foolishly hopes - as one does with life - it will never end.

Just finished "Journey to the End of the Night." Recommended if you enjoy pages upon pages of bleak, nihilisitc insights about such things as life in general and other important things. Pleasantly misanthropic, misogynistic, and Left Bank frenchiness. Thanks for the tip, Tristan! Now to go hang myself.... :D

try Stiff by Mary Roach...very interesting.

Umm....it's not about what I think that you think it's about.

Currently I am reading "The girl with a pearl earring" since I missed the movie. Beautifully written gives a very interesting insight on the creation of a work of art. I wholeheartedly recommend it even with if it hasn't god the adorable Scarlett Johansson inside, and that is a BIG MINUS!

Also a book by a Spanish author "The Marquis of Tamaron" on the friendship between a young marxist and two reactionary brothers united by a love of learning and nature inmediately before the Spanish Civil war. A beautiful book.

Just finished a really bad book myself: "Gen X TV"( also just wrote a review of it for Amazon, I think I unleash my bile on it pretty well)

This thing came out in '97, and perhaps is unintentionally hilarious when devoting whole sections of the book to shows no longer on the air (Beverly Hills 90210, Friends, Melrose Place, countless other crap shows). Basically it's just a product of its time, dated the moment it was printed, almost like watching a really funny but bad movie. Utterly worthless but funny

Funnily enough I just read an article in a newspaper today saying that the number of readers of fiction in America has steadily declined since 1992. I do not have the numbers handy but it was quite a decrease. Quite a good book that one, Trevor, Husker Du were the loudest band I ever heard.

Only drawback for me is that I read most of the sources that Azzerard cites for the stories back then, so quite a lot of the book was a rehash, but he does an excellent job of putting things together.

Wish he would've found some space for the Meat Puppets story, and how they confounded punk audiences at the time with their hippie-ish attitudes.

Ahh, I work with an obnoxious fan of theirs, each spring he keeps calling Nomar God, we should vote Theo Epstein for President, Pedro will win 25 games and strike out 300, the Sox will win 110 games, etc. Plus, I've seen shows about their fans on things like The Travel Channel, it seems to me they almost enjoy the legendary suffering they've had since 1918.

Seriously, I've been a Mets fan since I got into baseball, Giants and Mariners too. On the bright side, I did root for Boston in 1975, when I didn't care so much, against the Reds, who I could not stand at all.

Just finished reading Michael Moore's "Dude, Where's My Country", funny and terrifying at the same time.

"Disgrace" by Coetzee. I did not know it was possiblle to write so tersely. The story is good but it is Coetzee's writing that counts. I would give 10 years of my life (Say from 100 on) to be able to write like that.

Also a book on the origins and later developments of Indie Music. Not bad but the authors show off too much and they pay undue attention to all the tedious variations of Hardcore. They devote a whole chapter to the obscure and negligible "riot grrls" (I had always though those were the Spice Girls!) and Happy Mondays and the whole Madchester scene are mentioned almost in passim as an afterthought. New Order get red carpet treatment, though.

As for a book, I checked one out from the library about chess wizard Bobby Fischer, Bobby Fischer Goes To War, and the crazy days when he was challenging for the world championship with Spassky.

Weirdly enough, our small city library also had a Sun Ra CD and Quills on DVD, which I also borrowed. Love Geoffrey Rush in that one.

I was quite shocked by the revelations that Wolfgang makes about his former band mates (or rather, employers) Florian Schneider and Ralph Hutter.They appear to have been complete wankers at times.Wolfgangs (sometimes wonderfully naive) observations on life and things that have happened to him are a great read.Theres great resons to be cheerful about life in these pages and Wolfgangs attitude that you should cherish every day and enjoy the simple things like clouds in the sky and the birds singing really strikes a chord.He left Kraftwerk because he wanted to be a human again and not a robot.
