best start of a record

just playing stranglers. track - walk on by. the start is amazing,the guitar,then deep bass. peaches bass start is also great and as an 15 yr old lad in 1977,it was the first track i heard on my first ever tuning into the john peel show and it and JP then set out my musical path there after so whats your the best start/intro to a record ?

I always thought the start to "Lazy Line Painter Jane" by Belle and Sebastian was just about perfect (don't know if you mean "records" as in albums or singles)

The Who's "I am the Sea/The real me" opening track off of Quadrophenia. ocean noises, far off Voices and entwistle's crazy bass lines carrying the tune

Depeche Mode's Black Celebration has an excellent beginning, with that sequencer line that leads into the rest of the song. And it ends with that keyboard line of But Not Tonight. All around, it's a perfect album.

I would like to also nominate the proper 12 dance mix of A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Centre Of The Ultraworld by The Orb. the one that just starts with a huge digeridoo-esque bass pedal and minnie ripperton.

Speaking of The Orb, the best (non NO) intro to a gig has to be the Orb at Bristol Sound City 95.....they came on to "happy happy joy joy".....pushing the level ever higher until it really hurts....then the moment the tune stopped, Alex dropped the BIGGEST bass rumble I've ever heard, and offiialy confirmation that The Orb were in da house.

TPK is worth a mention too, all the percussion usually has me shimmying before a bass drum gets near.

Oh and P-Machinery and Dr mabuse by Propaganda both begin FABULOUSLY.

And one other....Flying Teapot by Gong.....man all that gliss hillage is just devine.

Too early to think but the beginning of Adore by The Pumpkins is ok.

I wanna be adored by The Stone Roses, still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. A worthy runner up would be water from a vine leaf by William Orbit.
