Even though I don't have Irish blood, my family and I eat corned beef, potatoes, carrots and cabbage for the holiday. I don't know what else I'm going to do.
What are you going to do on St. Patrick's Day?

Actually, corned beef is the Irish-American tradition. My parents are from Ireland and they would have ham and cabbage. I’m a vegetarian, so I’ll just observe the drinking part of the holiday.

Probably NOT going to Kell's in Portland, it's likely to be full of slobs with no Irish blood whatsoever in them, and they'll all be wearing green and "Kiss Me I'm Irish" buttons or tee shirts. Not that I've Irish blood in me, just where in the hell are these people the rest of the year?
Same thing as every st paddy's day: Corned beef and cabbage While watching The Quiet Man on dvd.
Only a quarter irish, but it's in me blood.

Good idea on the guiness, though I usually drink Bass, and I'll be sure to punch my 8 yearold son square between the eyes over pokemon cards. j/k

I'm 12.5% Irish.
I'll probably have a beer on Friday.
(Those two statements are not in any way connected, by the way)
St Patricks day??? what the fuck is with peoples obsession with Ireland? i have some irish blood in me, but i will be doing nothing, the same as i do for St Andrews day. St George or St David. Top o the mornin tae ya.
I have no idea what all the paddyphilia is about either...as I have often mentioned....when in the staes we had people with names like Maya's trying to tell us they were Irish...and black geezers telling us their granny was from Donegal.
Leave it out guys...we're an island of petty religious terrorists, bigots and alcoholics, it's not big and clever to be from ireland...unless you're IN Ireland and can at least enjoy the sheer wonder of the landscape.
Paddy's day here is a pain, cos both sides think Paddy was theirs (despite him being here 1000 years before there was such a think as a prod)....what tends to happen then is that there's a big parade in Belast, which a good 50% of protestant carers (meaning those who, unlike me, give a fuck) will whine about and wax lyrical (or as close to lyrical as a strategically shaved ape can get) on "fenians getting their own way" (all bollox of course, it's not like there are IRA recruitmet floats going down Royal Avenue ;) ). There are all sorts of non-paddy events on the day too...the schools cup final for instance, and usually some horse racing down at downroyal or the currah.
Nothing.
Will be a busy day at work though - we have 14 weddings. Let's hope some of them don't turn up drunk. ![]()
Irish Blood in our family.
Not that we need an excuse to celebrate. Will be meeting up with several of my family and most of the missus' family up the local Irish Centre for some shandy and shennanigans.
Thank Crunchie it's a Friday - I finish work at 1! :D
Yeah I don't know what to do on St paddy day, just like Ramadam,Diwali,Australia day.
And then I remember im not a plastic wannabe.
If your Irish, fair enough otherwise celebrate your own culture.
April 23rd St Georges day![]()
Eating birthday cake (alone in the kitchen corner with mascara dripping and Eurythmics soundtrack).
Sounds like a dull Friday night for you conforming nonconformists. But avoiding college aged drunken Americans is a must on this day.
BTW for you Catholics out there. Our bishop said it was ok to eat meat on this Friday since it is the Feast of St Patrick. However, if St Pat's day fell on Good Friday meat would still be verboten.
Rememebr, this holiday is not about drinking beer and watching the river turn green.
Twist<--too much Irish in him
Is it actually a tradition to have an "Irish" dinner in Irish-American houses on SPD? Thats pretty funny.
I'll be working away all day and then off to a party -which will probably be shit (most Irish parties are- but thats probably an international thing).
I really dislike "Paddys" day. I used to like it as a very small kid - parades and all that jazz. These days, Dublin gets wrecked and the worst excesses of bar-stool-republicanism gets an outing. The country turns into some sort of dodgy tourist board advert, while the entire government go to America to meet some top-rate mass murderers and talk about ending violence in Ireland. Thank christ Clinton is gone though, all those fucking sax solos we used to get on the news on patricks night.
Theres talk of a riot in Dublin this year, a kind of follow up to the "disturbances" of 3 weeks ago. Heres hoping! - at least it would make the day interesting.
Otherwise, Paddys day is a sham. Irish-Americans projecting a perverted view of the homeplace on us, and us projecting some equally disturbed national sense on the world, while a whole lot of projectile vomiting goes on outside the dankest and most famous bars in the world.

well... nothing more. I do not want to hurt Irish people, but...
If you take a walk in a French town, you may notice that most of the groceries that are opened late at night are owned by Arabs. Take away are owned by Vietnames or Chinese people... Pubs are owned by Irish.
So, if you say "je vais chez l'arabe", that means that you are to go to a grocery after 9PM. If you say "je vais chez le Chinois" you will bring back nems, chop suey whatever you like and so on. "Je vais chez le Turc / le Grec", means that you are going to have a kebab...
"Je vais chez l'Irlandais" could mean, I gonna drink like a fool and St.Patrick's day is a better day because you HAVE to BE drunk more than the average because it is "cool" to be drunk like an Irishman... No stew, nothing but crap Guinness (compared to the one you can drink in Ireland) - mind a pint of Guinness costs at least 6€ here, so the beer always tastes "out of date" when you are enough crazy to waste 6€ for a single pint !...
I will think of all of you Irish people, hoping you will be fine and happy...

Jeez, for someone which such a brilliant record at stating fact, i'm surprised you've gone on record and said that the entire government is off on its jollies to the US. This is basic stuff conor, as if you'd did your research you'd find that twenty nine members of the Irish Government are off to twenty two different countries. Two senior members of the administration will be staying at home for the week.
i have now decided to have a reasonably quiet one. i plan to drive to sydney on saturday and hit some record shops. i haven't been out of canberra in ages.
Yes, government ministers go all over the place, but the most senior go to Washington, and get all the exposure
Nice one Liam. As usual, instead of dealing with the thrust of any argument (it was more of a bullshit aside) you substitute something ANYTHING else (in this case, pedantry). Reason: you're not qualified to comment on or refute anything with a coherant and articulate position. You dont even try anymore. Go on back now, and write it up on your little blog (which I must check out someday when I'm feeling really down-its sure to be full of bellylaughs).
I can see myself getting sucked in here, so I wont. I'll just fuck off for a while more.
Go on now kids, back each other up!
and so on. Reactionary simplteons of the world, Unite on NOOL, you have nothing to loose but your self importance!
reactionary simpleton here.
i believe that is the first time i've been called that and yes i am full of self importance. whereas mr C is the fountain of socialst "truth". how about looking past your own propaganda organs one of these days.

EDIT: And whats your obsession with my blog? Thats about the fifth time you've made reference to it, yet you say havent even read it? Hmmmm, would this mean that your presuming whats mentioned in it? Surely not?!?!
Managed to get a couple of freebies for the Ordinary Boys gig on St Patricks night, happy days ![]()
you into them snoop? I saw them at the limelight ages ago.
First album is brilliant. second album is shite.
Have always liked the singles they've released. I haven't got the 1st album but Radio 1 chucked me in a copy of Brassbound as part of a competition I won, don't mind it to be honest. The gig is at the Mandela Hall so i'll probably just end up getting pissed upstairs if its open.

Glad Burt questioned this. I found out in this morning's paper that corned beef and cabbage is not Irish, but an American idea. The Irish prefer ham or bacon.
Just finished work, off to play a bit of five-a-side-football, might have a few pints of Guinness to celebrate my (albeit very small amount of) Irish heritage, home, dinner, settle down with the hi-fi on, few more beers, fall asleep in the chair... I love Fridays... ![]()

Thought they liked Beef Or Salmon.
And why would anyone pretend to be Irish as an excuse to go for a drink? ![]()
