This is an archived legacy thread. Replies are closed, but the discussion is preserved.

A cozy thread dedicated to those who'd rather figure out the function of the green membrane buttons on a DX-7 than hit on Lacy/Helen.

well, then.... SX3 does import OMF's BTW (not bad...eh...STIL off topic)

I thought we covered this, or do we have to worked out the best brand of fire axe? Maybe an fb01 on a stick would sound better.

Anyway....I'm still allowed to hit on Jemma right?

Hitting on Missy Jem is highly encouraged (if you're single, that is). Just don't start bringing her to band practice or there's going to be trouble.

Hey man don't diss my chick!!!!

(remembers woman at practice slowly....)

Actually, yeah good plan :)

How about updating that website, son?

I think about that at least once a week, the html editor I used for it oringally is still installed, I have no better things in my life to do....yet still I don;t do it.

Not much to update it with except to maybe bother putting some links to tunes.

Hmmm...

I wonder where everyone is?

I was certain that topic header would attract, like, all the smokin' babes.

Perhaps Swollen Nutsack Soul Squadron should challenge Barney's Angels to a football game.

How's your netball Steve? Just warning you, that I could have played at county level, but that needed extra dedication from me and I just couldn't be arsed :D Well, actually, the netball county 'scout' came along to our school to watch a few of us and I got into a bit of a fight with the goal defender. Nasty bitch she was. She elbowed me a few times, so in the end, I lost my patience and just lamped her one.

My netball playing career for Staffordshire was over before it had even started

I'm just here because of the promise of learning more about the DX7/technicals overall and the thread title was absolutely interesting.

Were I a cat, curiousity would have already killed me.

I think GNU reckons I was holding out on him the last time we discussed the evil one. Tell you what tho, I know a guy who can actually program a DX21 AND make it sound good ( like a theremin...surely an instrument you know msh)

I'm absolutely in the same boat as GNU, you name a synth and i'll tell you how it works, unless it sayd Yamaha on it in which case the answer is likely to be "is it not enough that it DOES work?"

SNSS beats the name I came up for the local punk band I "managed" for half a year (that never recorded anything or performed live except for practicing twice to Bob Marley tracks in the drummer's loft) "The Rape Whistles".

My parents got me the DX100 when I was growing up (that's the synth I talked about on another thread.. believe it was the Hook interview one)... they thought that was just a keyboard.. something I could mess around on and learn piano.

 God I hated that thing. I was just a kid, and trying to figure out the programming nearly have me grey hair! These days, I wish I still had it just for nostalgia's sake... but lately I've got my eye on one of those flashy Korg Triton's that I fell in love with a number of years ago.

I almost bought one of those, but the big dick who owned the store (his name was "Big Dick") wouldn't let me touch it and instead played some stupid bird sound effects on it. And then he wanted some crazy amount, even though the thing was years out of date already.

No DX100s in my closet.

I nearly bought one as well (fuck me this is the bullet dodger's club) But got the CZ3000 instead :D smart choice.

I do perve a bit over the Triton, and I liked the Trinity....the further they get from the M1 the better. Firstly cos of the 128 identical pathces on it, and secondly because I reckon they hired in some ex yamaha guys for the OS.

It's the monolith from 2001 big, black and utterly impenetrable.

The only way to get it to sound genuinely great is to get all 8 parts stacked with both fx units going.

It's a bit sad seeing old synths tossed out in garage sales. I saw a number of DX's at a annual tag sale here in town, and if it weren't for discontinued parts, "speaker's wonky there", or gobs of unknown matter sticking up a key, I'd have been nabbing them when I saw them.

Need to start some sort of synth recycling service.

I'm pretty perverted when it comes to music shops - owners kick me out because I spend hours fondling a miniMoog they've got on loan, or going around to each setup and pressing buttons and making things go beep. Some women like to shop for clothing, I like to shop for big, hulking, massively obnoxious electronics.

The Triton was the first workstation I've seen and actually hugged and asked it to marry me. Friends don't go to shops with me anymore due to that.

Did I miss a meeting where the laws of the universe got changed? Why are the women on this site utterly unlike those in the big room outside by house? Bangor is not full of hilarious raven haired loonies or delectable machine-torturers, or wild siberian cricketers.

fairlight CMI...from the moment I heard beat Box and Moments in Love by Art of Noise I read up and found out what it was (and tha it had been making the FGTH records I'd been listening to). When I actually SEEN the thing and found out it cost as much as a very large house...hooked for life. Amazing instrument, a truly unique living silcon creature.

Partial to synclaviers too, mainly as it's the only think more idiotic than a fairlight. The CIA used to check you out before you could get one (Paul hardcastle got turned down by them because of "19" and had to go 2n hand), because it could easily run a medium sized ICBM system....and NASA used to borrow one from time to time because it was the only computer on Earth that could handle the shittle's (sic) telemetry in real time for debug work. AND, I got a mail once after raving about them, frmo a guy who buys, refits and sells them, offering me one for less than the price of 2 kidneys....but he said that half the music on TV today that you think is an orchestra is STILL a 20 yr old synclavier :)

See, my thread KICKS ASS all over that other one.

I really wish I had a PPG Wave or Waveterm, just 'cause it's so cool looking, or a Fairlight. I mean, how cool was that back in the day to see some clown on stage with a computer monitor?

A hometown band had an Oberheim OB8, which was an thing of envy.

Yes. Not everything, mind you (some electronics really only warrant "bastard" as a true name) but computers, instruments, and cars generally qualify.

I taped the PBS "Punk and the Perfect Beat" episode when they first aired it - and seeing all these musicians with these huge racks of electronics, and seeing people messing around with patch cables made me give an internal  to the tv.

I think my first love had to be because I was reading this "Home Recording with Synthesizers" book at the library in.. 91? And being a kid into stuff like that made one weird. The photo that I feel in love with was someone like Rick Wakeman (I believe) playing this ENORMOUS patch system, with this tiny little keyboard stack under it. And all I saw was wires and buttons and pitchbenders and I said "Oh man, that looks cool".

I wish I still had access to that library. I was the only one who had ever checked out that book.

Moog: bob Casio: Cassie ( I know) Atari: STElla Amps...Cynthia the slut and lucretia the loose. Linux box:Hal9000(officially) or Tux Windows Box:Sal9000(officially) $EXPLETIVE_DELETED usually. My bass has always been called Bassie (for the convoluted reason of Jon Pertwee's "Bessie")

I've never named my JV90, because even tho it's my main keyboard an I use it, and there's nothing wrong with it (in fact it never ceases to knock my socks off in terms of what it can do and how cleanly it does it)...but we're just not friends, and that's important with machines as with people, we get on brilliantly but with professional detachment. :D

Instruments that are evil inside BTW....Junos...we have a 60 and a 106....and they have led to my first law .... Campbell's first law of audio engineering states that in all circumstances where one is involved, the Juno is too loud.

can't narrow it to just one...

ARP 2500 Arp 2600 Oberheim Matrix 12

when I was buying lots of vintage synths, I would have loved to have had 'em.

That is one fugly piece of kit.

I remember an interview with Stewart Copeland regarding the re-recording of "Don't Stand So Close to Me." He brought his Fairlight, Sting showed up with his Synclavier, and he couldn't believe how frigging long it took them to record it, with all the futzing around.

And it's still crap compared to the original.

keyboards all held several names: tito was the dx100, i called the triton in the store simon, there's a friend's pro 10 affectionately named pookie ... and somewhere in a closet in an abandoned storage barn there is a neglected Prommer that is ashamed of being known only as "Meaty".

Point of order...Jem asked (like 3 weeks ago). Maya also asked. the webserver does not scan for the presence of a penis. And it's one of the few tracks I ever made that people here might enjoy. Sam Chapman.....Grab those...even if it is just single notes....PPG=A Secret Wish PPG actually sponsored Propaganda for a while.

have you tried the virtual PPG anyone? I'm still stunned they didn't do a full waveterm emulation for it, but as far as i can tell the back end editting options have many of it's functions.

Did anyone ever make a PPG talk like the Korg Wavestation eventually managed?

Yeah, I like that bit a lot. Very good stuff he's got lurking on his site. Yours too, I might add. (I'm weird for scouting out the guys before they scouted on me.)

re: "didn't they have boys in your town?" by steve: No, all the twats in this town were either too obsessed with their haircut, or too obsessed with their ego, and while I dated a few, I found twu wuv out of town, and he's a bigger geek than I. (but not a music geek, I still sort of have him there)

Plus, most guys around this town were intimidated by a girl who wore stompy boots and liked making electronics *fzzt* and *pop*. You'd think I was crushing their manhood.

See, it's about having the right things in common and the right differences. Jem and I have different talents. Our delicious machinestress here and I would have a great old time in the pub chatting geek shit, but if forced to, say, cohabbit, there would eventually be violence I would think. I've woken the neighbours up, blasted highpressure coffee through every passageway in my head, spat my ciggie out, back blasted a bong and rebooted my windosw machione, all because of various things that howling nutter has said.

Never in my life have I laughed so hard at one person, not even Barney or Hooky (the BS/PH double act is funnier than Jem I admit, but only just)

She must smell really bad or something, it's the only pluasible explanation for her not having her own harem of fake-firemen and body builders and other mentally challenged men for her to...well... I don't even know what it is...it's just one of the "think down to some other program's level" options in the Holy Cubase.

Why did u wanna know, do u intende sending such a file?

You know you're dedicated to getting samples when you're on dialup.

Many thanks for that link, Gnu.

I remember a bank of samples that came with an old shareware midi program I had.. cicra 96/97, and there were four full length songs contributed by various musicians - I believe there was a track by OMD, know for sure there was one by Kurt Harland of Info Soc - all lost when I lost the cd, but love the treasures you can find on a lot of that old junkware that was handed out freely because people wanted to share their new hobby.

So I sit around and collect samples a lot, trying to refind the things I've lost due to time.

Mass compliments are different than your sweet telling you it . I hear it from him everyday, but it's.. rare? to be told en masse. So, I thank you guys for making me smile so much today. Hopefully, I return the favor tenfold.

That Oberheim Prommer? Chewed up whatever was put into it. We called him Meaty because he wouldn't/couldn't hold his samples for transfer, just mash them up like a meat grinder. We got him for 50$ at some resale shop, and were just initially going to use him for learning purposes... he learned us well. :D

I think he'd just been abused by his former owner.. I have a contact who smashes his gear up if they flake out live. I think he's a bit mental.

Funny I know piss outta my bass but am gentle with my machines....ANd have to have their long dead cold corpses trailed from my wailing arms when the end finally comes.

Glad to hear he tells you that BTW, we wouldn;t want the Angels having to add another name to the shitlist.

The cleverest/stoopidest things I ever did all revolve round a Boss Dr100 beat box.

We used to connect it's trigger out to the moog and play covers of EGG and Temptaion...it took me 15 years to find out that's exactly how NO had done those tracks originally, but with a DR55 and an ARP. My real triuph was turning it into an electronic drum kit....built pads for it using photograohic papaer and tinfoil. ran wire onto the contact pads for the keys. It worked a treat...but I can't solder very well...and I never ever finished it...it sat in it's lashed up form for months then fell apart. :(

every now and then I would power up the body, put a lead in it and drag metal over the back of the board.....amazing noises...but then one day it didn;t power up any more :(

That's MacGyver class stuff there. :)

I've been thinking about trying to build my own electric violin. I've had this thing for so long, and it's cheaply made anyways so I figure.. why not make use of it as a science project.

I've had luck with rebuilding radios and odd parts for older computers (my own solder skills aren't very pristine) but am a bit nervous tackling this sort of job without more extensive research.

Well, it's either make it electronic for playing normal, or think of a way to make it a trigger for samples that then play themselves out on a keyboard but, yeah, lots of reading will need to be done so I don't fry myself (again)

Working with the Prom and tinkering seemed so much easier a tackling.

Now I can't stop thinking the badge is going to need some grotesquely engorged pair of *coughs* with the letters 'S.N.S.S.' engraved on top. Red enamel to fill in the letters, black and chrome for the erm.. :evil4: .

Might look pretty wicked.

OK, let's get this straight... (I'm really gonna hate myself for this)

If you are eating, stop.

SNSS, happens to also BE, as you may be away, Slightly Narrow Sound System... the name under which me and Rich Hayes (along with all sorts of nutjobs) make awful noise. And owing to a really annoying thing best described as my sweat glands being alergic to themselves, I myself am more often then not, the proud owner of a scrotal area worthy of "buster Gonad and his unfeasably large testicles". Thankfully this is just colateral damge to the skin and no bollox are hurt in the making of this agony.Strangley the girl who took my cherry called my "buster" years before any such affliction....but let us not go there.

My friend Melissa and I were the rowdiest broads at school, and often were told such by (insert random schooler here), so we finally got a small, pocket sized giftbox for us each that we'd written "balls box" on, and any time someone questioned our nerve, we 'whipped out our balls' so to speak.

Random anecdote, that.

I dig your new pic, Mr. Campbell. It was really sweet of you to volunteer to appear in Bolton's living nativity scene this year.

You'll note Mary is absent owing to the difficult involved in finding a Bolton virgin.

Actually the worst thing about that pic is that Rich has a silly hat on and I don't.

I was actually staring at it trying to work out where everyone is....it was either early on and everyone was sitting around outside the tent (how bizzarre, they treated the tent like a dancefloor with all the usual "who goes first" politics)...but I do look ballbagged so more likely it;s just before dawn and everyone else is dancing on the beach or the rocks or half way up a small cliff.

Bangor looks very nice Steve, but i'd be more impressed if you had statistics with the pictures such as:

Number of pubs Number of off licenses Number of kebab shops/burger bars Number of patrolling police

:baby:

No...the correct reply was ... "OMG wahat a beautiful town, stick the kettle on and put a bottle of something nice in the fridge, I'll be on the 6 O'clock flight"

Pubs: more than churches, that's all we ever worked out for sure...everything from Moe's through hood bars to exquiste posh Joints filled with wankers who think they deserve to be there (we call them "fur coat no knickers" people).

Off licenses: in addition to the booze section of the chainstores (I love the English...NI store NEVER put booze in the same room as food), there are several including one fitted with a walk in refrigerated warehouse. Last closing is 11PM.

Nosh: 3 excellent Indians, 5 or 6 decent chineses (including one exeptional one I am addicted to toally...the guy has pork ribs with salt and chillie in the pan before I get to the counter). Couple of very good kebab houses, a Pzzeria that I think is average but all the yachty fuckers say is the best the get to eat out of anywhere, plus some other average ones. All the usual swill-in-polystyrene options are available. We also have a truly amazing chippy, let down only by the staff being vile little terrorist/chav offsping.

Police: at closing time there are usually 100 armed officers looking for trouble (all the late night bars ar within 100yrds of each other and kick out in sync, so it's not unreasonable). Most average nights there's a duty officer and a single patrol car. Smiling and not pointing guns at our cops will get you a long way...if they think you're into one side or other or you're gobby you're doomed (before anyone starts about cops being biased...they break heads in this town, and there's only orange heads to be broken...it is a god given right of the two communities in NI to gurn their fuckin lamps out about how the cops work only for the other side)

Downside...not everyone's as nice as me, we're a bit backward in many ways...and then there's fucktard season.

A new liver by the sound of it! If i was coming, i'd have a glass of stout to be polite, then start on red wine with malibu chasers then get on the brandy! Hmmmm, got a taste for it now. On my first Christmas do tomorrow so need to psyche myself up for that!!

I am capable of looking like a proper lady when i got out, and even quite glamorous for a Bolton bird. Then 4 hours later i look like i've been beaten by the ugly stick. Hair majorly out of place, make-up down the face, red wine down my top - nice!

Still want to come drinking with me on NOOLer day?

"let;s get married" "yeah" "no, actually sod that, let's get a kebab" "YEAH!!"

I see you left Bass free for me:) Are you sure you'll be safe near my sound desk jemma?

EDIT: and yes....the out-do syndrome is deadly....it happens with me and racael all the time and usually ends with me and her curled up in balls on the floor pissing ourselves and everyone else giving stern looks and making their excuses. Her Ex tried to sling me one night for eating her neil diamond CD..and was just like "it's "The Rachael"'s house, I will leave when asked by her." He looked like he was about to knock my fucking head in when from somewher nearby came this voice saying.... "you throw him out you cunt and you're goin out after him, but he'll get back in...and anyway Mr funny-cunt's gonna buy me a new CD" (it wasn't a threat either, she just knew that the CD had been destoryed for a laugh and would be replaced without question)

And I think I mentioned that Esther and I used to have a circle around us right at the front of gigs.....no one dared enter between the pogoing fuckwitt and the flying masses of Est's hair and flailing limbs, it simply wasn;t worth it.

Sadly, my mainest of main women at the minute, Leanne, is no use at all on that score. She's great for getting me to decry authority and lead work rebellions, just by sitting looking deeply proud and impressed when I rant. Since I been off tho I have found that she is both difficult to incite and makes very little effort to inspire me to naughtiness.

Not actually having a GF has some serious advantages you get to pick all the best bits from all the best chicks :D

Bless yer little cottons yer a princess. TBH, I already lucked in if you ask me :D

But today has not started well. Swelling have swollen (not my nuittsack in case you wonder....worse the entire area between balls and ass is swelling). This is making moving very sore, and pushing me into a game of painkiller bukaroo. Dunno if you ever played bukaroo, it's a child game where you pile stuff on a plstic donkey till it's spring trips ans flings everything off.....you can play a very simillar game with drunk passouts. Anyway...painkiller bukaroo is....can you get enough painkillers into you to actually be able to move around without yelling out loud....or will your guts call time out and eject everything first. I already had 2 pilss, and am still really sore AND my guts are defo communicating their displeasure.

I can actually FEEL it getting worse, feel blood vessels being stretched and burst and they fill with goo....I imagine it's rather like a cologen or botchelism injection...felling your flesh stretch to accomodate.

I'm in an evil mood too cos I'm so sore, each time I make a typo and have to correct I alomst yell out loud. I'm also totally knackered having only had 2.5 hours sleep cos I was so so.

GGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr

And I know you're thinking..."if I was there I'd So give you a hug".....no, no you wouldn't....I wouldn't let anybody get a noseful of what's seeping out of my skin right now.

sorry...just up and just skorry for myself and weepy

I likely wouldn't try to hug you only on the offchance you're like me when you're in annoying pain and you get beargrowly and ready to rumble anything that breathes on you.

Though, I *would* make you soup and generally cater to your every other non-touch need. I'm so domestic.

If there's one thing I'm great at, it's that nurse thing. :)

I'll pass a few feel better thoughts your way. Sooner or later the others will have to wake up and be around and they'll give you smiles and guffaws and keep that spirit up on you.

:evil4: It's their sworn duty.

Mr. Campbell, you and the missus ought to compare painkillers sometimes. A couple of morphine with coffee, then some hydrocodone throughout the day...we've a bigass opiate stash and I'm not allowed to touch it. Not as glamorous as it seems, though, is it? I get so pissed off (American style) when I read that Colin Fucking Ferrell, e.g., is being "treated" for an addiction to painkillers. The missus has to jump through hoops to get them just so she can get out of bed and walk around, and then call to get permission to take an extra one. That's why it's so important to me to become a Hollywood celebrity...so I can get giant bags o' pills.

Didn't think it'd be this long. Like i said i can;t get anything done until the specialist I've to see gets his new staff. And when I do see him I have this to look forward to... The only treatment apparently

ctually an acne treatment but they reckon it may work.

If that fails....they have to cut out all my pheremone producing sweat glands......yeaaaaah like I'm not unsexy enough as it is...now I wont even smell like a man. that means hige chunks out of my armpits and groin and god only knows how long immobilized in hospital. Some days i feel like a total fraud, billy the chav living on his incapacity benefit and living the good life (my definition of the good life being 2 warm computers, a bass and NOOL), on those days it FEELS like I've got no pain and all my mobility back...but it's only a relative thing really as people keep pointing out..like the company's doctor last week, the bloody thing was on extra good behaviour I thought, goinna make me look like a real skiver....doc takes a look at it and says..."and that's it dormant in your book is it?" and shook his head. Days like today....I'll probably sit at this machine all day save for peeing eating and checking for post....even getting out of the chair is REALLY unbearable, and walking sucks because of the particular specs of todays swelling. Still could be worse....could have spacehopper genitals like I had on the journey the apollo....actualy it worked out quite well....with the skin (and only the skin I might add.....my bits are cool) of me sack swollen til it was 1cm thick, it braced everything against me thighs and prevent unwanted and painful relative movements. Pogoing hurt a great deal tho as the various mounting were no design for the extra load of all that swelling.

Hope I didn't make you ill. But you guys have gotta know why I get cranky sometimes, especially with matchmakers...I really am no use to any of you ladies, sorry :(

I feel for yer missus, tho I think she may be worse off than I ...at least i get decent days. Wassup with her if I can ask?

I'm one down from morphine and I like it that way. Shortly after starting these ones i had a really REALLY vivid bout of night terrors that sent me wrong for about 3 days. I asked my Doc if it could have been withdrawls and he almost laughed...."errrrr not only you're alergic or something cos people do 3 times the dose for years and have no trouble" sure enough, it never phased me again. Morphine would worry me....even though it would be the only thing able to actually overcome what I'm feeling today.... a mate of mine had a tumour in the cavity behind his nose...and miraculously enough was cured, BUT it took him another 6 months to get off morphine, and he constantly offered the opinion during full treatment that cancer was considerable less debilitatiing than the treatment (then again, the whole not being dead thing is a bonus).

And Melly really is LUDICROUSLY beautiful isn't she. I'd no idea you built them like that over there.

Systemic lupus erythematosus...that's when your immune system takes off in your system like Pac Man and nibbles on healthy tissue: lungs, kidneys, joints, etc. Chronic pain, fatigue, swelling, spontaneous bruising, hair loss...it's a nonstop rollercoaster of delights, especially when Pac Man heads up the spine and nervous system; then it's like multiple sclerosis, the home game.

You should knock out a quickie SNSS record and use the proceeds to come over here to the Cleveland Clinic...the hospital preferred by 9 out of 10 Arab oil princes. It's funny driving through the ghetto and then seeing Prince Abdul and his manservant and 9 wives taking a stroll around the clinic.

ahhhh we just need to get errr evaluna's singer and what ya call that lot who entered the pseudo chamber music thing ...their singer Tracey somethin....we just need to get them in the Angels. msh can do all the pouty stuff...Jem does the talking, Bonzette, if properly drugged can handle the pissy corporate stuff.

I'm thinking of a dread zep style approach.... a themed tribute band. New order songs all rewritten to be flattering towards or semi pornographic about...poor bernard.

EDIT: how like steve to leave out the important bit. I've heard of Lupus...i believe the medical term is "fucking nasty". :(

Not so much a silk stocking over the lense as a thermal sock you mean?

In addition to a Columbo smilie, and a Chandler dance smillie, there also badly needs to be a "fire in the hole" or "running like bastard" one too.

...the great irony being that the missus was the vitamin-gulping Kashi-munching organic vegetarian who used to get up at 5 a.m. to put in 8 miles on the treadmill.

I sit in front of a computer eating artificially flavored styrofoam bits and I'm in perfect health.

I've never seen Desperate Housewives, but people tell us all the time that the missus looks exactly like Felicity Huffman, which I take it is a good thing. She'd definitely rate a few :love2: :love2: :love2: s on this thread.

We need at least one druggie for publicity purposes. I nominate Bonzette. And one of you is going to have to marry Liam Gallagher.

well, I've got ubuntu and fc4 sitting on ginger - the fc4 is used considerably more than the testpress of ubuntu.. I first set it up just as a mp3 server/firewall, then got the weird idea to just make a mini-network between fred and her on the offchance a buddy would want to come over and I'd need a spare working computer with functionality.

I am mostly a gaming girl so my win2kpro box gets a lot of abuse, but when I'm just farting around online I wheel over to ginger and post from there.

ginger's just a souped up p3 600 with 320+MB stolen from a bunch of delapidated boxes I knick from garage sales and 20/15 gig drives that are just storage for mp3's (and I'm not so anal on the mp3's I keep there, most just gets encoded at 192, unless it's stuff I really like to hear all the nuances on... and then whatever goes) If I had a better tower, she'd have more drives, but I'm operating on the best chip versus the best space, currently

fred's a 1.2 duron tower with a half gig of memory and a perpetually cleaned hard drive that hasn't needed to be over 40g since I first built him. He's stood the test of time well, and gets a new vid card or a nice twin optical disk addition whenever there's a decent sale (I'm so glad to have my dvd-+r combo drive.)

I'm in the market for decent KVM switches, always.

I don't really code all that much anymore. I was a bigger nerd in secondary school than now, possibly because I've gotten lazier and just in general want to write short essays as opposed to sorting out print_functions all night.

bought my PC in 2000...had avoided the hateful things until then. But while fixing them for mates had found that some of the games were good (notably GP legends aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Had Mandrake on it inside 3 months. and had Linux in the house since. It started with me on Mandrake. my bro resisted despite him BEING a code monkey and into all the insides of computers (I'm not, I just like computers that work, funny that). Then he tried it. The he vonerted ME to LFS...and then I converted him back to Gentoo....which is basically LFS with a kick ass package managed. Hal does everything athlon1800xp 700 odd mb of ram, and 60 gb o drive and an nvidia geforce 4 Sal plays games and runs cubase....athlong 2800_, 1GB matched DDR400...200GB dive and an ati7800 pro (nasty cards)...the two machines have simillar performance not surprisingly. Guzunda (cos she guzunda the table) is a bits....same story as your server...put all the old bits in a box and shake.....Guz runs web, mail, news and all sorts of servers as well as holding 300 and something gig of mp3s Donnard is my bros's box it's silver

So....apps.... windowmaker opera (ok and firefox and konqueror) emelfm k3b azureus gimp Eterm Evolution Pan pyslsk xmms and beep media player mplayer (never gmplayer..always mental for me that) and xine knewsticker

what are your killer linux apps then....i love that no two people ever use the same things, same as windows, but unlike windows there;a a chance if I try your faves and you try mine...they'll work :)

I'm stuck on mozilla's FF and TB xmms & beep (i love beep  ) gaim for all messaging needs audacity blender for occaisonal modding needs emacs for most nonsensical things flinch

and I really don't use much else. It's just this barebones little thing. I tweaked the setup at first install and just don't pay attention to updating it other than necessary pkgs like the newer mentions of above.

i think the best program i use is that audacity thing. it's the best find, ever.

OK....we're just getting to know each other, but there's something you should know.....I use vi we still speakin?

emacs...i tried I really tried...the thought of a text editor that thinks it s fucking OS is just too brilliant to ignore, but sadly I just couldn't be friends with it, I could use it(just) but never mates. not exactly friends with vi either, for proper typing i'd still pull up openoffice ot at least kedit....in a term I WOULD use nano, but forced myself away from it because it's not always available....whereas vi and emacs usually are.

been doing lots of dvd ripping and authoring in linux (and recently trashed most of the scripts by changing program versions (transcode and the like).) Linux is SO much easier for that stuff once you read a few bits (in my lazy case I read the command someone else used in an example and replaced stuff with $1 (yes, you;re talking to a 34 yrold script kiddie)). The trick, as with all things linux, is pipes, I love them. You can throw any file that mplayer can play, into mplayer and send it's output to transcode and get whatever the fook you want out the other end. I adore pipes and all that carry on....the way it's like fooking mecahno (mechano exists over there right?) lie a studio..plug x into y and send the result to z...what could be easier. I also enjoy the idea that stuff piped to /dev/null falls out the serial port and needs sweeping up from time to time :)

U ever visit Comp.os.linux.advocacy ?

WOW makes this place look like an old dears home at 3pm...a big overwarm room full of zzzzzz ing vegetables. it's not an online asylum it's an online gladiator show.

audacity is good BTW....although when you have wavelab 5 a kvm click away,,,, you don;t use it much.

seen this? you may need some tissues

I'm sane, I don't toe any linux party lines, and certainly won't hate you for liking vi (cos really, whatever gets the job done in the end. :P )

I'm horning over the baudline site again, back in a while.

If/when I have proper equipment, I likely won't be hovering in odd positions to record my own material over a shoddy mic and ghettoed pseudo-mixer set up  it's positively pathetic seeing me doing my 'thang' over here late at night.

Sound dude came up to me one night at a gig and looked at my it..pointed at my Casio CZ (no keys, no screen and a few nasty mods done to make up for it (nothing cool tho, more life saving) and said "ahhhh I take it that's for doing a keith emerson later then" I looked VEry hurt and he wandered away scrathing his head.

After the gig he came up to me, apologised and shook my hand, he also enquired as to the availability and price of used CZ series machines :)

Look, it's the CZ before its crippling disfigurement:

I like to visit Rogue Music (online at least) to check up on prices...and to see what's "Vintage Gear" these days and what's just "Old, Used Crap."

My buddy picked up a Roland SH-101 for $50 bucks at the hometown music shop ('cause it "didn't work"; um, did you guys ever think of plugging in the right AC adapter?).

Linux? My dad gave me his old W*****s 95 box which is to become a lean, mean Linux machine someday.

 inconsolable

I binned the chasis and front panel when i moved house in august :( Kept the mod and pitch wheels as a keepsake and to hopefully give them at least the burial I promised the synth......viking sylee into the Irish sea.

Wonderful machines.....every dance band is obsessed with them, but only the ickle cz101....the 3000 was like 16 or 32 of them. Apprently (source good, SOS, but I refuse to believe) the CZ series was the first multitimbral digital instrument after the fairlight (remember none of the DX's were, not even the utterly bonkers DX1...........

more polyphony than keys if memory serves (no muti mode neither)...cost fuckin daft money too....i think they built about 15 of them :D

my mogue rogue? £37, haggled him down the 2 bills as well. To this day i think someone (not me) had messed the price tags up cos there was an evil looking early 1980's yamaha clavinova besides it, that I would have said was barely worth crossbow practice...with £320 sitting on it

Linux....I can't afford a mac, and even if i could they suck balls for games and until recently their OS has been as trnsparent as coal, once you get past theb happy smilie exterior, it's like a Dr who plot FFS. And windows is THE WORST OS I ever set finger on ..Jesus it stinks.

My windows box and I now have an arrangement....don't stop running any apps overnight, and i keep my hands out of tour registry fucko. That, and rigorous backups and cleanups, keep us ina a tolerant working relationship :D

My linux box just sits there doing everything including NOOL :)....it get's rebooted only on one of 5 occasions.

  1. a kernel upgrade
  2. another machine on the network (read as a WINDOWS machine) shuts off it's shares for no reason, hangs my /mnt dir and I can't be arsed fixing it properly so I reboot. 3.Hardware upgrade (well duh) 4.horrid video car burps and locks (once in a VERy blue moon and only with system overclocked to "psychotic" FSB speeds.)
  3. power cut

This time I DID set the coffee down before reading.

you EVER come within 6 feet of my bass and I'll use it on you ! :D

c'mon Melly you aren't telling me you never strategically loaded a doobie to cause maximum seed-pyrotechnices or (in the case of hash) what I like to call Abdominal Arclight (in the B52 sense).

the most devastation I ever seen was caused by an ill concevied chilum we made out of a small lenght of brush-shaft (we usually used a carrot, the reason for which will become apparent as [hase II of the tale comes around). Anyway, the first thing to happen was that after mixing a modicum of baccy and a great deal (bout 20 bloody quid's worth, a night's smoking for all of us usually) of the finest slate hash into a beautyful homogenised powder (which takes fuckin ages).....we filled our little pipe with about hafthe mixture and passed it to $DUDE for the first smoke....with the words "go easy lad until you know what it's like". $DUDE promptly takes a tug on the thing that, frankly I would not have attempted even if it hadn;t been lit, and that looked suicidal from the outset. Sure enough about 1.5 seconds into this mamouth toke, all systems went into reverse. With one almighty bodypopping choke he blasted the entire contents of his lungs right back through the thing in a period too short to measure. krakatoa had NOTHING on this....bits hit the ceiling, the curtains..alll of us...the floor....everything was covered in tiny firebrands that took some SERIOUS stamping out.

So after we'd put ourselves and the house out and spent quite some time mourning the loss, and caling $DUDE names, we deciced to try again with the remaining mixture. This time we all took heed and there were no adventure. Except..... As I mentioned normally a modified carrot is used because chilum mix as we made it was one step down from thermite, and the dense wet tissue of the carrot was the PERFECT material to burn it in. A brush shaft however is not. After the pipe had been round a few times we started to think we'd done all right in losing the first one.....after it had been round a few times more we started to wonder what was going on.

At that point we found we'd been smoking the pipe itself for quite some considerable time, it having combusted quite readily in the presense of 1000oC smoking mixture.

Henceforth that night was known by all present simply as "the night we smoked the chilum"

Dope doesn't do you any harm....it's being a fucktard cos you're hammered that causes the problems :D
