Johnny, I'm jealous.

I wish I had a turntable so I could spin all of my Joy Division 12"s again...

Not sure ,Mike.I may have been in there:scratch: .There used to be a great second hand store just round the corner from Tempest ,down a narrowish street. But i looked yesterday and it's no longer there:(

Yeah i sleep on a chair.Ha ha

It's not a great expensive kit obviously. Those speakers are from another Sony system and they are surprisingly good for how basic and cheap they are.The vynyl sounds fantastic through them .I am serous when i say it sounds better than a CD.A rich ,deep yet crystal clear, dirty clatter!!!.I had to buy a new stylus last week when i dug the old deck out. That cost me £18 but worth every penny:D :music:

Yes, they are. We have some rather nice designer ones at work (as in the 'designers at Debenhams' range). A bit chuffin' expensive, even with the staff discount

That statement, as I'm blue in the bum from telling you all, depends on the scale you measure "good, better, best" on.

It's to do with subjective feel and warmth and suchlike, then, yes I tend to agree it's way better than CD, and so is analgue cassette.

But if you are measure the actualy technical quality, the precise detail of what is reproduced accurately at the far end when compared to what left the studio. Then CD's the mutt's nuts (give or take demanted DAC's and/or shite preamps of course)

I prefer Holst's venus on cd, but BM is certainly better on an SL1210 that's in danger of flaying apart at the seams or being swamped by the sound rig, the crowd and the 300 drinks the DJ's have piled round it (I think technics decks get off on pressure).

Fair point Steve. My deck is a SL-B210.Any idea how old it actually is?.I bought it off a mate back in the early nineties and it was fairly old then.

I don't fuckin believe it.i think i broke (or blew) the amp:cry:

It's stopped amplifying after i was messing around with it connecting it so i can have the tv come through it also.It has a switch to enable you to do that but while playing about i saw a spark in the electrical connection socket.I only bought the amp last week.£25 .

AAAAAAAArghhhhhhhh:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

there is a AUX/PHONO switch on the front of the pre amp.i have it on AUX for playing vynyl and then i intended to set it up so i can switch it to PHONO when i want my tv through the stereo speakers.

The electrical connection - socket on the back of the pre amp.I saw a tiny flash in there as i put the transformer plug into it at one point. Now the amp isn't working.i tried all different things with the leads and stuff but i 'm sure i've blown it

  1. you have that backwards mate.... Phono's what you want for vynil (if the deck connects directly to the amp with no other preamp), aux isn't. phono has the RIAA-Phono preamp circuit attached, aux doesn't (if either do, it's not certain).

You may just have blown the internal fuse (maybe even the one in the plug but i doubt it), it'll be a small one near the power supply board inside.

FWIW, IF you do have a phono preamp in there, and you really did connect a line (it wasn't from a headphone out was it, tell me it wasn't from a headphone out Johnny) level to it...it might just have been enough to pop the amp....a Phono preamp stacks over 60dB of gain in at some frequencies, that's a LOT!

I 'm not certain now about if it's AUX or PHONO i had it set on for Vynyl.I'm not at home now to check ,i'm at my mom's.

There were no headphones involved ,no.

I reckon i have blown an internal fuse as you say.The plug is ok.I'll get the shop i bought it from to check it out this week. They can ascertain the problem. They are decent lot. Cheers for the replies anyway ,Steve
