this guy is well over-rated.
Having forced myself to watch an episode of Extras (only because his lordship sir Patrick Stewart was in it) i must say it was shit. I really do not know why people find his TV shows funny, the office was the same for me,total crap.
Am i living in a major minority here or does anyone else think the same as me?
the office is brilliant. i have season one in my DVD player right now, as a matter of fact. can't go for too long without watching an episode or two.
and gervais' rendition of 'if you don't know me by now' pisses all over ginger twat's!
i haven't seen his new show, so i can't comment on it, i'm afraid.

i hate ricky gervais - particularly as an xfm presenter, but i think extras is wicked. i especially liked the one with kate winslet in it.

if you saw a picture of my dad when he was younger (it's fading with age, but not going grey, strangely) and of me as a baby, you'd know i have nothing against gingers!

I think he's a crap comedian, but his writing borders on the genius at times (there's been a few choice moments in Extras).
He's simply not a comedian though. He's a comedic actor. I saw Politics twice. First time I thought it was the funniest thing on earth, couldn't get enough of it. Second time I found out it was the same line for line. Even the supposedly impromptu bits weren't. It was like he was delivering an inch-perfect speech he knew off by heart.
However, I've just picked up Meet Ricky Gervais on bootleg DVD so looking forward to that. From memory, it didn't go down too well at the time cos a lot of the celebs missed the point he was 'in character' ripping into them, so made for painful viewing at times, 'painful viewing' seems to be what he excels at. Embarrassing pauses are his forte. He likes to make you squirm.
Anyone see the American Office?! Didn't quite hit the spot, the Gervais character just seemed too OTT.

The UK Office was a masterpiece, only watched two of the American version - I agree it was waaaay to OTT 
I thought he was brilliant on the 11'o'clock show an all. Haven't seen that DVD you mention Al - but you know me address

Thought the office was really pretty good, though its one of those things that while its very funny its hard to watch because it makes you wince with embarresment too much. Only seen one episode of Extras and the exact same problem seemed to apply, only more so.(also, I reckon its an unfair portrayal of extras! the one's I've known weren't frustrated actors but just people wanting casual jobs for money with no interest whatsoever in real acting)
Didn't much care for Gervaise's stand-up video. Found myself wondering about questions of taste so much I kept forgetting to laugh. Possibly that's just me.

I've never been very keen on Billy Connolly. Find him annoying and less funny than Gervaise. Don't like the way he told jokes about disabled people while sucking up to the rich and powerful like Prince Charles, don't like his advertising the lottery (doesn't he have enough money already, that he needs to encourage more poeople to clog up supermarket queues while throwing their money away?) and didn't like his defending Mel Gibson's dire Christ film. Didn't he also make a tasteless Ken Bigley joke?

The Office was the most well observed thing on TV in a long time (except Fr Ted if you live in these parts). I aggree that he is a better writer/actor than stand up. I must've watched each office episode at least 4 times at this stage - and still find them funny.
I still have to catch all the extras. It doesnt seem as cutting though.
Never seen the UK "Office" (apart from a few of the clips on the official website), but I love the US version. It's ten times better than any of the other crap currently on NBC's schedule (Will and Grace ain't exactly a sitcom anymore so much as a "hey, look who the celebrity guest star is this week!" kind of showcase). I like it, dammit, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
Having said all that, I have no opinion of Ricky Gervais :p

No you're not. I sat through one episode of The Office & just could not see what so many found so appealing about it. Maybe it's because of that but I just can't stomach Gervais at all, even watching him presenting awards/hosting events is enough to make me hit the mute button. I don't find him at all funny.
We're most definitely in a minority though.

Down to a question of taste mate. IMO Billy Connolly is the funniest man alive. I have a mate that thinks the same as you (he's rich now and couldn't give a fuck / doing lotto adverts etc...) dunno what yer referring to with the disabled bit - but yes, apparently he did make a joke about Ken Bigley, he made a mistake - not the first comedian to give a joke in bad taste though. I have loads of his stand up videos, and even though you know what's coming I still find masel cracking up.

The video of that song just kills me, there's an easter egg on one of the DVD's that's basically a blooper of the video, quite funny from what I remember but I haven't seen it in awhile.
The dialog from first episode of the US Office seemed to be about fifty percent quoted verbatim from the original, a bit offputting at first for me, but I grew to like it mostly because of the US Gareth, name of Dwight I think. I know people like that, so relevance works for me in this situation, and the US equivalent of Dawn and Tim aren't quite as interesting.
I wasn't a fan of Carrell on the Daily Show either, but I don't mind him here, for the same reasons as for Gareth/Dwight.
I guess NBC is bringing it back this fall, the season one DVD is out now.
Extras is brilliant and about X10 more awkward than the office. there are some moments i can barely stand to watch because they are so uncomfortable. i love it.

Funny as in the office...and I saw POLTICS and that was funny stand up,and very near the knuckle,where he indiscriminatly slated every section of society...very cheeky fella by all accounts,he does tend to go to the far end of a fart,on some of his stand up mind.In small doses he's a funny guy I'd say..

Don't get me wrong, I have every intention of trying to see the original, but I think it's unfair to expect the new one to be "just like" the Brit original. Steptoe and Son found new life over here as Sanford and Son, so it's not impossible for a show based on a foreign original to emerge in its own right. Do I want American TV to get so lazy that it has to start importing sitcoms like it did reality shows, from the UK? No, but in my humble opinion the US "Office" succeeds in being something of its own. As someone said earlier, it's all a matter of taste.
Let's not forget, we have the Brits to thank for "American Idol"...that's a declaration of war if I ever saw one

i don't expect the american office to be exactly like the original, but the british show was so perfectly banal that it made the humour that much more real. i haven't seen the american series, but most american sitcoms don't allow the audience to discover the jokes for themselves--i keep waiting for a ticker to come across the screen which reads: this joke references X and the punchline means Y. i often find the best humour comes from 'dramatic' shows, such as CSI, six feet under, and especially buffy the vampire slayer (surprise, surprise). the american office might be funny, but i have such a difficult time with sitcoms that it's flown under my radar. maybe i'll give it a look-see next season to compare...we'll see. but only if you promise to rent six feet under, season 1. ;)

There's a lot of British sensibility to the American Office, I don't know how much in spirit it is to the original but there is a very dry sense of humor at work. Also, Carell is over-the-top but in a good way, and it's funny to watch the reactions others have to him. Hey, I was banging the drum for "Arrested Development" when it was a blip on most people's radar, so I'm used to being the lone voice of reason :p

Actually, I do, but like all good Germans I break them when I see the chance to invade France via Belgium and still have time to hold off a Russian assault on East Prussia (sorry, I'm reading a book about WWI and it's invading my more unfocused posts). I have seen episodes from "Six Feet", but it's another of those HBO shows that I can appreciate but don't necessarily "embrace". I can appreciate the genius of the Sopranos, but I'm not going to make it "appointment television". I like what I like, and that's that...but I *might* rent the first season if the local video place has it. If........

I just want to report that I did not rent "Six Feet Under", but I DID go out and buy the first season of the UK Office, and I've spent the afternoon watching it....

Just kidding, it's really good...(here's the important part) in its own right. I refuse to choose between the two (though my sympathies lie with the American. You gotta represent, yo...), both are equally good and worthy of me watching them. There...I have spoken

The opening credits of which were filmed round the corner from my gaff, the two of them looking at reflections of themselves in a 'Powerhouse' electrical store, which has incidentally just recently closed down.

Fair 'nuff. Don't think I've ever watched an entire performance of his, everytime I've caught him on telly he's almost immediately said something that annoyed me causing me to change channel.
I do grant you he's not as annoying as Ben Elton. At least his accent is real.

Thought I'd read that it'd start in the US on the 25th of September, I'll check it out just to see what it's like, seeing as new episodes of Deadwood won't be airing until sometime after the first of the year.
