his wife beating is probably a result of his drinking. not an excuse though. i can never understand people who get aggro when drinking, as i'm such a mellow drunk (when drinking).

i happen to own 5 or 6 wife beaters. they're very comfortable.
Alcoholics and smokers need to cease their habits for at least 6 months before they get transplants, and that's all there is to it.
George did stop drinking, so he was eligable. When he relapsed later on he needed help not villification; given how much he's fighting to stay alive that proves that he does want to live.
Addictions are illnesses.

This is all a bit heavy for a site dedicated to New Order really! Best was possibly the greatest player of all time, just didn't get the chance to prove it fully! He was easily distracted away from the game, as most young, rich, famous & good looking blokes in the sixties would easily have been. (nothing much has changed, just that now there is so much money involved in football that the clubs that 'own' the likes of Rooney, Terry, Lampard....won't let them go the same way, otherwise they would be sacked and disgraced!)- unless they are called Alan Smith..... Let's just hope we are not having the same conversation in 10 years about a certain Paul Gascoigne.....
