Why do people find heavy metallers funnier than hip hoppers?

depends on the hip-hop and the metal. there's excellent hip-hop and awful hip-hop; same with metal. i'd hardly put iron maiden and old metallica in the same category as '80s hair metal! ;)

Exactly. Hip-hop is not funny, they can kill ya, it's an enormous culture. Metal is white trash. Even the Clash and New Order were into HH, but hardly into HMR (well for the little exception of TBTHOG :))

head-banging music with silly ass lyrics compared to raw, ghetto induced, silly ass lyrics of hip hop that has mainstream power-bottom line-generates into $$$ so 50 cents, ludracris, etc.. are the ones laughing all the way to the bank.
It really depends. '80s Metallica had some excellent riffs and the lyrics weren't laughably bad; Motley Crue, on the other hand, is a parody of good heavy metal. I dislike hip-hop - the image, the lyrics, the phoniness, the canned-sounding "instrumentation", the fact that annoying shite like "Baby Mama" (from last summer, in case you forgot) can be released. Perhaps if I hadn't grown up in Philadelphia, I wouldn't dislike the genre as much, but the overexposure makes me hate every rap song on the radio. In fact, I didn't even know Nirvana - or any newer rock music - existed until about 1994, because all that was played on urban radio stations was early '90s rap and pop.

What about Nine Inch Nails, poweful emotive and experimental metal?
What about Sabbath, Napalm Death? Working class lads reflecting their surrounding in the way JD did?

A lot of metal is serious stuff...
Like all other music genres it has a silly, a 'cool' and a serious side.
I'm not particularly fond of either genre though they both have their moments.
I'm completely convinced that hip hop is this generation's New Wave:
Near total dependence on canned, candyfloss electronic backings
Bombastic, egotistical frontmen
Large focus on a heavily stylized, extravagant visual and fashion element
Dependence on mimetic music videos that serve as nothing more to show off the vocalist's charisma, visual appearance, and lap of luxury (Duran Duran invented the 'Bling-Bling' video with Rio)
Genre revolving almost entirely around infectous hit seasonal singles by a large clique of established bignames, with albums generally being afterthoughts and singles forgotten within a few months.
Music that all sounds vaguely the same down to the vocalists, yet manages to be fairly catchy in the manner of getting stuck in your head.
A few generalisations there I think Hannett.
There's plenty of creative, intelligent and inspiring hip-hop out there that doesn't fit your stereotypes.
Hip-hop culture not funny? Play some GTA: San Andreas. It's a hoot.

As for hip hop being this generatiosn New Wave, it's been going on too long and it's showing its age. Non-stick wallpaper music with the flavor of the month.

One type of metal I've always hated is extreme metal: Slayer etc reveling in wearing tight leather trousers and praising Belezub.

Down to earth metal (like Sabbath, Motorhead, AC/DC, Meshietica, G N R) are the best of the genre.

Clean-faced, upper-middle class suburban kids in track suits - that truly is what makes rap laughable. Quite frankly, I never understood the allure of it, especially when you have parents who have money and who'll probably buy you a car and a good college education. I've never lived in the suburbs, but nevertheless, I grew up in a city, although not in any project thankfully, that smells of sewage, has a school district that gives you textbooks from the '80s in 2000, and has pervasive drug and violence problems (I've never sold drugs, but once in a pizza place, some kid tried to sell me a few dime bags of weed and a white powdery substance). Have I succumbed and began listening to Beanie Siegel? I honestly prefer New Order.

When i see Heavy Metallers i think of the two funny characters that Hale and Pace used to do many years ago, allways stoned they were,i can never think of the names of the charachters,thats got me thinking now any help with the names of them two???
Nothing funny about Public enemy. Some serious genius hip hop. You just have to look for great hip hop. A lot of great shit out their that is more groundbreaking then popular guitar bands, or indie rock for that matter.
Living in brooklyn, im exposed to a lot of hip hop that people are making in their basement apartments and have a very DIy attitude. More punk then anything.

Can't argue with Public Enemy, but what I hate about hip hop is the way it's all been stereotyped, and that rappers appear to be living up to it, instead of breaking the mould (Kanye West is a bit of both)

But Public Enemy (RIP) is what 10 15 years ago? In Fear of a Black Planet should be required listening. But what happened? Now all we have, mostly, is this bling bling shit or criminal rap about killing other rappers ect. Putting Lambourgini doors on an Escalade could feed and cloth some hurricane victims, probably buy someone a house. Maybe too many trips to the Candy Store is spreading AIDS and STDs.

I think your misrepresenting all hip hop. It seems like your only aware of hip hop that is presented in the popular mainstream. The american public has demanded their fill of gangster rap, and their getting what they deserve. However,somewhere in the underbelly of American culture, their is hip hop that is waiting to be heard , and that is musically fresh with positive ideals.
