Most nonsense or annoying thing in Films/TV

What is, in the opinion of the here-gathered wise ones, the single most annoyingly false thing you see on TV shows.

Although I am primarily NOT thinking of sci fi, I would like to offer the following......

in any show involving teleportation, inevitably there will at some point be a story involving contamination of the signal with other lifeforms (essentially a riff on "the fly"), in Star Trek as an example they make big song and dance numbers out of bio filters and saying things like "there are two lifeforms in the pattern buffer". well see the thing is, that a single human being is a veritable colony of other beasites...all sorts of bacteria and microbes that are essential to our wellbeing (and in some cases survival)....yet tese are always ignored in such sequences....I mean essentially....if we take "the fly" as an example....the first experiment conducted should have resulted in, half man half stomach microbe, should it not.

NOTE:if any trekkers want to argu, I will gladly bring up the trilithium torpedo sequence in Generations which had me AGHAST at it's silliness. Star wars fans...just ssshhhhh ok?

OK to bring things MUCH closer to reality, and serve to hopefully inspire those of a non sci-fi mindset......

Why is it that anywhere else on earth's surface, the speed of sound is 330M/s, but in Hollywood (and other lesser places of course) it travels at the speed of light?

Even on the NEWS, they DUB explosion effects over the visible explosion. In the real world, if lightning strikes or something blows up 1 mile away, you see the light and roughly speaking, hear the sound 5 seconds later....but on TV, nope...instantaneous.

Whereas my first example is obviously just me being an anal retentive geek fuckwitt....this second thing, is actually a worry....it affects the perception of reality that many people have, because it sinks in over time.

oh while we're at it....something that REALLY annoys me..... a "surprised" resident opening the door for the presenter of a show.....shot from the inside GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

American movies: women they go to bed with their make up on and when they wake up in the morning it's still there and then they kiss the person next to them without brushing their teeth first. That's just disgusting :nono:

They are just trying to get the man to clean the pubes off their teeth. Otherwise they get in the bristles of the toothbrush.

loads of people say that to me :D

but the fact is it's not as a result of to much free time, I'm just a born nitpicker, and it happens at LIGHTNING speed (as opposed to sound delayed speed).

The ery fact that you thik I may be sad cos of noticing these things 9apart from the sci fi one obviously, that IS sad :D ), sort of lends weight to my argument that it warps minds.....it's never struck you as odd, that the reality you see around you and TV do not tally.

Maya, damn right..Hollywood hair...bed resistant....fooking apocalypse proof more often than not :D

Reminds me of something else I hate on TV.....ads for silly women's chemicals....hair products that make your hair 73.12% more beautiful, or skin products full of bogusomide9000, the essential skin conditioner that's only existed since last weeks marketing meeting. I hate them even more if they feature Sarah J(esus fucking christ did i miss a meeting where good looking got redefined) Parker or that fucking horrorific Andie McDull woman.

nobody ever needs to shave, get a haircut, or look after the bodily functions, even when lost on a desert island.

Now you see why I never watch television or films.

Well, i'll watch films, i'll just not pay for them, yes? :nono:

Yeah....I imagine if I had gone to see Tom Crusie's disgusting abuse of War of the Worlds instead of stealing it off the net....I'd have gone utterly fucking ballistic...in fact I very much doubt I'd have seen the whole thing before being removed for my agonized screams and tourette's like commentary. i'll spare this fine forum the rant this time :D

you're here too. all about attitude. average person could be an international tennis star if 1/2 the time spent checking in here were spent on a court. at least nobody is in court or on trial. works.

most nonsense or annoying - that the majority of it all seems to be hugely successful suburbia where everybody is rich and complaining. and people are supposed to care.

actually one that ALWAYS gets me.....

SMALL PLANET SYNDROME

in ANY sci fi show (almost)....whereever the heroes find themselves, whatever minute village...it's always te exact hub of all things on that world.

one of the most ludicrous examples comes from possibly the best story from the best series......That being, of course, Genesis of the Daleks.

It features two global super powers who after centuries of warfare are rapidly regressing in terms of technology. Fine....but they have each been beaten back to a single protective dome....and te two domes are within a couple of hours walk of each other....LOL..... it's like Washington and Mocsow were 20 miles apart.

Star trek's a terrible offender there two, especially in episodes featuring primitive non-global societies.

that more of the classic black & white shows and films aren't being shown often enough.

shown much anytime, except in the middle of the night.

the protagonist can find himself in the most boring little shithole, and something intersting happens. a gun fight, a punch up, and or a memeber of the opposite sex who is a chance encounter falls madly in love with him.

trust me nothing exciting ever happens in boring little shitholes.

For me, it has to be entire shows/channels devoted to continual quizzes, where you have to phone in @ £1 a minute with the answer, to find you are always wrong, until the number of phone calls received by the channel is obviously enough to allow them to have a winner.

Normally the so called 'quiz' is basically f_____ impossible with zillions of possible answers, enabling the channel to draw it on for eons letting the incoming phone calls ring in the cash.

For me I have two issues, one tv the other movie:

  1. When ever people go on the talk shows like jerry springer, oprah, etc. and they get all "suprised" that some horrible truth is exposed. I know if my wife ever asked me on one of these shows, I would get it over with by divorcing her, not making an idiot out of myself on national tv. What good has ever come out of these show, really???

  2. The guys that are portrayed in chick flicks. They are always tough, daring, and horribly handsome. . .but he has this soft side that even makes Richard Simmons look gay. Then my wife will look over at me and start asking me that dreaded question, "why can't you be more like him??" Oh, and these guys are so well tempered,no matter what BS the chick throws his way. Not to also mention every chick movie the relationship almost dismally breaks apart because of some misconception, which gets resolved in the end. ARRRGGGG!!!!!

  3. Lately all these movies have this equality in them that gets to be ficticious. Look I'm all for equality, but when a 5 foot 98 lb girl can kick the ass of a 6 foot 250 lb all muscle guy, well that's just silly. Maybe it could be done, but the chicks always leave with only one good scratch, usually above the right cheek. I think not.

Thanks for letting me vent on these, they were pushed down in that deep dark place.

How does Darth Vader..."go", you know?

I mean, you never see a toilet on the Death Star, yet you know it has to be there (hell, they have a trash compactor. I suppose that had to be in a pivotal scene, but Chewbacca on the can would be too much, eh?)

Also, guys on TV shows always have a hot best friend of the opposite sex who carries a secret crush on them throughout most of the show's run, then hooks up only after dating every single woman in New York and realizing that "she was the one all along". I've had some very attractive female friends in the past, but rarely (i.e., never) have any of them confessed to having a crush on me at any point in our friendship. What's up with that?

Hollywood hardly shows common people's life. You never see regular one-store suburban houses with small kitchens.

You always have huge houses, even when outside they seem small. Protagonists (unless it's a teen charactor) are either doctors or lawyers or policemen, unless a story is really about a university professor or K-mart maniac.

Death Star toiletries. hooking up with missed scenes from Battlestar G. while everybody was off to the holo-deck.. class. the camera couldn't catch everything.

Has anyone noticed that all the American sitcoms are having guys that are complete bumbling idiots, where their girlfriend/wife is always right, smarter. The guy fights that he is right and always looks like some moron doing it. And if the show doesn't start off like that it eventually turns into that. What is with that????

True. There are also no rowhouses on TV, either.

Why are most other species in the universe bipeds that are amazingly similar to, well, us?

And why is there absolutely no problem with mating, and sometimes reproducing, between species that originated in other solar systems?

And why is English not only the common language on Earth, but throughout the universe?

And why does space travel take so little time. Consider that the fastest speed possible is light speed. So if the distance between two planets is 371 light years, why doesn't it take 371 years (assuming that the ship can even reach the speed of light) to actually travel that distance? Usually, it only takes long enough for trouble to brew aboardship...

And why, why, why did Spock have to be a hippie in that one Trek episode?

Answers:

  1. cause tripods are only for cameras, quadrapeds are, well, boarish.

  2. Simply because storks are out in space as well. we can only dream of how many half-breed bastards kirk has running around the universe.

  3. There are only two languages: English, and non-english. . .it only makes sense to speak the one that makes sense. . .makes sense?

  4. Ok, no explination to help, but how is it people can be walking and standing around or sitting comfotably in leather-office chairs while jumping into lightspeed??? People pass out at the speed of sound, guess we're ammune to light speed?

  5. It was only a matter of time. Always thought spock had something on the side with Bones (ever notice how they bicker like married folk??). Gayness leads to the hippie-side.

Comrade, anytime these things seem too perfect, just watch Star Wars and watch the storm trooper that walks into the doorjam a couple times. Always brings a smile to my face.

Hugh Grant and Hugh Grant-type films that depict a land nothing like England, see bullshit films such as Bridget Jones' Diary and Love Actually.

Errrr pontiac...while you're only joking...I should point out....that right now you are travelling at MANY times the speed fo sound, and are not throwing up. It's accceleration, not velocity that we can't handle.

Steve, not to be nit-picky, but that's why I said "jumping into lightspeed". I meant the acceleration to lightspeed. I got your point though.

;) Actually....that's something where trek physics surprised me by being right..... They have this made up thing called an inertial damper that prevents them becoming puree when they ship manouvers.....however, you will often see the crew sway, supposedly to SHOW inertia. this was explained as being the crew responding to a load of many 10's of 1000's of G, but for an indescribably short time.

I thought this was abject cack...until I discovered that race car drivers routinely experience 200G for brief periods during crashes...some 20 times what the human body is capable of handling normally.
