Well, not quite yet, but he is going to die soon. He was seen getting hammered not long after getting a new liver because he's a pathetic alchololic. if he got a new liver because he damaged his old one with drink, don't you think he'd stop drinking? If reports of him souring his new liver with alcohol are true, he's better off dead. I just hope they can farm out his parts to people who need them.

I met George Best in 1995 in London. He was completly wasted but very friendly. I've seen highlight reels of his playing days but have no concept of his value as a footballer.

Edit: Title's been edited. A bit too close to the bone. A legend as a footballer, wasted his life with drink. Nearly as good as Jimmy Johnstone, but not quite.

Thats a bit unfair. The Alcoholism is as much a sickness as the liver disease. He is an easy man to poke fun at. Im no football fan, nor do I like much of what Ive heard him say, but to have a go at someone for being an alcoholic isnt right. He is a human being, and deserves to be treated as one.

Also: Organ donation is a really good thing to do, regardless of where your spare parts go to. There has been a subtle message from the redtops about all this "look at what happens your liver" etc. Its a bullshit argument, that doesnt hold up.

he needs help, that doesn't mean he's better off dead. and he's a football legend, by the way.

success! i figured this would be a way to piss off a few people!

you're right, alcoholism is a sickness. however, when someone gets a new organ because an activity destroyed their organ, then continues to do the same activities that destroyed the original organ, that person is not deserving of the donor organ. people do quit drinking. it's not impossible, but you have to want to quit.

His skills as a footballer should have nothing to do with his access to healty organs, but i assume he got special treatment because he scored a few goals in an England top.

Let's say Joe Average was a lifetime smoker and needed a lung transplant. Lets say they had a donor and did a successful transplant. The reason for Joe Average's original Lung going tits-up was smoking 5 packs a day. If Joe Average continues to smoke after getting a new lung, is he an asshole or a hero? If he dies because of the continued smoking, should we feel sympathy or did Joe get what he deserved? As the old cliche says, "You made your bed, now you've got to lie in it"

Despite whatever Bestie has done, that was pretty sick.

PS Oh yeah, he played for Northern Ireland, so get your facts right.

The only problem I can see is that there arent enough donors.

A liver transplant, I can imagine, is not fun.

I am a donor, and would be happy if my dead, useless body was used to give Bestie a few more nights on the piss. Thats not an ethical issue for me or you.

The medical system is there to treat sick people. Where do you draw the line? turn away smokers, drinkers, drug takers, sportspeople, fat people, etc, etc.

The root of most illness, and most accidents is carelessness.

Nice one Barney. Couldn't have put it better myself.

he was without doubt, one of the best football players of the last 40 years.

shame he had to blight that history with all the tales of his drinking.

he is very poorly at the moment, and myself as a fellow human, wish him a full recovery (i know this is not very likely, but I wouldn't wish death on anyone)

My own opinion, so don't slag me, is that he would come out better if we judged him as a footballer.

devil's advocate again:

O. J Simpson would be judged better on the merits of an american footballer than as a wife killa'. Dont slag me again, although i may deserve it, because i shouldnt equate Best with O.J..

i really have no op. on this Best fella, just being curious and nosey.

In England, we only really know him as the bloke out of the Naked Gun movies.
