The Star Wars Trilogy finally got released on DVD here in the states! I recently got back from one of the local stores having a midnight sale for it. I bought the widescreen version. Am I the only pathetic individual on here who would do that ?

Okay...I'm a HUGE fan, but you didn't see me there at midnight to buy it! I wouldn't drag my ass to the store at midnight to get the latest New order album (like any store would open it's doors for THAT).
And what was the point? Were you afraid they were going to run out?
Did you dress up as one of the characters as well?
I'll pick it up on the way home from work this afternoon. Wow, I hope it isn't sold out everywhere!

Curiously, here in Portugal it was released today. This means that, as it's 14.30 right now and I can only leave the office at 17.00, I can only buy the darned thing at 17.15!

is it really true about the modifying of the "jedi Ghosts" in return of the Jedi??? I'll be mad PO'd if it is
I was balls-up into Star Wars circa my 14th or 15th b-day, I remember for my birthday getting 1) The widescreen ORIGINAL (aka Han shoots first) trilogy on VHS 2) Just about every model ship (X Wing, TIE Fighter, Imperial Shuttle, Snowspeeder, etc.) from KB Toys. The movies blew me away, and remembered loving them when they were re-released in theatres withing 3 months of each other in '97.
However, maybe it's a sign of maturity, cuz none of the old sci-fi stuff does it for me anymore. Or maybe the fact that I got into better interests around college time.

I was very tempted to buy it, but refrained myself to do it because I already own the trilogy boxset in VHS and it's still in mint quality. Of course, I know how much a DVD is better, but I feel screwed when it comes to buying something I already have -- just as when as remastered CD is released, for instance.
So how is it? Is the extra DVD worth it?
Also, unless you don't have a widescreen TV yet, what do you people usually pick when it comes to DVD format: do you buy widescreen (16:9) anyway or do you pick full screen (4:3) ?
I have this huge ambiguity about this -- I do not own a LCD or plasma 16:9 TV yet and won't have one before many years (pricey $$$), but eventually, I'm sure this will become the new standard and will be widely available for an affordable price. So just because of this, for the long run, I am pushed towards buying widescreen DVDs...
...but then again, it's often frustrating to watch a 16:9 format film on a standard television.
So what do you do?
Always go for widescreen. It's how movies are meant to be seen. As for the DVD being worth it, I'd say it's entirely subjective to your personal interests and biases toward the film and format. I will mention that it sounds absolutely freaking fantastic in 5.1.
Yeah, widescreen without a doubt. Like Bentley said, it is the way movies are meant to be seen. Also, the trilogy on dvd is worth the money. Both the sound and picture quality are amazing. Although I don't like some of the little changes Lucas has made yet again to these films, (someone referred to this being the Special, Special Edition), it's still definately worth getting.
after all my carping about it, I didn't pick up the trilogy DVD this week. But I do have my reasons:
I bought the Daily Show's book "America (The Book)", which is hilarious but also made me a bit wary of spending more money this week.
I picked up "Mr. Show" first and second season this weekend, so I was feeling all DVD'd out.
My birthday is in a couple of weeks, so it might be cheaper to blackmail my mom to get it for me
I knew every store I went to would be out of them due to dorks who go to the midnight sale shit (I mean that only as a reflection on your need to be there at midnight, when you could be in bed asleep, or watching "Charlie Rose", or waiting for Conan to come on), so I figured I'd wait.
Thanks to the hurricane coming thru last weekend, I have some overtime that I worked, and thus Monday's check should (but probably won't) be sufficent to allow for said purchase (if I can't blackmail Ma), and have some left over.
Now that I've done all that...I did rent "New Hope" from the local video store, so I'll be cracking open a six-pack and enjoying the digital feast a little...
One thing I'll say about DVDs, that maybe is just because I don't have a "hi-def" TV: Sometimes the images kinda look less solid as they edge towards the black bars for widescreens. I can't recall if this is true for videos as well, but it's just something I notice every now and then and wonder "hmm?" Anyway, that's all for now

I bought it last night.. widescreen of course, otherwise it will be completely obsolete once I change my TV for a HD-TV....
I must say I'm a little disappointed of the package though... cheap box indeed! but what's good is the DVDs themselves.
So Anakin's 'Force ghost' reverted back 20-odd years whereas Obi-Wan's stayed the same as when he died? 
George Lucas is a bit of a twat really. 
And I'm still not happy with the Han/Greedo scene.
*edit* Just occurred that it may be that it goes back to before Anakin was seduced by the Dark Side. Fair enough, sort of.

I taped the film last time they were on telly a couple of years ago. Haven't actually watched the vids yet.
I finished watching the trilogy... and I found one difference that is UNIQUE to the DVD trilogy...
In the final scene of the Return of the Jedi, Anakin Skywalker is played by Hayden Christenson instead of the original actor...

But in the sense of continuity with respect to the STAR WARS saga as a whole, it makes more sense to see Hayden, a character that many are now much more familiar with than some old crusty feeble old cunt. And remember, the idea was to shoe them as they left this world as Jedi...and that's how he left...a young Anakin. That old dude messes with the chee of the universe as he was that whipper snapper Darthy Vedder!!!

The packaging on the dvd in the uk is shite-the inner boxes are ok,but the outer sleeve is thin card crap. Lucasfilm did a much better job with the Indiana Jones dvds.
My, Oh My... I'm not sure that I like the idea of simply erasing an actor's work like that. I think the original Anakin Skywalker did a fair job back in the 80's.
So I guess not only did they put the face of the new Anakin into the scenes where we can see him in the Darth Vader costume after the fight with Luke and the Emperor, but I guess you can see him as well as a "ghost" alongside Obi-Wan and Yoda at the end of the movie?
How does it look?? Is the retouch obvious, or does it look like it was always made like that?
I'm mystified. 
...and I just realize: if you're going to change the original actor playing Anakin with the new one, then logic commands that you do the same with Obi-Wan Kenobi, eh ?
So is Alec Guinness still playing the old parts as a "ghost" ???

They didn't replace the actor when he dies...but they did finally touch out his eyebrows, as they shoulda doen in the first place.
I think the ghost scece is meant to show them all as they died as "Jedi"...which would explain why Sir Alec Guiness still holds the OB1 mantle.

It looks like it has always been that way...and I'm happy about it. It's George's vision...and who am I to bitch about it.
They only changed the ghost.. it's the same actor when Luke removes the mask...
As for Alec Guinness, his role is far too important in the first movie, the role of the "man behind Dark Vader" is actually 45 seconds of movie only, as he's not the one who act as Dark Vader nor his voice.
They did change the emperor too, well, they changed him in The Empire Strikes Back, not in the Return of the Jedi.. as they took the same actor who did Palpatine in Episode 1...
