best cover version

what is the best cover version of any song you've ever heard?

for me, there's no question:

husker du's cover of the mary tyler moore theme song (love is all around). especially since the show took place in minneapolis and the band were from minneapolis--a perfect band to cover the song and they did a fine job.:D

ok, i have to add a caveat: if that song never existed, it would be manic street preachers' cover of suicide is painless (MASH). they rock out at the end and capture the absurdity, anger, humour, and sadness of both the film and the TV show.

Bauhaus' cover of Ziggy Stardust, and Primal Screams' cover of Some Velvet Morning. Both are incredibe songs, and Bauhaus did some great covers too. And of course new order covering Joy division.

Saint Etienne's cover of 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart'.

And I really like the Get-Up Kids' take on "Regret", but I don't know that I'd nominate it for "best cover version" :shurg:

I usually mention Aztec Camera's take of Van Halen's Jump, the acoustic one that ends with the wall of feedback.

Einsturzende Neubauten's single of Sand is great too, Blixa handling both the vocal parts originally done of the duet by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood. Utterly brilliant live.

It doesn't surpass the original, but Love Tractor (pals of REM) do a wonderful version of Neon Lights that never fails to brighten the day with each listen.
