did you know that john peel was present at lee harvey oswald's assassination, and he is visible in one of the pictures of oswald being shot (although i don't know which one)? he was working for a radio station in dallas at the time and was covering the kennedy assassination and the oswald press conference.

My favourite John Peel factoid is that he was the first person to use the word anorak to describe a sad, anal fan.

When he was on Radio Caroline (a pirate radio station that broadcast from a boat that sailed just outside UK waters) fans would hire boats and ride out to see the Caroline. The wouldn't try to get on board, just bob about, freezing cold in their anoraks, watching the Caroline.

my fav john peel yarn was that he used to drive the long way round to work to avoid essex.because drivers in essex view the use of indicators as "a sign of weakness".
